Served in a tulip.
Cloudy burgundy color with a short white head composed of small bubbles. Little retention, no lace.
I found the aroma to be a little weak - especially if compared to the benchmarks of the style coming out of Germany. Notions of toffee, brown sugar, and sweet yeasty esters.
The flavor was largely masked by the carbonation at first. After letting this warm and settle over dinner it opens up a bit. Deep malty flavors of bread crust, toffee, and caramel come through.
Carbonation was way too harsh on this beer.
Overall not a bad brew, but nothing I'd order on a return trip. I feel like American brewed Doppelbocks are like American Quads. Few breweries actually attempt to brew one, and far fewer succeed in that endeavor.
Serving type: on-tap
