12 ounce bottle into a tulip snifter. Bottled 11/10/18, had 3/3/19.
Pours dark brown, mostly opaque, with a one and a half inch foamy head with very good retention and lots of foamy lacing. Aromas of chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla, cocoa, some caramel and toffee, a little smoke, a hint of licorice. Similar flavors- chocolate, less roasted malt, vanilla, some cocoa, light caramel, a little smoke, light raisins. Seems like some lactose, but don’t know if there is. There’s a fair amount of bitterness throughout, especially on the finish. Smooth, a little creamy, a good full body, well carbonated.
At its best fully warmed. Mostly straightforward, but well executed. It grows on you. Worth a purchase.

Appearance: Pours with a one finger beige head that tops the pitch black liquid; impressive lacing action
Smell: Roasty aromatics with tobacco, char and brewer's licorice dominating
Taste: A hint of milk chocolate appears, up front, which I hadn't detected in the aroma but it is gone in a flash, with the aggressive arrival of the char and licorice flavors; the tobacco arrives in the finish, which features a hint of the sweet element I detected at first but the licorice dominates the aftertaste
Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation; warmth in the gullet
Overall: Well, this is called "Pain" after all; I just think it would benefit from a little more elegance

On tap at Greenbush for the release. Served in their signature 12oz. snifter.
Look- Black as night with a very generous mocha head.
Smell- Chocolate, coffee, tobacco, a bit of licorice and roast.
Taste- Bakers chocolate, tobacco, espresso, and a hint of raisin in the finish.
Feel- Thick and oily with considerable alcohol burn going down.
Overall- This is one big, thick and chewy stout. It starts out drinking quite easy and then the true nature of this beast hits you. A very tasty big stout that's perfect for the colder weather.

12oz bottle, generously given to me from a friend in 2014, poured into a Greenbush Snifter.
The beer pours a nice, deep jet black color, very opaque and thick, with a billowy, boisterous caramel colored head, two fingers tall that has nice retention and yields wonderful bands of soapy lace. The aroma is pleasant, creamy, chocolatey, sugary, mild stone fruit, rich grain, just a touch of roastiness. The flavors are nice, lots of roastiness, smooth grain, rich chocolate, light pitted plum, a hint of coffee, a bit sugary, creamy and milky, simple but nice, the alcohol is hidden well, but you can definitely perceive that this is a big beer. The mouthfeel is fantastic, rich, creamy, thick, soft, coating, easy finish that does have a tinge of dryness.
Verdict: A nice beer from Greenbush, a really pleasant beer from a style I'm not super fond of. It's definitely simple, but has all the hallmarks of the style, roasty yet creamy and sweet, ample chocolate character and the almost coffee like profile flavorwise is very enjoyable.
