Darker amber in color, with a firm, off-white head, that retained as a ringlet, and left some dots of lacing on the glass. Nose was fairly malty for an IPA, with some honey sweetness, pithy hops. In the taste, grapefruit pith, candied orange peel, bubblegum, persistent sugars--pale malts, honey--which took the edge off any hop bitterness that may have been present. Kind of like tropical candy. Not really my kind of IPA, but it was actually still pretty good. Light-medium body, and decently drinkable.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy orange-tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, honey, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with sweet honey and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a nice citrus forward hop presence all around.

Appearance is beautiful, deep almost red amber color, almost opaque and I like that. This beer has character. Smell is fantastic!I smell apple, alcohol, and herbal-pine-citrus hops. In your face hop flower goodness. Taste is what Id expect after smelling it. This is a strong beer, the alcohol is not well hidden, but for the way this one turned out, Im digging that, its a big beer. Almost like a barley wine. Mouthfeel is nice, almost chewy, definitely not light. Its a bit on the expensive side at 15 a 4 pack, but compared to the 10 dollar 4 pack also purchased at the same time, which shall remain nameless, this one kicked its ass and was well worth it!

Appearance - Dark golden and very cloudy. Light carbonation but some decent lacing as it was drunk.

Smell - First bottle had a wonderful aroma - lots of honey and tangy hops. The second bottle definitely had a smell of alcohol in addition to the honey and hops.

Taste - A great balance of sweetness and hoppiness. Nice example of an IIPA. The taste lasts through the end of the beer - no diminishing as the mouth is coated.

Mouthfeel - Thick, smooth, even.

Overall - A great IIPA. Due to the high alcohol content, the desired balance of alcohol to hops and honey might be hard to achieve consistently.

At first sight this beer is a deep amber with a small head( thats what she said ) with tiny bubbles, looks almost like honey in a glass with a frothiness on top

Smell , You can smell the honey and the sweetness right away then the high IBU smell in between,

Smooth mouth feel , the honey is right on top of your tounge on this one, then dry high ibu feeling in the back of your throat, with the big ass alcohol warming tingle from this gift

Taste like a dipa should , well how i like them anyways , bitter from the high ibu's yet sweet and sorta crisp in flavor. Very drinkable and pleasant . Goes down super easy, no real alcohol flavor or presence for such a big beer.

Over all this is very good in style and all around, The sweetness in this is amazing , pure honey flavor with a touch of citrus, Highly recommend this beer for those who like the higher IBU beers and Those looking to find something with a little twist on a old classic style.

A - Cloudy (almost opaque) amber with two fingers of tan foamy head that leaves moderate lacing. Not a bad looking beer, but I wish it had left better lacing.
S - Fermented honey, hops, banana(?). Sweeter smelling than most IIPAs.
T - Similar to the smell. Sweet malts, wet hop bitter, faint grapefruit. Very balanced flavor, less hoppy flavor than I expect from an IIPA.
M - Medium-high body, low carbonation, wet. Very little heat. I was surprised to learn that this was 10.1% ABV. Very drinkable.
O - Interesting IIPA, sweeter and less dry than most, perhaps too heavy on malt. I would recommend this to people that like some hops but not the extreme hops that seem to be in favor right now.

Had on-tap at Boat Works in St. Clair Shores, Michigan for $6.25 a pint.

I've been wanting to have this beer for awhile, but most places where I've seen it on draft have charged insane prices... $6.25 a pint for a IIPA that's over 10% is a very fair price. Digging in...

Appearance: A dark amber color. Quite a dark red color... maybe a little darker than I usually expect from even an Imperial IPA. Two finger head sat on top when I got my pint, and it looked awesome. Lacing was sip-for-sip from top to bottom. Nearly a flawless looking beer.

Smell: Sweet. Bursting with a lot of citrus, but there's a solid earthy note as well. I can't pinpoint exactly what fruit it is, but it's a very inviting citrus and tropical aroma. I've smelled better, but this still smells outstanding.

Taste/feel: Yeah, another great beer from Greenbush that I'd give an "A" rating to. The look of it is glorious, the smell is candle-worthy, the taste follows suit with a sweet start, and then bitter, drying finish, and the mouth feel of Brother Benjamin is awesome... medium/full feel that's nearly perfect. The alcohol in this is nearly untraceable, making this a delicious, dangerous beer.

I have certainly had some better Imperial IPAs, but few better that have been over 10%. This is nearly a masterpiece of a beer, and any Double IPA fan should seek this out.

Brother Benjamin has a somber, almost ghostly feel just like its label. Though a gleaming orange when backlit, the beer is both shadowy and hazy, as if entirely enveloped in a mist or smoke; it's not at all transparent. Despite sporting a white collar there's probably more foam on the glass than on the surface.

The aroma is a breath of spring... or is it fall? It has bright candied citrus notes but also plenty of resinous pine; it conjures thoughts of colourful flowers as well as dead, dried-out tree bark. Though noticeably hoppy, it's the dark honey that's appreciated most.

At 114 IBU and 10.1% alcohol this is certainly no small beer, yet it's surprisingly smooth to drink (and that's not a term I like to use often). Clover honey has made for a velvety and sweet texture that aggrandizes an already rich malt profile. The booze sort of blends into a nectarous and sustaining finish.

The taste is an amalgam of sticky-sweet and earthy bitter flavours with frequent spikes of citrus. Notes of rum-soaked pineapple are blended with tree sap and biscuity, toffee-laced malts. Creamy caramel is mixed with flower petals and pine needles. There's an impression of grill-charred orange, mango and lime.

Greenbush Brother Benjamin does indeed mystify. Honey in a beer (specifically one of double-digit alcohol) often makes syrupy, but this one is smooth, sumptuous and succulent. It's big but mellow, as ample as it is approachable, a perfect companion for relaxation.

12oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

(A)- Pours a reddish copper amber color. Produced some good white froth and lacing.

(S)- A fairly spiced yet sweet caramel malt body meets a yeasty bubblegum, lemon, and grapefruit citrus. A bit odd with the yeast acting a bit strange in an almost hefeweiss type of aroma.

(T)- A touch strange. Kind of spiced with a potent yeast profile. Almost bubblegum in flavor with a potent caramel sweetness.

(M)- The carbonation level is fine, but the yeast really seems to be off-centered and causing this to be a bit off considering this is supposed to be a DIPA.

(O)- Not bad, but definitely a strange version of a DIPA for sure. Not one of Greenbush's best.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a tulip glass

A- Slightly hazy, dark burnt orange with a big toasted marshmallow head.

S- Big citrus, resiny aroma, sweet syrupy notes. Alcohol is hidden well.

T- Big bitter citrus peel, sweet notes similar to nose, bitterness and fruit aftertaste. Again not getting a lot of the alcohol.

M- Slightly lighter than other DIPAs I've had but still good, drinks remarkably well for the alcohol.

O- Been waiting to pick up any Greenbush beers cuz I wanted to try this one first. Really pleasantly surprised how great this is, reminds me some of Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree.

Appearance: Slightly hazed red-tinged copper. Head is off-white and creamy. Drops to a small cap with decent retention. Splotches of lacing. Moderate carbonation on the pour.

Smell: Mega bready. Biscuit dough, caramel and caramelized malt sweetness. Raw honey. Hops run a solid bitterness with a floral edge. Herbal with a touch of sweetness. Slight earthiness as well. Syrupy sweet malt blends well with the raw honey. Not particularly aggressive.

Taste: Pithy bitterness layered over a slightly syrupy sweet malt base. Deeply cooked and caramelized malts. Assertive honey. Hops are leafy and herbal with some citrus and pine needle bitterness. A bit earthy. Raw honey. Some generic fruitiness. Something akin to marmalade. Big bitterness tempered by the raw biscuit malt sweetness. Some spicy alcohol on the back.

Mouthfeel: Slick, bordering on full body. Moderate carbonation. Clean finish.

Overall: My adopted brother is a bit odd.

An interesting take with the raw honey. It's big and syrupy with enough bitterness to balance. It's not the best thing out there, but it's good and that's more than enough.

These guys are doing something right. I would put this on par with Bell's Hopslam. This is a terrific DIPA with some great honey sweetness to balance out the aggressive Hop Bitterness. Please excuse not formatting this by category. Hands down, would recommend.

12 oz bottle served in a Greenbush snifter.

A: Pours a semi clear ruby color with an off-white head forming on the pour. it recedes slowly to a thick cap and collar that leaves tons of splotchy lace down the glass.

S: Lots of bready malts, dried grass and raw honey. Candied grapefruit with a bitter pine as well.

T: Bready malts. Light citrus. Sweet grapefruit with a dried grass backing. Pretty sweet overall with a light bitterness in the finish.

M: Medium bodied with a medium carbonation level. slightly sticky mouthfeel.

O: A little sweet and malt forward for my liking. I've had the fresh from the brewpub and out of bottles and it still doesn't quite jive with me. Not bad, but not something I'd want to go after again.

12oz. Hazy dark orange pour. A thick fine bubbled white head. Retained very well.

Aroma, Some resiny pine and citrus. Fairly balanced with some malty candied caramel.

Taste, yellow raisin and caramel. Quickly goes into heavy citrus. Grapefruit. A very dry finish, with the bitter lingering nicely.

Probably a little over medium bodied. Creamy and coating, but the dryness keeps it all in check. Alcohol is very well hidden, drinks dangerously easy.

One of the better new DIPAs I've had in a while. Would recommend even if just to try. Thumbs up for this one Greenbush.

A double IPA from Michigan brewed with honey. What is Hopslam? Nope.

A: Very dark, slightly pastel brown in color. Forms a modest sized off-white, light tan colored head. Little retention. Some light lacing.

S: Aroma is quite earthy. Very woody, almost plywood-like, but the pine resin notes do help keep this one from smelling like a piece of furniture.

T: Taste is similar, but more expressive. Earthy and woody, with notes of pine and balsa wood. Lots of caramel malt with a mild sweetness.

M: Full bodied with lower carbonation and a very strong bitterness. Dry, bordering on astringent.

O: Well, this is certainly a DIPA. The honey barely shows up anymore than a fleeting bitterness, while the hops are old school earthy and pine. None of that new-fangled juicy Citra or tropical Galaxy shit here. In the end, a pretty good beer. I like the heavier malts with the earthy hops, but, at $15/4-pack, I can't justify the price.

Appearance: a deep orange. a bit hazy and a nice off white head that leaves a lacing

Smell: big in your face hops. i can tell there is a strong malt presence as well but i have trouble getting past the hops

Taste: starts off with citrus and piney hops, and an intense bitterness blocks out the rest of the beer from my taste buds. i can pick up more but there's no way i can tell what is going on through this sea of hops

Mouthfeel: extremely bitter and pretty heavy.

Overall: I think i need to work up to this one. for now this is my rating but I may have to revisit it after working my way up to hop bombs. it certainly has a lot of potential and greenbush does know their way around the hops

A: Hazy, deep caramelly brown, with a half-finger's worth of off-white head and moderate visible carbonation.

S: Sweet caramel malts, some pine and bitter hops, and a restrained booziness.

T: Follows the nose. Quite malty with significant caramel sweetness. Moderate hops (I get pine, grass, and citrus pith), but they're nearly overwhelmed by the sweet malty boozy caramel flavors. Hop bitter and alcohol heat in the finish.

M: Thick, sticky body, low carbonation sensation, and the alcohol is a bit too prominent.

O: I think this toes the DIPA/barleywine line, but it does come down on the right side - barely. Too much caramel malts for me to really enjoy it, but it's not bad.

We crack the top and pour a brew of sunset ruby-orange into our Founders snifters. It holds a two finger head of big khaki colored bubbles, showing excellent retention, and leaving rings and spots of patterned lacing around the glass. A cidery haze permeates clarity with the dregs from the bottom of the bottle, but no outright sediment is noted. Carbonations appears to be on the light side. The aroma is heavy with floral, nectary, and grapefruity hops, giving a perfumed fruitiness to it. The malts to meet are crisp and pale, but do dip down into toasty caramels, with fusel booziness, cotton candy esters, strawberry and blueberry bite, musky moss, mineral, and salt crackers. Our first impression is that the flavoring is heavy and spicy as the nose suggested, but more to the bittered side of the hops, and less to the sweeter caramel side of the malts. As we sip, the taste begins with oily grapefruity hops and rind, slick waxiness, booze fumes, black pepper, tannic tea leaf, cotton candy and lighter browned banana esters, nectarine, and apricot skins. Moving to the peak is a flash of white sugar sweetness that is quickly countered by a hoppy herbal bitterness, along with pine bark, sulfur and mineral, musk, and leafy vegetals, with the hotness of the booze dragging us to the end. Here we are hit with bittered herbal and earthy hops, mineral-laden dirt, graphite, floral perfumes, raw honeycomb, lemon rind, sesame seed, buttery bread, toasted pales, clover, and far off medicinals. The aftertaste breathes of chalk, sawdust, moss, earthy and floral hops, nectarine pit, walnuts, parsnip root, green grassiness, biscuity butters, toast, mineral, peppery booze, and chalked yeast. The body is rather full, and the carbonation is medium. Each sip gives nice slurp and smack, with slightly lesser cream and froth. Finishing pop is also nice, but falls away into a stiff pucker. The mouth is left slick at first, eventually breathing chalky dryness into the hard palate. The abv is apparent but appropriate, and the beer sips easily.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was its aroma. The nose was filled with a nice balance of clean, fruit, and floral hoppiness, with a malt bill that gave just the right amount of depth and toast, without going overboard into American barleywine or strong ale territory. The flavor, however, showed a bit more bitterness than expected. This was not to its ultimate detriment, but was rather more of a surprise in that it unbalanced the sweetness of those aromatics. The booze was decently well hidden, and moderately contributory in the end. This is a great introduction for us to an up and coming local brewery, and it certainly does a nice job of generating excitement for the rest of their stock.

Poured from their 12oz bottle...

Appearance - Pours 3 fingers of tight khaki foam, body is a deep opaque brown amber, by far the darkes and murkiest dipa I've ever seen, leaves big thick lacing. Really looks like a barleywine.

Smell - Floral hops, pineapple, candied orange, tropical notes, whiff of carmels, and perhaps some butterscotch.

Taste - Whoah, rich ripe plums, rum cake, sweet ruby grapefruit, warm butterscotch with an accent on the scotch, touches of brown sugar and molasses, finishes pretty hot from the alcohol, slightly sweet grapefruit zests, and a slight spice heat, like white pepper.

Mouthfeel - Higher side of medium, sweet and somewhat mouthcoating, carb is on the lower side and very smooth and foaming, which gives the impression of being mouthcoating - and really lets the heat from the alcohol settle in vs. any kind of scrub.

Overall - The only sign of this being a dipa is in the nose - otherwise the appearance, taste and mouthfeel are much more like a barleywine/scotch ale/wee heavy. The label says "prepare to be mystified" - and I truly am, why this is classified as a dipa is certainly a mystery to me. And as this warms... well, just throw back a shot of scotch - less filling, same taste. I can't recommend this.

Thanks to a good guy, who shall remain anonymous, for this extra in a recent trade full of Michigan goodness. Popped open while watching a bit of The Incredible & poured ably by my 10 year old Cicerone-in-training. 12 oz. bottle split with my wife.

Pour is dark murky orange shot through with muddy brown; very viscous. Nose runs along in the same vein, the hops are earthy & muddled while simultaneously slightly sweetened. Good? Weird.

Brother Benjamin is malting all over the place. Big old sweet malts overcome the hops, the nose in profile is more like an old ale than an IPA. The hops match the nose, farmland dirt & dankness. Drinkable? Ah, no.

Blech. Six or seven sips of this leave me yearning for clean hops or deep malts or a barrel or strychnine. Anything else. This is a malt-bomb coupled up with dank earth, not a combo I'd ever seek out. Drain-pour.

12oz bottle, hazy light brown colored body with a frothy, tan head that holds good retention & leaves chunky lacing. Looks more like a barley wine to me though. Aromas are fresh, earthy, citric, floral hops, backed by a huge dose of caramel, brown sugar, honey. Tastes are similar to aroma: loads of caramel, brown sugar, bready malt, honey, with earthy, citric hops, a bit boozy and hot, while bitterness lingers on. There is some diacetyl that is more noticeable as it warms. Once again, I'm thinking this is more like a hopped up barley wine. Mouth-feel is creamy, smooth, fullish body. Overall, I like this more as a barley wine. I was really excited about it, but I found it to be confusing as the malt profile is so strong. Decent complexity, just not a DIPA to me.

this was a huge huge disappointment all around, not least because it shares my name. it pours nice enough, tarnished bronze in color and mostly clear, with a bold white head that lasts. the nose on it is off, like something has gone terribly wrong, its not really hoppy at all, but rather sweet and just downright weird, floral and chemical laden, I do not understand why this smells like it does, but its turning me right off. the taste is the same, only the off elements are intensified. its like bad compost, preservative acid, and decaying hops that are only bitter and lack flavor almost entirely. its more like an American barleywine gone wrong than an ipa, with a huge and messy grain bill. the feel is like licking a battery, burns the whole palate from all the alcohol. fusel notes dominate the finish, carbonation tapers off, and the beer is undrinkable in terms of both size and flavor. im writing about this like its a crap macro ice beer instead of a craft ipa, which is maybe unfair, but the bar has been set awfully high for craft ipa, and I expect a lot more from a brewer who takes pride in his product. this is a few levels below even the most basic of double ipas, and greenbush owes us one here...

12oz bottle, $4.49 at Drakes Party Center in Kalamazoo.

Pours dark amber with a beige, fluffy head of two inches. A solid skim coat and plenty of stringy lacing for the duration.

Aromatics lead off with pungent piney resins, dank-drizzled candies, and fruit skins. A hint of spice-dusted leather and caramel follows through.

On the full side of medium bodied with a chewy, tacky mouthfeel.

Sweet malt starts the palate but a semi-numbing hop assault quickly follows. Resinous and piney with plenty of spicy bite and warming alcohol.

Finishes with lingering malt, piney hops, and boozy alcohol.

Tasty beer but more of a Barleywine than an IIPA. The malt character is almost as big as the hops, which are one-dimensional as well.

Appearance: ruddy brown body with an off-white two finger head that leaves tons of sticky lacing. The body color is not all that pleasing but, the lacing is very good.

Aroma: floral, pine sap, earthy caramel and grains; while I am drinking the pine note seems to change to a grapefruit rind note.

Flavors: the sweet dark amber honey is noticeable and it seems to control the hoppy style; notes of pink grapefruit, floral-herbal, earthy caramel, sour bread, multigrain bread, white peppercorn,

Mouthfeel: honey up front and going down the middle with citrus notes swirling around the edges with a dusty white peppercorn finish along with some warmth from the alcohol, a linger citrus peel on the palate, dry, moderate carbonation,
Nice bitterness with a zesty feel and the earthy malts almost mute the hops … almost.

To the Point: I was told since I like Hopslam that I would like this. Well, this is okay. The way I feel right now about this beer I might give it a B. The honey in Hopslam seemed to become part of the hops; example sweet citrus, sweet floral. Maybe Greenbush used a different grade of honey that is earthier and has a touch a caramel. And thinking about that, which could be why the malts standout the way they do.

To me Bell’s Hopslam and Witch’s Hat Big Doedish are top shelf type beers; this is just the next shelf down; give it a try and see what you think. Yes, I would buy this again.
