"Black India Pale Lager" brewed for GABS festival in Melbourne, May 2014. Tried there on tap.

Pours a very dark brown colour, slight cloud through it, with large bubbly beige head. Nice lacing.

Smells fruity. Notes of mandarin, pear, passionfruit and lemon mostly, touch of bitterness but not much else. Bit subtle; could use more malt character for balance.

Taste is sweet. Caramel and toffee dominate the front palate before descending into a touch of fruity hop late-mid which still retains a domineering sweetness. Pear and orange are the characters and it's crying out for a more citric edge. Not really hoppy enough, not really dark enough, just tastes light and tangy.

Body is fine, touch of carbonation provides some welcome cut-through.

Not a bad lager, but not quite hoppy enough for the "India" appelation or black enough for the "black" appelation.
