12oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

(A)- Pours a hazed deep auburn amber color. Some white froth.

(S)- Quite spicy up front with nutmeg and clove. Very subtle pumpkin to it; very spicy up front.

(T)- Very similar to the smell. Very strong spice notes; very little pumpkin though.

(M)- A good carbonation level. Overall, its a spice box with nutmeg and clove with subtle cinnamon. A touch bitter.

(O)- Overall, not bad, but wishing the pumpkin came through more to help balance it out.

Unicorn Killer is a gleaming, clear orange-red with much the color and clarity of a garnet. An off-white head recedes to foam, which in turn leaves a thin ring where the beer settles and follows with some light spottiness.
Spices are strong on the nose, not overdone, sort of a mixed bouquet with some sweet and some more of the savory kitchen variety, but definitely featuring cinnamon on the forefront. There's a bit of flesh as well, with some maltiness holding up and giving some breads, caramel and brown sugar notes.
The flavor has more of a tang, and the spiciness hits harder. Some fleshy, leafy pith brings out a surprising bitterness.
The medium body holds together well. There's plenty of crispness and a good smoothness, though a bit of aspiring bites the back of the throat just into the finish.

12 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. Another new beer to me from Greenbush Brewing Co., expectations are fairly high since I've enjoyed what I've tried from them so far. Nice bottle art, and my bottle claims a 7.30% abv.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.

A - Pours two fingers of creamy tan head that leaves some nice scattered lacing. Body is a thick, creamy, dark caramel orange with some dark sediment in the glass. Looks pretty nice for the style.

S - Smell is different than most other pumpkin beers I've come across. Fresh earthy pumpkin / gourds, buttered popcorn, brisk cola, and some dusty yeast funk. Slightly strange smelling for a pumpkin beer, but I'm liking it.

T - Taste follows the nose - earthy pumpkin / gourd, buttered popcorn, mild alcohol heat, some indistinct herbal qualities, and some cream.

M - Feel is full, smooth, and creamy, with some herbal bitterness lingering on the palate. More full-bodied than your average pumpkin ale, which makes for a nice sipper. Good carbonation.

Overall, a solid pumpkin ale from Greenbush. Definitely one of the more unique and memorable takes on the style that I've tried this year. Slightly higher than normal abv, and a fuller thicker body makes this one a nice sipper. Recommended.

I picked up a bottle of Greenbush's Unicorn Killer around a couple weeks ago for $2.09 at The Lager Mill, I'm always down to try new beers from Greenbush and I'm interested to see what they can do with this style, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date, but it just showed up so I'm sure it's fresh, 2013 release. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into an imperial pint glass.

A- The label looks ok, it's a little weird looking and not the most eye catching, but the name does stick out. It poured a slightly clear amber orange color that took on more of an amber/copper color when held to the light with one and half fingers worth of off white head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and left some spotty lacing behind. This is a nice looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a medium amount of sweetness that had a light brown sugar like aroma to it followed by some malts that impart a toffee and a lightly roasted malt aroma. Up next comes the spices that impart a cinnamon and nutmeg like aroma with a lighter pumpkin like aroma. This beer had a nice aroma that's fairly true to style.

T- The taste seems to be a little similar to the aroma and it starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness that had a light brown sugar like flavor to it followed by a some malts that impart a toasted malt, grainy, and light toffee like flavor. Up next comes the spices which imparts some cinnamon and nutmeg like flavors with a very light pumpkin flavor that's hardly noticeable. On the finish comes a a slightly lower amount of high bitterness with a malty and spicy aftertaste with some lingering bitterness. I wasn't a big fan of the taste of this beer, it was way too bitter for the style.

M- Not that smooth, slightly creamy, medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel isn't that great, it could be much smoother.

Overall I wasn't a fan of this beer and I didn't think it was a good example of the style, it lacked that good authentic pumpkin aspect and it was substituted with spices and the bitterness was way too dominating and lingering. This beer didn't have good drinkability, it wasn't that smooth and the taste didn't really hold my attention, one is more than enough for me, there's no way I would want another one. What I liked the most about this beer was the appearance and aroma, they were both pretty nice and worked well with this beer. What I liked the least about this beer was the taste and mouthfeel, they weren't that great and they had some off aspects that need to be worked on. I wouldn't buy this beer again, it's pretty easy to find a Pumpkin Ale that's much better than this one and I wouldn't recommend it. All in all I was let down with this beer, Greenbush is a pretty good brewery but this beer just didn't do it for me, better luck next time guys.

12oz bottle
no date
oversized wine glass

A- A very coppery orange with a slight haze, thin off white head. spotty lacing.

S- A mild pumpkin pie, marshmellos, faint brown sugars, has a hint of nutmeg and cinnamon
that makes it noticeable but not strong. Smells nifty

T- Diluted pumpkin sweetness up front, some breadyness and spice in the middle and finishes off with a very odd bitterness that isn't quite hoppy, but bitter and not really to my liking.

M- Medium body with medium carbonation, has a slight creaminess to it.

O- Started off with a light sweet pumpkin smell which held promise. The first drink let me down as it was not even close to the nose and had that really not very good bitterness, almost metallic, which I thought wrecked it for me. Some may like it, I don't and wont be getting more.
