On-tap at the source, on to the beer:

This brown ale has the color of amber brown, topped with a half-inch of head, leaving lots of white spots around the glass. The aroma hits you with a punch, especially with the nuttiness aspect. More specifically, the aromas od toasted chestnuts, caramel, toffee, and a whisper of squeezed citrus make an aroma that is dreamy.

The taste must have heard how much I adored the aroma of James. It has kicked up its end with a flavor that is nutty galore! Hazelnut and then some, succulent toffee crisp, a lining of herbal hops which keep the lovely sweet flavor at check. It's a medium bodied beer, but with a certain sturdiness. Despite that, this brown ale is very easy drinking.

Like James Brown, I feel good! Simply put, one of the best brown ales that I have come across.

On-tap at Beachwood Brewing

Brown in color with an off-white head. Bread and toffee maltiness up front with a surprising hoppiness (mostly floral and earthy in nature). There is a touch of roast and a bit of coffee, too. The flavor is lightly bitter with a lot of toasted bread, toffee, and mild caramel. Some coffee and roasted malt in there and a light nuttiness.

On tap at The Surly Goat in West Hollywood, CA.

Pours a clear dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, and some nutty aromas. Taste is much the same but slightly watery flavor wise. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but it's somewhat thin and needs better carbonation in my opinion.

Draft to Pint

@Toronado SD

App- A small medium colored brown pour with a semi dense center. A bit darker here but a little light for me. A small 1/2 finger of light khaki head formed and was good. Had a mild/medium amount of cling.

Smell- A small roast. Seemed like they took a brown ale and added a bit too much bittering hops or the addition of some coffee beans. A little too prickly.

Taste- A large amount of coffee bitter on this one. A only semi-malty biscuity flavor was there. Seemed to be a bit light on balance.

Mouth- A lighter medium body with a light medium carbonation. Residual biscuit malts with a rough bitter flavor.

Drink- Was just eh for me. Had to get one since I was in Toronado and hell James is on tap and since I missed it at Ode to Lambic.

On-tap at Beachwood I,

A: Pours umber with a medium off-white head with very good retention which leaves nice lace.

S: Toast, biscuity malt, some hop character.

T: Biacuit malt, hints of brown sugar, some citrus. Quite well attenuated for the style.

M: Cloying a bit on the back end, the little bit of resiudal sugar there does it. Medium-bodied, frothy, not as clean as I'd like and a little too dry.

O: A solid brown, but never something I really got into.

On tap at Beachwood Long Beach.

A: Dark brown with a slight reddish tinge and a finger of beige foam.

S: Toasted bread with chocolate and earth. Hops impart light orange notes. I get some caramel as well.

T: Baked bread accompanies light caramel notes and some earth. There's a lower moderate bitterness with subtle orange and grapefruit notes providing complexity. I get a little chocolate as well.

M: Medium body with matching carbonation. The mouthfeel is sticky and smooth.

Overall: A damn good hoppy American Brown.
