Notes/Commercial Description:
From a brewery not so far, far away comes Hop Vader, a full-blown west coast hop experience that walks on the dark side. Hop Vader is a black IPA that's fully saturated with Pacific Northwest hops for a citrusy strike. A Jedi mind trick using German black malt give this beer a dark hue with subtle roasty notes. A Death Star-sized dry hop charge using Simcoe & Columbus leaves a dank aroma that would challenge even Master Yoda. Is your organoleptic light saber ready?

The beer comes in a dark brown color with a light white tan head.

The aroma has lots of toasted malt, roasted malt, caramel sweetness, chocolate, and then some piney hops.

The flavor follows with that stout character of lots of bittersweet chocolate and some coffee. The back end has a deep earthy bitterness, almost like black tea on the finish.

The mouthfeel is medium.

This a pretty good black IPA. A good combination of sweetness and then some brutal bitter notes on the back.

From 06/23/13 notes. Had an 8 oz. pour of this on tap at TØRST in Brooklyn, NY. Listed as a
Sorachi Ace saison on the menu.

a - Pours a dark mahogany brown color with one inch of light tan, creamy looking head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of pine hops, roasted malts, light citrus hops, mint, toasted malts, and chocolate. Nice nose; lots of pine hops and a nice mix of hops and roasted qualities.

t - Tastes of of roasted malts, chocolate, super bitter pine hops, burnt malts, light cofee, and toasted malts. Taste has less hops than the nose but is a bit bitter, especially int he aftertaste. Nice, but doesn't flow together as nicely as the nose does.

m - Medium body and low to moderate carbonation, with a bitter bite at the end,

o - Overall a nice black IPA. The nose i very good with a nice mix of hops and roasted malts, whereas the taste has more bitter chocolate, and doesn't meld as well. Worth checking out if you like the style, though not my favorite black IPA.

On-tap at Beachwood Brewing

Dark brown in color with a tan head. Slight sweetness on the nose, mostly bread with a touch of toffee and chocolate. Quite a nice citrus hoppiness, plenty of pine, and a prevalent grapefruit aroma. The flavor is nicely sweet without any bitterness from the roast. A touch of hop bitterness is there, but a good fruity hop flavor (mostly citrus). This is a little more chocolatey than I like my black IPAs, but the flavor is quite good overall.

On tap for the 1st Anniversary Party (7/7/12).
Reviewed from notes.

A: Pours black with a fine off-white head which leaves picture puzzle lace.

N: Roasty, dank and herbal, floral with some citrus.

T: Roasty and hoppy bitterness up front followed by resiny and oily. Finishes bitter with a lingering roast.

M: Medium body and carbonation. Plenty of sticky and slick hop oils.

O: Pretty good for a villain.

7/12/2012

On tap at Toronado for Beachwood Brewing's one year anniversary.

A: Appears a brown so dark it's near black. There's a deep red tinge near the edges of the glass and an inch of beige froth.

S: Grapefruit flesh and rind with prominent orange flesh notes and a dash of spiciness. Perfumy floral aromatics are apparent. Pine resin is pronounced and dank. Malt is lightly roasted with just a dash of chocolate.

T: Pine resin blends with bright citrus flesh characteristics: juicy orange, tangerine, and grapefruit. An upper moderate dry bitterness is evident throughout, devoid of harshness and astringency. Malt imparts restrained chocolate notes and a soft roasted presence. The drying finish showcases a final citrus flourish.

M: Medium body with upper medium carbonation. Sticky and dry mouthfeel.

Overall: A well executed Long Beachean IPA.

On tap at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.

Pours a clear super dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of roasty malt, citrus zest, and herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is easy to drink but not as roasty as other beers of the same style I have tried in the past.
