This hopped up red ale comes from Heretic which is a newer brewery from Pittsburgh, California and they make some serious brews. Evil Twin pours a really dark amber color with lots of ruby and garnet hints, really sexy color. A nice finger of foamy head sits atop that leaves some great lacing and has a nice layer of thick film on the top of the glass throughout the session. Hops pour out in the nose, really strong resinous pine notes and subtle citrus mix with some rye-like spicing and a strong malt presence. The flavors are really bold and aggressive. Big hops right off the bat bring forth big pine flavors, nice big malty flavors come forward as well with hints of caramel and toffee, rounded with some citrusy sweetness. It has a nice big body, but unfortunately has a bit of an acidic feel at times that wasn’t pleasant, but it wasn’t always apparent thankfully.
Verdict: This is a really solid red ale. Big hops, bold flavors, aggressive but still approachable and really pleasant.

On Tap at the Brewery
A - Dark reddish/brown with an one-finger tan/beige head. The head takes a bit of time to diminish leaving long lasting streaky-white lacing down the entire glass.
S - Plenty going on here - Toasty/yeasty malt with hints of grapefruit, pine, and dark caramel. There are also some earthy notes in there that I couldn't quite put my finger on.
T - Sweet and dark caramel malt right off the bat. The taste finishes with just a touch of hop bitterness to round things off and make you want another sip. Very balanced with no one taste taking the lead.
M - Medium carbonation and body. Full flavor but this beer does not feel heavy in any way.
O - This is fast becoming one of my favorite Red Ales. Well crafted and everything is nicely balanced. And the bonus is that the brewery is about 20+ minutes away.

On tap at Field Of Drafts held at The Hanger in Lancaster, CA.
Pours a hazy dark orange with a foamy orange-tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a citrus forward hop presence that is slightly better in the smell.
