Notes/Commercial Description:
Oude Gueuze Tilquin à l’Ancienne (6.0% alc/vol) is a spontaneous fermentation beer, produced from the blending of 1, 2 and 3 years old lambics. It is unfiltered and unpasteurized, and refermented in the bottle for at least 6 months. The lambics used were fermented and oak aged in our installations. These lambics are coming from worts brewed by Boon, Lindemans, Girardin and Cantillon breweries.

A - hazy, golden orange. Light carbonation. Pours just about a finger of head with little retention.

S - some lactic sourness/vinegar. Good bit of barnyard funk. Vinous notes as well.

T - pretty subdued sourness. I was expecting quite a bit more of a tart bit so I'm a little let down. Good amount of Bretty funk. There's an off astringent quality to the beer that is not wholly pleasant. Not particularly bad but there's a lot better out there in this category.

M - nice carbonation. Light to medium bodied.

O - this wasn't nearly as sour as I expected or hoped for. For someone interested in gueze's but not looking for anything too puckering, this is a nice option. Ended up finishing this off with some smoked Gouda and that paired nicely.

375ml C&C bottle open with a moderate pop as the cork is removed from the bottle. Poured into tulip glass.

best before date: 03/26/2022.

Appearance: straw yellow / pale orange bodied beer. A bit more than a full finger of bone white head that drops down to a thin cap.

Smell: wet hay, musty basement funk, lemons, green apple skin, and white grapes.

Taste: mild tartness not really sour. This beer is lemony and almost a bit more funk forward than anything. Wet hay and straw notes. Grainy malt flavor. Grassy bitterness and slightly earthy. Pears and white grapes. Oak in the finish is mixing with more musty funk and a hint of tart lemon juice.

Mouthfeel: light bodied beer with low carbonation levels. Soft and mellow carbonation. Really drinkable. I could use a bit more carbonation in this gueuze.

Overall: Solid beer thats a nice offering, but it didnt blow me away. Good entry level gueuze, but I recommend that you just pay the extra money and get something with more complexity for a beer from the Gueuze beer style. Examples like Drie Fountienen Oude Gueuze or Golden Blend.

375ml bottle from 2011/2012 vintage, poured into a Cantillon taster glass today, 7/17/2013.

Aroma: Vinegar and some tangerines and lemon zest. Possibly some sweet green apples. Slight funk, but more acidic than funky.

Colour: Slightly hazy golden body with a somewhat effervescent 2.5cm white head that dissipates fairly quickly into a bubbly collar. Not much lacing to speak of. Looks like a solid geuze, nothing super special.

Flavour: More tart and acidic than actual sourness. Mostly some vinegar, lemon zest, a little bit of oak, with some dry sweetness reminding me of green apples. Not superbly sour but definitely acidic.

Mouthfeel: Lighter body with great carbonation. Aftertaste is mostly lemon and apple tartness with a trail of mild funk. Not super sour or particularly dry. Refreshing and easy to drink.

Overall: Like a good champagne. Not particularly funky or sour, but comes with a nice refreshing carbonation and good acidity. It's good on a hot day. I prefer 3F or Cantillon's regular geuzes, but this is a lot more easily obtainable where I am. So I recommend trying this at least once, if it hits your spot, great. If not, well keep on looking for that delicious and easily+reasonably obtainable geuze.. if there is a such thing.
