Served in a thistle (niiice).

Dark brown/amber hue. Finger of off white head. Great lacing and retention.

Super nice caramelized brown sugar and toffee nose. Touch of resin and alcohol.

Taste follows smell. The caramelization is eepic. Nice hop and alcohol bite on the end as well.

Mouthfeel is huge, chewy, touch hot.

Pretty kick ass scotch ale.

Appearance - Dark reddish- brown color with a modest light beige head that slowly faded.

Smell Faint toffee-like aromas, with some raisins and bready notes.

Taste - Toffee and raisin-like malty notes typical of the style with a malty finish. At certain times when I was drinking this I got some root beer-like notes.

Mouth-feel -On the light side of medium- body with a moderate level of carbonation.

Overall - Decent Scotch ale from Beachwood.

Review from notes taken 7/14/13

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this beer

Appearance: Deep brown , with some garnet highlights - light tan, nicely creamy head - leaves some nice streaks of lacing

Smell: Very malty, with a lot of residual sugars - cooked, caramelized malts - caramel and toffee - touch of roast, smoke, and dirt - very sweet, sweeter than I would expect, even given the style - some dark fruits

Taste: Cooked, caramelized , very malty - sweet, sugary - a touch of smoke, roast, maybe some peat (might be imagining it) - minimal bitterness - some brown-ale like malts - some noticeable booze and sugary jelly

Mouthfeel: On the full side of medium, smooth, nicely carbonated, some residual sugar on the finish

Overall: I bet you could suck a malt ball through a garden hose!

So, so malty and sweet. This was probably not an ideal beer for a boiling hot summer day. Overall, not enough roastiness, way too much sweetness. Worth a try, but maybe this is worth sitting on for a few years.

On-tap at Beachwood Brewing

Pours a clear amber color with a finger of off-white head. Sweet and malty, rather substantial. Not terribly complex, but a nice nose. There is a bit of dark fruit character to it, maybe a hint of peat. The flavor is similarly simple, but enjoyable regardless. A solid flavor of caramel and toffee with a hint of earthy hops and peat. Sweet dark fruit notes are also there. Medium to full bodied with medium carbonation.

Picked up a bottle at my favourite SoCal beer store for $12.00 - less because I like Beachwood BBQ's beers and more because I love a good Wee Heavy. Haven't been impressed with Beachwood's house beers but I'm hoping this changes my mind. 9.2% ABV according to my bottle, not 9.5% as currently listed. 1 pint 6 fl oz brown glass bottle with waxed-over pressure cap served into a Uinta pilsner glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are average.

Served straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a two finger khaki colour head of nice soft cream, nice thickness, and great (6+ minute) retention for the high ABV. Body colour is a rich dark auburn. Transparent and quasitranslucent. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. It's too dark for vibrance, but the richness and colour are gorgeous. Good for the style; I'm looking forward to trying it.

Sm: Lovely toasted malt and toffee. Brown sugar. Caramel. Hazelnut. Unrefined sugar. Dark spice. Dark malts. That's quite appealing. Not quite in line with the great wee heavy style beers I've had before, but evocative and inviting. No yeast or alcohol comes through. An above average to moderate strength aroma.

T: Brown sugar, toffee, and caramel. A bit creamy in the third act. Sugary sweetness on the climax - it gets a bit too sweet, actually. The toasted malt character doesn't come through much at all. No yeast character. Maybe some alcohol. I'm pretty disappointed; this is quite simple. Imbalanced. Doesn't feel cohesively built. Generic floral hop character. Doesn't hit the notes a good wee heavy needs to. I'm underwhelmed; this is so disappointingly simple and unrefined. The brown sugar is too prominent. Too sugary overall.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Overcarbonated. Decent thickness. Good body. It complements the flavour profile in a general sense, but by no means feels custom tailored to it. Nothing unique or special here.

Dr: Drinkable but lackluster for the style. A good wee heavy is so much more than this; there's just so little focus and balance here. A disappointment from Beachwood, and an overpriced one at that. I'll think twice before buying another of their beers; this is decent but not great. Not recommended.

Handsome color in the Brewery Vivant snifter, kind of an auburn or copper. Not much head to start, but a quick swirl of the glass releases some thin foam. Interesting aroma of smoke and peat. Malty and thick bodied. Quite sweet and only the smokey taste to dry this out. The bitterness of something burnt and maybe some hops take over before long.

A very strange flavor that is tangy and sharpish, but big on the butterscotch. Are there wood ashes in this? I struggle to find words to describe this stuff. The ending is distinctly bitter and woody. Actually this is fairly drinkable, as odd as it is. I have to give it some points for audacity. From the 22 oz bottle, audaciously priced at $14 from Bine & Vine.

Thanks to beachstrength49 for the bottle. Split with angrybabboon.

Appearance: Hazed and ruddy copper. Rich brick red under direct light. Head is khaki and creamy. Moderate retention. No lacing. Pretty standard affair.

Smell: Malt sweetness. Caramel, biscuit, and some toffee. Dark fruity with grape and apple. Toasted and bready. Did I say toasted, yeah. Grape jelly. Some alcohol on the back. A bit of smoke and some peat (but this might be in my mind). Cooked and caramlized malts, super bready and sweet. Dirty with some roasted elements. Vague dark fruit.

Taste: Nicely toasted. Sweet and malty. Some apple with a copious amount of grape jelly. Slight roasted element. Grassy with some smoky elements in the back. Super cooked and caramelized malts. Super sugary without being cloyingly sweet. Sugary jelly. A touch of ripe apple. Very minimal hopping, a hint of citrus. It's all malt, as to be expected.

Mouthfeel: Creamy with a medium pushing full body. Moderate carbonation with a surprisingly clean finish.

Overall: While trying to tear of my head, it got halfway there and gave up.

It's a good take on the style, but it's ultimately too sweet. The malts just didn't pan out in the long run.

On tap at Strong Ale 2011.

A: Reddish brown with nice clarity and a finger of tan foam. Very nice color.

S: Lots of caramel and earthy notes with a little dark toffee. Smoke is light. Esters remind me of plum and raisin.

T: Pronounced caramel with notes of sugar, a touch of toffee, and a light bitterness. Bread blends with biscuit and earth. Plum is evident. The finish is smooth with notable warming on the palate.

M: Upper medium body with high carbonation. The mouthfeel is smooth and sticky.

Overall: A very good Strong Scotch that's begging to be put into barrel.

This is typically not a style I drink but I don't believe it's a style most drink.

I don't know why they call it a Wee Heavy - It's WAAAY Heavy. It's called Full Malted Jacket for a reason and I learned why after the first mouth filling sip.

Round caramel flavors and not as boozy as you would think for a brew this alcoholic.

I enjoyed this beer a lot but only drank some of it. My man had a Hop Ninja and it was so good I just ordered one of those and forgot all about this malt monster.

On tap at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.

Pours a clear dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, toffee, and brown sugar. Taste is much the same with a mild hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some solid aromas and flavors that make it easy to drink.
