A special blend of 50% wheat malt and 50% barley gives this unique unfiltered ale a distinctive hazy, golden colour and a fresh tangy character. The choice is clear. The beer isn't.

wheat? Looks, like wheat. Popular here. Citrus taste didn't work for me,sour and acidic maybe if very fresh-like same week made. Not smooth, could not finish much of it. Medium mouthfeel. on-tap at Hop In with Presario. Fizzy, watery, not good example of style.
Had on tap 1.5 years later at the brewery and it was better in terms of creaminess and drinkability.

341ml bottle poured into tulip. Been drinking this stuff for years, kind of surprised to see I haven't reviewed it yet.

Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with two fingers of off-white head that leaves honeycomb lace as it recedes.

Smells of crackery wheat malt, soft citrus and apple, dusted black pepper and some cut grass.

Tastes of unsalted cracker, faint apple skin and orange pith, a bit of peppery yeast and more soft grassy hops.

Feels light and fizzy. Light bodied with frothy carbonation. Finishes smooth.

Verdict: Recommended. Not exactly Earth-shaking, but tasty and easy to knock down.

Velvet Fog is one of the oldest craft beers in Alberta. Everyone who is into beer has sampled this at one point or another, and in my opinion it still holds up pretty well to this day.

Officially branded as a wheat ale, it is actually a 50/50 blend of wheat and barley malt. This is probably to the beer's benefit, as I think a straight up wheat ale would have been a bit much for the young craft beer scene in Alberta of the late 90s. Pours a nice cloudy yellow, but not much aroma to it. Taste is mild and smooth on the tongue, but it tastes very clean and a bit more exciting than conventional lager.

Truthfully a bit boring nowadays, but a solid and pleasant beverage nonetheless. I'd grab a pint if this was one of the few craft options on tap.
