Market Garden Brewery sits next door to its big brother West Side Market in Cleveland's Ohio City. MGB is a vast space with front and rear bars with tables throughtout, a large outdoor patio and an equally large basement bar and dining room. The place is fairly dark with really cool, locally built lighting throughout. The beer selection is decent with 7-10 house brews on-tap and another dozen or so guest beers available, nothing too rare but good quality stuff. Samplers are available and customers are encouraged to only sample the MGB beers but I have been there and was able to throw a guest beer or 2 on a 6-sampler set. Their beers usually is a mix of a wheat, IPA or two, stout, porter, scotch ale and seasonals. Food is good quality and i think is slightly overpriced. Service is attentive especially if you are sitting at any of the bars. MGB will succeed due to its location and proprietor but I think their menu pricing needs an adjustment. Overall, def a place to stop on the Cleveland beer tour. (1,011 characters)

V-This place is pretty good sized and located in a cool area of town near the West Side Market (like right next door to the Market). There is a nice patio and lots of tables spread through a few rooms. The crowd was younger when I visited for lunch on a Saturday in late May.

Q-The house-brewed beers that I tried (a pils, a wheat, and an IPA) were solid, if not spectacular. The guest taps were above-average offerings from the likes of Bells and Left Hand. Solid.

Ser-Our server was friendly and she could answer questions about the beers she was selling. Service was maybe a bit slow, but nothing awful.

Sel-There was a good number and variety of Market Garden beers on tap. The selection was seasonally appropriate with more wheat beers and lagers on tap than you might find in December, but they also had an RIS if you were interested. The guest taps were a nice touch. I also saw a few bottles on the list.

F-My lunch was OK, but not great. I polled my lunch companions and received similar reports. Typical brewpub food.

O-A nice place with some tasty beers and a fun, Cleveland vibe. (1,098 characters)

We had the opportunity to visit Market Garden recently while passing through on a trip from Detroit, Michigan to Rochester, New York. We had originally stopped in this area of Cleveland hoping to revisit Great Lakes Brewing Company, but after being informed about the long wait for a table, we decided to try Market Garden across the street instead.

After finding a parking space (parking is either on the street or in public lots, and did prove a bit tricky for a Saturday) we approached Market Garden Brewery from its rear. The outside looked a lot like a beautiful farmer’s market, with large block lettering clearly marking the front entrance. In fact, the brewery sits adjacent to the 100 year-old Western Market, and has clearly taken advantage of this prime, foot traffic-heavy location. Upon entering the establishment, we were immediately greeted by a hostess counter, along with a small cooler filled with seasonal bottled offerings, including their swing-top Festivus Ale. The interior had a warm industrial feel, sporting high ceilings, brick walls, and tear dropped shaped lights hanging down over wooden tables. As the hostess lead us to our table, we only then began to get a feeling for the true size of this place. It’s huge!! There are 2-3 bars throughout the one-floor spread, with large windows towards the backmost seating area serving as a viewing platform for their brewery floor’s mash tuns. There was also a large outdoor “beer garden” that was not being used during the winter months for anything but smoking cigarettes, but looked like it would be beautifully inviting throughout the summer.

The beer menu was a good size for a smaller brewery, and the offerings included 10-15 house beers on tap. We have had the Citramax before at another local bar, and comparatively were a bit disappointed in our selections on this trip, which included Cluster Fuggle and their Wallace Tavern Scotch Ale. After finishing these we decided to split a Citramax and were just as pleased with this one as the first time we had it at a bar coincidentally next door to Market Garden. We supplemented these with a selection from their food menu as well. We were, however, a bit disappointed with their vegetarian options. If you are a vegetarian, you will pretty much be limited to sides and maybe an appetizer for your meal. We ordered the roasted garlic bean dip, Brussel sprouts, stuffed Piquillo peppers, and a cheeseburger. We asked if there was a vegetarian soup option, and were informed that the tomato bisque was vegetarian, so we ordered that as well. Unfortunately, the food portion of the trip was not a great experience for us. We waited approximately an hour and a half to get the food once placing the order. We asked several times for an update, and were told that they were very busy and would get the order out as soon as possible. Additionally, the tomato bisque arrived with visible pieces of meat throughout the soup. The stuffed piquillo peppers were good, but everything else was just average. After finishing out meal, we purchased a couple bottles of the Festivus ale and headed back to our cars feeling a bit annoyed about the long delay.

Overall, this was a somewhat aggravating experience, mostly because of the delay in food service. Otherwise we enjoyed average beers and average food in a nice modern facility. We would not be excited to return for a meal currently, but the Citramax is phenomenal, and would make repeated trips there for a beer a high point should we ever find ourselves in Cleveland again. (3,583 characters)

Nice looking place in a great location. The bar is pretty large and wraps around. Lots of TV's and the staff is friendly. I sat at the bar and told them to give me a second to see what I wanted. The bartender then started chatting and I was neglected to the beer menu a little longer than I wanted. Same thing happened when we wanted the check so we just left cash. Still a pleasant place. (389 characters)
