Marzen has its origins in Bavaria and is best known as the classic brew of the Oktoberfest celebration. A copper hued lager, Wild Rose Marzen is characterized by a medium to full body, a toasty malt flavour and a clean dry finish.

It's nice to see Wild Rose brewing another lager after its first-class Czech pilsener.

The Marzen poured into my pint glass a dark gold colour, with some copper highlights. An attractive, two-finger head shrank over time — but never got smaller than a creamy ring atop the body.

Vienna malt and a grainy husk smell made a pleasant, if not overly complex smell. The flavour is unquestionably malty, starting sweet but with sme slightly toasted flavours. There was some hop bitterness at the back end — maybe just a tad too much for the style. Nice dry finish.

This beer had a pleasant, creamy feel and its medium body and carbonation were appropriate for the style. Not an earth-shaking offering from Wild Rose by any stretch of the imagination, but I'll still be a little disappointed when it's gone.

Stopped in at Wild Rose after work and was happy to see another special offering on tap, (too bad I missed the pilsner).
Poured into a tall Wild Rose logoed glass, this is a light brown color, topped with a short white head. The creamy foam had good retention and left thin trails of lace.
Nice grainy malt smell. The flavor was similar, with some natural sweetness from the toasted malt. This was balanced by some slight hop bitterness. Clean and slightly dry finish. Maybe not as dark and malty as some other marzens, but nothing worth complaining about.
Well carbonated to give it a creamy smooth mouthfeel.
It was a warm and sunny day, and they had the front of the brewery opened up to create a patio and enjoy the sun. A great setting to enjoy a well made brew.
A nicely made example of the style, a good transition for those who might be new to Wild Rose beers.

Seasonal beer for Oktoberfest 2011 at Wildrose Brewery, from the tap into a Wildrose beer mug.

Visual (3.5): Amber rusty hue. Good clarity. Head doesn't last at all (it was gone before it got back to me). Light carbonation.

Aroma (3): Extremely light. Lager-esque dominated by light malts and the aroma of hay.

Taste (4): Well balanced malt and hop flavours. Medium malt flavour floods the tastebuds all the way through with enough hops to provide a light bitterness at the end.

Mouthfeel (3): Easily drinkable. Light carbonation that is barely evident gives a slightly watery feel to the beer. Balanced.

Overall (3.5): Not a remarkable beer by any means but an accurate representation of the style. The amber hue was a great match with the scent of hay hitting the mark. The taste and mouthfeel left a little to be desired, requiring a little more punch. A seasonal I would have again. Very drinkable.
