First tried this pub when I had just turned 18 and we used to go there at lunchtime during school.
It's never busy, being quite well out of the way, and there being other more popular pubs in Chelmsford (though I don't know why because they are all much more expensive and have a smaller selection) It's a nice place to sit and have a chat with some friends, though they also have 2 teles with sports and news on one, and usually something else on the other, which is at the opposite end of the place.
They serve all the regular pub drinks - fosters, kroenenburg, strongbow, guinness etc though usually if I want a lager I go for Amstel, and their regular bitter is Adnams Bitter. They also usually have a few pumps open with 5 or so guest beers, usually from Adnams, Fullers or a smaller local brewery.
The barman and his wife and very helpful and friendly, and if you're drinking before 3pm you get 10% which is a good discount on already quite good value beer (Amstel works out to be about £2.68 and a pint of the cask ale is the same, though £2.50 on their easter beer festival - add on a pound for the average beer price in the town)
