Served lightly chilled in a pint glass.
Bought fresh from the brewery.
Appearance: The beer appears almost black in the glass, with a back light revealing a beautiful deep red colour. A rough pour yields a massive light tan coloured head that lasts incredibly well, but oddly doesn’t leave much in the way of lacing.
Smell: Oh wow, this smells fantastic! Roasted malt combines with chocolate (a lot for a stout that hasn’t had any chocolate added), a touch of dusty cocoa, a touch of coffee and a certain creaminess.
Taste: As the nose suggested, this is a delicious stout. The flavour offers a nice roasted character (actually reminds me a little of the De Molen roast profile) alongside dark chocolate, coffee an underlying creamy sweetness, and a light fruitiness. There is a pleasant roasty bitterness in the finish.
Mouthfeel: More carbonation than I usually like in my stouts, but at least it is nice and smooth. The body is just fuller than light.
Overall: This is one of the best non imperial stouts that I have had and I think there are a few breweries that could learn something from this beer (Rogue…)! I think if the guys at Clarens brewed an imperial version of this it would be pretty special.
