Half-pint on cask at the Euston Tap.

A: Clear, very dark red body - almost looks black at first glance. The board just calls this an IPA, for which style it's entirely too dark; now that I see from the brewery's website that it's intended to be a Black IPA/Cascadian Dark Ale/American Black Ale, the color makes a lot more sense. On top is a 1/2 inch of super-creamy, long-lasting, lace-shedding tan foam. Lovely looking beer.

S: It certainly smells like an IPA, despite the initial appearance that suggested otherwise. Nothing here but huge, resinous, herbal, piney hops. Some floral notes as well. Super, super hoppy, but a little harsh with the purely bitter, resinous varieties: some citrus would be welcome. It finishes with some slight toffee, but delivers nothing bue pure bitterness on the aftertaste.

T: Starts out creamy, with light caramel malt, and then just explodes with hugely bitter hops. Man that's intense. Still not my favored kind of hoppiness, but I'm still highly impressed.

M: Soft, smooth, well-carbonated for a cask. Lovely.

O: What can I say, Summer Wine knows how to deal with hops. If you're in the UK (or anywhere else, I suppose) and have chance to sample one of their beers, I strongly suggest that you take the opportunity. Great stuff.
