A really good beer but a definite near-miss. It is gorgeous for a black IPA. As dark as a porter and the mouthfeel is comparable to porters - thick and creamy and very appealing. The taste is solid but not outstanding for a black IPA. Everything is good but nothing stands out. Roasted malt, a bit of coffee, a strong but not particularly distinct hop presence in the taste and in the nose. It is a well balanced beer for this style, which is nice - many are not - but black IPAs - to me - should be bold and distinct. I like this beer a lot and think it would be a great summer beer when you're looking for something a bit heavier. It almost but doesn't quite blow me away. But the price is right: $9.99/six. This will make it a more likely choice for me.

Pour is dark brown, fairly right tan colored head. Nose has a decent amount of roast and some black licorice notes. Light char and a bit of citrus orange. Taste is even more char, heavy and dark roast, black malts, citrus and hops behind, lingering bitterness with strong lingering char. Strong carbonation on a light body, a bit slick on the back of the throat.

I dont really understand "Black IPAs" ....Theyre good, but I dont get it. Anyway, This beer is really good.
A- Aesome head retention. This is black as a porter. Nice lacing, a sure sign of a well crafted beer.
S- I smell the black patent(?) Malts and a dank piney floral hop aroma. Its quite nice, I almost smell licorice... interesting.
T- Matches the smell. I like it, I taste pretty much what I smelled, dank piney hops and dark malts. Its really a hopped up porter in my opinion, as for this style I think someone just messed up one time and said uhh its a black IPA, yeah thats it. Hah, some of the best things that happen are accidental. I like it though.
M- Outstanding. kinda chewy, full bodied, smooth, almost creamy, I love this.
Overall this is the best "Black IPA" Ive ever had. And Ive knocked back a few. Wortha try if youre into this sort of thing.

Cheers!

This pours a dark cola-caramel in color. The aroma is piney, dank, and slightly earthy with the grapefruit that I’ve come to expect in a black IPA. There’s a sticky, piney bitterness on the palate, with a grapefruitty dankness and a resiny finish contrasting a hint of roast. More, please.

Anger actually looks like something that generally makes people quite happy: a root beer float. It has a dark cola brown body and is topped with what appears to be a double-scoop of vanilla ice cream and a shot of whipped cream. I don't know whether to sip it or go get a spoon.

The aroma, on the other hand, definitely isn't catering to those with a sweet-tooth - you'll never find anything with a flavour remotely like this on a diner menu (although, actually, root beer is again a fair reference point). It smells markedly earthy - as if it were derived from plant root or tree bark - and has the auras of birch, pine and sassafras.

The flavour expands on this profile and has the invigorating sensation of jumping into cold water. It offers an entire farm's worth of hops and earthy/herbal tastes of bark, wintergreen, smoked pine (lapsang souchong tea), sarsaparilla, black licorice, molasses, and, on the end, equal parts vanilla bean, dark chocolate and coffee (it's these notes that linger on the tongue longest).

The yeast, loads of which rests at the bottom of the bottle, seems to be responsible for not only the persisting mound of mousse atop the beer, but also subtle hints of baking spices; minor notes of nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove are sprinkled throughout the aftertaste. These, in conjunction with all those flavours listed above, ensure the 7.6% alcohol is never tasted.

Anger is nothing unconventional - it's a dark, hoppy beer led by strong forest-like resins that are chased by a gentle roastiness - but it's a Black IPA with a personality of its own. Greenbush is the newest in a long line of Michigan microbreweries to impress the heck out of me - as if that state didn't have enough good beer already. I'm angry they didn't set-up shop where I live!

Fresh bottle from trade.

Brown pour with tan head. Aroma is earthy - grass, dirt. Taste is hoppy - bitter, bright notes of pine with some malt backbone (although not as pronounced as I would like).

Not my favorite but a decent offering from Greenbush.
