Well damn if this isn't an underrated beer!

12oz can into Captain Lawrence tulip. Big thanks to BA morningthief for picking this up for me in Denver.

Appearance: Opaque brown orange. 1.5 inch frothy white head that lasts and leaves a wall of lacing. Looks like something out of a cauldron, and good.

Smell: Hefty dose of yet-to-be-boiled pale malt, along with sweet candy and crystal malt and an undercurrent of dank and grapefruity Summit hops.

The taste tells that this is a seriously hopped beer, but it's not very apparent in the nose. That said, the smell is sort of like baking cookies in the grain section of the homebrew shop. This is a good thing. Some chewy, citrusy and pineapple fruitiness as well.

Taste: Not since fresh original-recipe Oskar Blues GUBNA have I tasted the full force of Summit hops: tastes like a mix of marijuana and green onion. However, in this beer it's balanced by caramel malt to give it a strawberry and caramel flavor.

Those 3 flavors don't sound very good together do they? Well, they are. This is a *great* triple IPA, like a better thought out Devil Dancer (or a better thought out GUBNA). Subtle bitterness, amazingly well hidden ABV, unrestrained Summit hops delivered in a way that makes sense.

Mouthfeel: Full side of medium bodied. Sort of hop oily thick and slightly creamy. Mild dryness but I don't really miss it. Works perfectly with the flavor.

Overall: Very impressed with this beer. It's like a barleywine-ized Green Flash DIPA with more focused Summit hops and a more pleasing grain bill.

My friend tells me the locals drink a lot of this beer. They have it good in Colorado.

On tap at Renegade in Denver, CO. Poured into a taster glass, 3oz, today 1/18/2014.

Beautiful amber-yellow body, clear as the Colorado skies today. Comes with a 1cm white head, drops quickly but leaves behind lots of lacing. Beautiful beer to be honest, of any style.

Smells very citrusy with a lot of toffee, honey and some bread. This is a well balanced nose, though I would prefer more citrus to unbalance it a little for the style.

Flavor wise, it actually works. Hoppy citrus flavors evoking grapefruit and lemons, balanced out nicely by the sweet breadiness and a small alcohol burn as you'd expect from a 11.2% beer. Well done.

Thinner to medium body, a little watery but not so much that you can't enjoy the brew. Fairly darn bitter aftertaste of a crapton of pine resin, very resinous as well.

It's not saying much but this is a lot better of a TIPA than Devil Dancer. I like the citrus forward flavors that are balanced out by a ton of malt sweetness. Nicely done and if I crushed TIPAs on a regular basis this would be in my rotation.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #77 (June 2013):

LOOK: Hazed peachy amber, good froth

SMELL: Super dank, pomelos, star fruit, fresh grass, estery alcohol

TASTE: Smooth, orangey, hemp seeds, semi-chewy, spicy alcohol, floral, very bitter, tropical fruit, yeast, warming, juicy, biscuity, nutty grain, long hop sharpness; semidry, bitter finish

Chalk this one up to another brewer trying to boast 100-plus IBUs. We thought this phase of craft beer was over. Not exactly balanced at all here, but we are sure that wasn’t the brewer’s intention anyway. Somewhat drinkable and more or less of palate destroyer. Fun to drink? Yes.

12oz can served chilled into a shaker pint glass.

E3 is a very hazy yellow-orange color and semi-opaque because of all of the hop pollen. It has a thin layer of white head and leaves nice lacing as it settles.

Aroma is very hoppy but maybe not triple IPA hoppy. Nice grapefruit and other citrus along with that signature simcoe character.

Flavor is sweet up front leading to massive hop flavor and a big hit of bitterness. Again, maybe not triple IPA hoppy but, then again, maybe it's just a bit better balanced than I expected. It has a huge malt bill that lends sweetness and body and also helps to mellow out the bushels of hops that were likely used.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a low carbonation level which works well with the high alcohol. Definately a song beer but never hot.

Overall an impressive large IPA. To what degree may be a matter of opinion.

A: Pours a lightly hazy golden apricot with some light amounts of gentle visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and some burnt orange + golden yellow highlights. The beer has a two finger tall foamy light beige head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of tropical/mango, tropical/pineapple, and citrus/grapefruit along with moderate aromas of sweet malts with notes of caramel + honey.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of sweet malts with notes of caramel + honey sweetness. That is followed by moderate to strong flavors of tropical/mango, tropical/pineapple, and citrus/grapefruit along with some lighter flavors of honeydew melon. Light amounts of bitterness balance out the sweetness.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light notes of alcohol warming in finish.

O: First off, thanks to my brother-in-law for grabbing me one of these when he was in Denver...it was a nice surprise. I enjoyed this beer though it was a little more on the sweet side than I prefer my DIPAs but it has some really great hop aromas and flavors.

Yep, you guessed it. This beer was given to me by the previous reviewer, woodychandler. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a cloudy golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of hops, citrus, some malts. Taste is bitter up front, followed by a good malt balance, some citrus, alcohol is well hidden. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall be careful with this one, it is way to smooth and drinkable for 11% abv.
