Black as its namesake, with a creamy tan head, this Oatmeal Stout is velvety smooth with low carbonation. Six different malts, hops from the U.K. and (of course) oatmeal contribute to this ale's complex character.

Nice to see this one take a trek away from the Wild Rose Taproom to wind up at Beer Revolution. A dark brownish black brew with red highlights and some brown foam, the initial aroma is a nice smoky hit, all roasted coffee beans and baker's cacao. Palate is not sweet at all, this one is deep and dark, roasted and earthy with just a faint hint of a sour tang that reveals itself over time. I get considerable burnt "ashtray" character, treacle, a mild nuttiness like walnut shells, little to no dark fruit notes. Smooth creamy mouthfeel as per the style with a semi-thick body. Some hop resins do make their presence known and the finish is classic English earthy hops, like Fuggles or Challenger. What's particularly cool is the sour apple note that emerges fairly late into a pint and then simply won't leave the tongue. There we go, there had to be some fruit in this somewhere. I really enjoyed this brew, so dark and bitter but leaves on a fruity note so as to avoid any accusations of being "one-dimentional". Less sweet than other stouts but that's not a fault in my book.

Appearance - Pours a dark jet black with a half finger width of creamy mocha head.

Smell - Roasted barley and malts, coffee bean, cocoa, oatmeal.

Taste - Strong roasted flavours from the barley/malts and coffee, then transitioning to the cocoa/dark chocolate and oatmeal flavours. Very rich.

Mouthfeel - Medium/full bodied with light carbonation. Very creamy texture.

Overall - A star of a stout by Wild Rose. It's unfortunate that this brew is only available at the Taproom, because I'd love to pick up a few bottles for the cold winter months. A solid example of the style.

Beer is black. A moderate tan head on top. Good retention, excellent lacing.

Smell is primarily roasted malt, somewhat smoky. Some vanilla there too.

Tastewise, the beer is mildly bitter, with roasted malt prominent. Coffee and some dark chocolate up front. Vanilla. A touch of smoke and a hint of dark fruit, very slight.

Full bodied, low to moderate carbonation. A bit astringent.

Overall, quite good.

In a Wildrose shaker at the brewery during Oktoberfest 2011.

Visual (4.5): Black as it's namesake with a chestnut brown single finger head that lasts for a decent time. Lacing is present on the glass in a very consistent fashion. Too dark for visible carbonation; extremely opaque.

Aroma (3.5): Light malts in the smell. Biscuit and cookie. Kind of weak for the powerful color.

Taste (4.5): Amazing initial cookie (oatmeal?) malt flavour with caramel and chocolate evident. Roasted flavours flood the pallet, with coffee and toasted grains lasting at the end.

Mouthfeel (5): Oily texture (where the name comes from!) with a lovely smooth and creamy finish. Amazing drinkability with a light grainy (oats) feel in the throat.

Overall (4.5): A fantastic stout with a value enhanced further by the fact that it is only available as a party pig (growler) or in the brewery itself. A great local brew that I personally love.

Been hearing rave reviews on this one... Time to take it for a spin!

A - Pours pitch black with a finger of creamy mocha head, solid retention and some fantastic sheeting lacing. We're off to a great start!

S - The chocolate notes dominate this one with dark cocoa and sweet milk chocolate, followed by some roasted coffee undertones.

T - Much like the scent, the creamy milk chocolate dominates and comes through surprisingly sweet. There's also some sweet almost cherry-ish notes faintly detectable alongside the earthy oats.

M - Creamy and smooth, perfect mouthfeel for a stout.

O - Overall, this did not disappoint. It is all that it was cracked up to be, and if I didn't have to go back to work after this pint, then I could've drank that stuff all afternoon. Why don't they bottle this stuff?!?!?!?!

Poured 22oz pint at the Tap Room.

Pours pitch black with a finger and a half of tan coloured creamy head. Smells lightly of roasted coffee and sweet malt.

First taste includes sweet chocolate notes and bitter coffee. Goes down really smooth though. Very easy to put down a pint or two.

It is my feeling that if someone doesn't usually like Wild Rose's beers, go down to the Tap Room and pick up a pint or pick up a pig!!

Only available on tap.

Was a regular for me at the Hop-n-Brew for a couple years, never did review it, and they don't have it anymore, but sniffed out a pint at the Palomino recently
A - Darkness is spreading! Looked like crude oil coming out of the tap, jet black with short mocha head, very nice lacing
S - sweet milk chocolate, dark roasty malts, and light coffee
T - dark roasty malt, rich creamy oatmeal grains, sweet chocolate, and light piney hops on the finish
M - a little lighter than I would have guessed, creamy smooth and rich with just a little hop dry on the late finish
D - i love everything about this beer, the name, the flavour mix, the feel, for me it's the type of classic yet unique enough brew that defines a solid micro brewer

I found some old notes in a box after moving. Not sure when I had this one... perhaps summer 2009?

Alberta Crude looks the part as it fills my glass with its pitch black body and bubbly mocha head. Some nice lacing is left behind as the head drops to a patchy film. Light tobacco, coffee, oats and chocolate malt make up a fairly standard nose for the style. Taste seems a little tired, but is sessionable nonetheless. Decent oat character goes up against stale coffee grounds, some chocolate and then a whole whack of old espresso in the finish. One of the most coffee tasting non-coffee beers I've had, which is quite the feat! Light body could do with more oomph.

Overall, a not too shabby brew and one that I think would probably work well on nitro, where the body might get a bit of a boost.

from tap room into pint glass nov13 2009

A jet black with a thick thumbs worth of mocha colored head that had fair retention and thick lace even after the foam fell to a thin film

S perhaps a little weak due to the ice cold serving, a little dark chocolate and the malt too go along with it

T leaning more towards coffee then the chocolate but quite nice either way

M a little flat but it gives it a silky feel with no complaints

D very nice overall, too bad you can only get it on tap or in a party pig at the tap room

worth a trip too the tap room on its own, perhaps the best beer I've had from Wild Rose. I predict that this beer would outsell all others if they sold it in 6-packs
