A - Pours a clear deep brown with a touch of purple. Almost no head, but what is there is very light in color. The biggest contrast between the liquid and head colors that I have seen. Only small spots of lacing.

S - Dark fruits up front, with lots of plum. Chocolate and caramel malt, with a bit of roast. A bit of alcohol in the nose.

T- Similar to smell, win a big chocolate malt presence, and more roasted malts than in the aroma. Dark fruits are also prominent, with big plum notes. Very faint sweetness, with some earthiness and a bit of bitterness on the finish. Not as "big" as some old ales, but very tasty.

M -- Medium mouthfeel but not too heavy. Bitter and dry on the finish.

O - Pretty big plum presence here, which I enjoyed but might not be for everyone. Very enjoyable take on the style and on the lighter end of the old ale spectrum.

12 ounce bottle into a snifter. Bottled 11/17/14. Have had fresher, let this one age slightly more than a year.

Pours a deep amber, garnet on the edges. Small head, some foamy lacing. Smells of malt, plums, figs, dates, raisins, slight red wine. Taste follows the nose with the malt, plums, figs, raisins, dates. Also caramel, prunes, brown sugar. Light alcohol. Fairly smooth, good body- but maybe a touch light for the style. Good level of carbonation.

This is a good beer that's true to the style. Letting it age seemed to bring out the depth of the flavor and aroma. Worth a purchase, especially if you're at Greenbush when you do.

Type: on-tap pint
Glass: Pint
From: Ashley's in Ann Arbor
Price: $6.50

Appearance: Dark brown almost black. No head by time I got it, but a nice white lacing around the outside. almost opaque.

Smell: Malty goodness. sweet, some dark fruits, a touch of alcohol.

Taste: pretty sweet, strong malts, dark fruits and a nice touch of alcohol. good but could use just a little something more

Mouthfeel: medium to slightly heavier. just a tad sticky.

Overall: a well brewed beer but needs just one more tweak to make great. I like my old ales a little bit more character. This one could use maybe some earthy hops, some age in an oak barrel, or maybe a combination of hops and toffee. My second beer from greenbush. both were good, neither wowed me.

Served in a snifter at Beer Market - Schaumburg.

The musical set here is surprisingly good... ...Anyway, this stuff pours a very dark, slightly murky midnight sienna topped by a half-finger of off-khaki foam. The nose comprises dates, light maple syrup, dark fruits, brown sugar, and a touch of rye bread. The taste brings in more of the same, that heapin' helpin' of dates really coming through and choking out all competitors. The body is a solid medium, bordering on hefty, with a light moderate carbonation and a generally smooth feel. Overall, a surprisingly solid beer, but one whose enjoyment is predicated on your taste for dates.

On tap @ Hackney's. Pitch black pour into a snifter with a surprisingly light colored just off-white head. Plenty of stick and retention.

Smell is chocolate and dark fruits / clearly desk malts in play. No hop aroma, but that's OK.

Taste is more of the same, dark and roasty malts. Sweet dark fruit covered in slight bitter chocolate.

Mouthfeel is on the heavy side, but appropriate given the flavor and low carbonation.

This to me is a stout, and a damn good one. Not sure how it gots in the "old ale" universe, but who cares.
