The Beers of California

#40

Bottled Date: 3/26/12

A: Deep burgundy brown with two fingers of khaki foam which sticks around for a while.

S: Strawberry jam, caramel, brown sugar along with a nice earthiness and fresh pine needles.

T: Strong sweetness which follows the nose: strawberry syrup, caramel, and brown sugar. There are moments of fresh, pine, and earthy bitterness that attempts to balance the brew but overall the brew favors sweetness with a strong phenolic quality, that, intertwined with the strawberry syrup, is reminiscent of cough medicine.

M: Medium bodied with a decent amount of carbonation and syrupy linger.

O: This beer was a bit of let down being overly sweet with overbearing phenolic notes that were reminiscent of childhood illness and unpleasant cough syrup experiences. Was not mindful of the bottle date when picking this up and will try and get a fresher bottle and revisit this brew in the future. (935 characters)

Pours a deep reddish tinged brown with a sticky tightly formed half finger beige head atop, just rich looking. The aromas just don't jump out like I was hoping,I get some earthiness and faint resin. What a great creamy feel wich I really was taken back by.Malt driven up front with some caramel and brown sugar notes before earthy and more of a leafy hopped finish, not a big left coast citric red.Wow this beer is all over the place...in a pretty good way,it looks and feels great and the flavors are not typical. (510 characters)

L: Brilliant deep amber brown with a 1” cream to tan colored foam collar that hugs the side of the glass.
S: Malty nose with traces of caramel and chocolate.
T: Strats with rich malts and light caramel supported by traces of chocolate and light espresso finishing with a citrus rind coffee-like bitterness on the end.
F: Creamy smooth with medium carbonation and medium to medium full body.
O: A full flavored red ale with an assertive hop finish. (453 characters)

22oz bottle. Who is this an 'evil twin' to, one might wonder?

This beer pours a clear, dark red-brick amber colour, with three fat fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly tan head, which leaves some spooky, howling ghost-esque cobwebbed lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of mildly dank pine resin, bitter white grapefruit and underripe orange pith, grainy caramel malt, muddled dark orchard fruit, brown sugar, ethereal wet ash, and further leafy, earthy hops. The taste is semi-sweet bready, lightly roasted caramel malt, forest floor pine acridity, more mixed citrus bitterness, a touch of damp stone path, and plain leafy, earthy hops coming 'round the back.

The bubbles are mostly kept under lock and check, barely registering on the ol' frothometer, the body a solid medium weight, and verging on heavy, with an attendant smoothness, one that has a few wrinkles to iron out. It finishes off-dry, and not as sweet as I was expecting, the hops and so far unremarked-upon alcohol doing well to create a semblance of balance.

A properly hoppy, and elevated American red ale, is all I can really relate about Evil Twin, in summary. No off-flavours (a common affliction for the style, sadly), as the near 7 points of booze slowly seep into my pleasure centers, at just the right time, winter making its seasonally unwelcome return today. (1,370 characters)

On Tap at the Brewery

A - Dark reddish/brown with an one-finger tan/beige head. The head takes a bit of time to diminish leaving long lasting streaky-white lacing down the entire glass.

S - Plenty going on here - Toasty/yeasty malt with hints of grapefruit, pine, and dark caramel. There are also some earthy notes in there that I couldn't quite put my finger on.

T - Sweet and dark caramel malt right off the bat. The taste finishes with just a touch of hop bitterness to round things off and make you want another sip. Very balanced with no one taste taking the lead.

M - Medium carbonation and body. Full flavor but this beer does not feel heavy in any way.

O - This is fast becoming one of my favorite Red Ales. Well crafted and everything is nicely balanced. And the bonus is that the brewery is about 20+ minutes away. (830 characters)

Reddish brown with a thick off-white head of solid retention. Nose is caramel and piney hops with hints of cat piss. Odd blend of mildly faded hops and caramel malt. Taste is a bit similar in its mildness, but bitterness kicks in quickly after initial caramel with a piney resinous finish if fairly muted. Body is medium. (328 characters)

Pours two fingers of head on a clear dark straw colored body.
The aroma is rich grapefruit and lemon with some brown sugar in the background.
The taste starts with big lemon bitterness, but the (slightly caramel) malt quickly tames it. Great balance.
The texture is softer.
Great profile. (288 characters)
