In tap at the brewpub

A-golden yellow with a white whispy head that quickly disapates

S-moslty the belgian yeast comes through

T- although this beer claims to have a bunch of hops, none shine though and all I get is the Belgian yeast. Not as bad as others, but couls be better

M-so smooth, lawnmower Beer for sure

O-nice attempt at the style but hops just aren't there...

On tap at Stone Brew

11-05-11 – Bitter Saturday
*16oz tulip

Had to order this one for its namesake alone!

A: Hoppa Smurf pours a super light and clear burnished gold color. Topped with a two finger whip of white head that held nicely and left interval tracks of lace down the glass.

S: Smell is real earthy with an herbal spice. Oaky almost. More so like wet tree root. Quite unique and a bit unexpected.

T: Taste is crazy weird as well. Has a sharp almost smoky herbal spice and wood flavor to it. Real pungently earthy. Definitely an IPA with a twist. I thought perhaps a certain hop varietal I am not too familiar with like Pride of Ringwood hops from AU or something that would give a real earthy, wood, and herbal flavor. But I guess that is not it. A slight sweetness with malts nearly nonexistent as well as any alcohol flavs. Good residual bitterness. Has a grapevine – champagne like component to it. Likely from the Nelsons. Don't get a whole lot of Belgian yeast spice character at all. Crazy. Kind of all over the place. Not terrible but not exactly pleasant for me I’d have to say.

M: Mouthfeel is pretty creamy in texture. Def. lighter in overall body with a somewhat watery feel. Nice dry and crisp lift towards the end.

D: Flavor profile aside this is a well crafted IPA with a nice light malt presence and good balance. Lighter bodied with decent carbonation. On any other occasion this would be very drinkable I think but this was definitely the real wild card for the day I would have to say.

Probably wouldn’t order again but quite the experience to have tried. Just too much going on here. Didnt really come together for me.

On-tap at Beachwood Brewing

Pours a clear golden color. The nose starts with sweet malt and spicy phenols, maybe a bit of fruity esters in there too. Light citrus peel and floral hops are also present. The flavor also features sweet malt along with predominantly floral hops, which are also lightly earthy and provide a bit of citrus peel. Medium body with medium to high carbonation.

On tap at Stone.

A: Yellow orange with two fingers of dense white foam.

S: Floral notes accompany tangerine, grass, peach, and orange. I get some nectarine, as well as pine. Malt is faint and bready. The hops are bright and fresh.

T: Moderately bitter with evident alcohol. Lots of orange and grapefruit, with notes of pith and rind. Belgian yeast character is light. Alcohol is strong in the finish. It tastes like 9% instead of the actual 7%.

M: Medium body with low carbonation. The mouthfeel strikes me as a bit thin, and the carbonation is a little low.

Overall: A solid effort, but not my favorite of the Beachwood hoppy beers.
