Picked up a filled to the brim 64 oz growler of this yesterday, 4/28/12.

A: Crystal clear golden hued IPA. Smallish off-white head that leaves a trace of lacing in the pint glass as the liquid goes down the gullet.

S: Citra-centric aromas, i.e. heavy citrus and mango with some coniferous wafts mixed in.

T: Uniquely hoppy flavors begin their assault on the palate. The bitterness is somewhat offset by the malt backbone. A pleasure to quaff...slowly.

M: This is where Citraholic really excels: it finishes smooth and clean and the carbonation is perfect, less than 24 hours (or 1440 minutes as stated on the growler) after filled. On the website, it says it's double dry-hopped. You can tell.

O: I've tried the Melrose IPA and that was a more classic West Coast-style IPA. While I personally preferred that, Citraholic is unique, and a pleasure to quaff and savor. This IPA is a tribute to the diversity and beauty of hops.

Beachwood BBQ makes amazing beers, has the best of guest beer and pub food that puts other places to shame. If you live in Long Beach or Seal Beach: Congratulations!

On tap at Far Bar in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a murky yellow with a foamy bone colored head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, citrus zest, and some slight tropical fruit aromas. Taste is much the same but the tropical fruit aromas don't come across in the taste. There is a medium hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

On-tap at Beachwood Brewing

Pours a pale golden color with a white head. Opens up with a solid grapefruit and citrus aroma along with plenty of pine. A mild bread note, maybe some floral qualities, too. The flavor has a decent bitterness and pine flavor, but the citrus and floral notes are not quite as intense. A bit of bread/malt sweetness in there as well.

On-tap at Beachwood I,

A: Pours gold with a medium white head, leaves excellent true lace. Very nice head retention as well.

S: Mango and grapefruit, not as aromatic as I thought'd it be, but a nice fragrance.

T: White grapefruit and mango, lemon zest. Definitely Citra, it's that flavour, a bit one-dimensional overall. Very limited malt flavour. Big hop notes, full-flavoured brew.

M: Soft carbonation, medium-bodied, dry and easy drinking.

O: A nice IPA, not wowing, but a drinkable good pint. Big Citra fans will certainly enjoy this.

4/22/2012

On tap at Beachwood Long Beach. Very pleased to see this on tap as it was in the "coming soon" section of the site this morning. Nice surprise.

A: Bright yellow gold with an inch of soapy white froth. Great color and clarity. Nice retention and thick sheets of lacing.

S: Bright tropical aromatics are redolent of mango, passion fruit, and pineapple. The citrus presence is vibrant and effulgent. Notes of orange, tangerine, and grapefruit waft from the glass with the slightest disturbance. Malt is not evident. Outstanding. Reminds me a bit of Sculpin in its prime.

T: Smooth upper moderate bitterness up front (and throughout) with a fruit explosion. Orange blends with mango, gooseberry, tangerine, and grapefruit. There's a shadow of malt that lends some saltine cracker. No alcohol is evident. The finish is very dry and very clean with much hop fruitiness.

M: Lower medium body with upper moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is crisp, sticky, and very dry.

Overall: A killer IPA. Really bright, fresh, and dry with big tropical and citrus notes. Probably my favorite Beachwood beer yet.
