On tap at the pub – Long Beach, CA
Notes taken from 06/03/14 – Taster from flight

A: Looks coffee black. More of a super dark brown that starts to redden towards the edge. A thin film of dark khaki cream settles out to a crown within a few moments. Light streaks and dots of stick remain to the glass.

S: High roast premium malt aromas give suggestion of lightly roasted coffee with milk chocolate and a touch of smoky char. The nose is quite roasty actually with lots of Roast Barley presence. Has some earthy mineral qualities to it as well. Really nice with good coffee and chocolate malt aromatics.

T: Roasted Barley is flaunted bringing lots of yummy roast goodness here. Light bitter and milk chocolates meet with Espresso notes and some earthy green hops underneath. The beer has a lower hop bitterness to it which balances with some of the sharpness from all that roast character. Not much in alcohol flavor coming through. Has a bit of toasted bread crust there with a distinct smoky charcoal to it on the finish. A light chalky bitterness sprinkled throughout. Not unlike Cocoa powder I would say. All in all, a pretty well done stout that boasts the Roast Barley character while keeping good equilibrium overall.

M: Very frothy feel with only a moderate heft in body. Very creamy on the tongue with a light drying at the finish. A touch chalky at times from the roast astringency and dryness factor. Pretty clean and crisp in the end.

D: This is an above average Stout in that it is well made and easy to drink. A touch heavy handed on the Roast Barley for my tastes but still quite enjoyable. Worth checking out although I much preferred the Onyx Stout over this one. (1,690 characters)

A - Nice creamy head and coffee black appearance

S - Light on the nose, hides the alcohol well. Definitely some coffee and chocolate notes

T - Delicious coffee and chocolate notes. As mentioned, this beer hides its alcohol extremely well. A growler of this will not last long in the fridge

M - Rich and creamy with a lingering coffee taste. Definitely a lot going on, but well balanced

O - Wow! One of the best stouts I've had. Approaches, but doesn't quite equal Class V. Using that as a measuring stick, this one holds its own (532 characters)

On-tap at Beachwood Brewing

A: The pour is dark brown in color with a fluffy off-white head.

S: Starts off with burnt sugar, licorice, and molasses. A nice coffee and roast aroma and a slight char. There's a bit of espresso and a subtle sweetness of toffee.

T: Moderately bitter with lots if roast, coffee, and espresso. Some licorice and burnt sugar with a moderate sweetness of toffee and caramel. A light earthiness is present on the back end.

M: Medium in body with a smooth carbonation.

O: Probably my favorite of the beers available on the opening day. (573 characters)
