Heretic Brewing Co. "Evil Cousin"
12 fl. oz. can, "CANNED 02/03/16 1312"
$2.85 @ The Beer Shoppe, Ardmore, PA

Notes: Hazy golden body beneath an average-sized head of creamy bright white. OK head retention and lacing. Aroma of hops at pouring: pungent, piney, citrusy. Some sweetish malt. Somewhat floral as well. Oddly it doesn't really increase once raised to the nose. It's smooth, nothing really pops out at you. Flavor: Sweetish golden malt topped by gently raspy pine and smeared with citrus/tropical fruit (tangerine, guava, grapefruit). Medium bodied pushing towards becoming medium-full but never getting there. Fine bubbled median carbonation leaves it smooth. Some alcohol starts to show about halfway in (surprising at just 8% ABV). Bitter but not overly so or harsh as some double IPAs can be; probably in the 80-90 range although it's hard to tell with so much malt going on. Dry finish though, with a spritz of alcohol and piney, minty and herbal hops lingering.

Thanks Kevin for gifting me a can of this.

A- Can falls into a tulip with a crystal clear golden body and a thick creamy white crown. The head shoots up just over two fingers high with good retention. Lacing is extremely plentiful with sheets all around the glass after each sip.

S- Mostly hops off of the top with just a bit of medium crystal sweet malts in the background. The hops gravitate toward citrus with orange and grapefruit notes followed up by floral and piney tones. Just a tiny hint of tropical fruits.

T- Emulates what is found the aroma quite well but for me some more details open up with a dank herbal weed presence playing off the citrus fruits. Ruby red grapefruit becomes the dominant factor with bitter orange, tangerine, slight mango, floral and resinous pine beyond that. A pinch of sweetness and caramelized sugars but nothing to interrupt the hops noticeably.

MF- Creamy, somewhat chewy, medium body with high end puffy carbonation. Smoothed out by the texture mentioned and a clean bitterness lingers throughout.

The aroma did not have me that excited with a general citrus presence but things open up quite a bit with herbal dankness and more pronounced hop complexity coming out. Citrus meets dank and pine and this one drinks much less than its ABV.

The preponderance of beer in CANs is/has been spiraling out of CANtrol! I am leading The CANQuest (tm) & I CAN't keep up! I am ecstatic that they have begun CANning this one & Evil Twin & I was happy to pick up one of each recently at The Fridge.

From the CAN: "Drink with me Cousin, as Hades comes with the dawn. - Acacius"; "Always brewed and packaged only by Heretic Brewing Co. - Fairfield, CA"; "Almost everybody has their favorite cousin. Ours is a resiny citrus and pine joy with an easy drinking malt character. We love hanging out with our cousin at the beach, camping, hiking and every holiday party. Why not welcome our cousin to your next family gathering?"; "Don't follow the crowd. Be a Heretic and drink responsibly."

More broken record action. One of my first Cousins is Colby Chandler of Ballast Point, my late Pops' late-brother's son. It was at a family gathering in early-Spring 2002 that I got to taste Sculpin in beta. Now, the question is: Am I his Evil Cousin, vice versa, or are we both Evil Cousins?

The Crack! was evil in its intensity, so I was gentle in my Glug so as to keep things on an Even Keel (sorry, different beer, different brewery. I wonder what made me think of that ...). It's a Cousin thing, yinz wouldn't understand. Once decanted, an in-glass swirl raised a finger of foamy, fizzy, tawny head with moderate retention. Color was a gorgeous Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5) with NE-quality clarity, prompting the Gelt Gang of Midas, Croesus & Mammon to come in from the living room, where they were watching playov hockey on tellly, for a taste. Nose smelled like I was chopping down a pine tree for my living room, or better yet, since it is spring, running the spent trees through a chopper for mulch. Whee! Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, big for the style. The taste was initially cool and minty, like a Calm Before the Storm. Suddenly, the the grapefruit citrus & fusel alcohol began to assert themselves & my poor, bruised tongue cringed in abject terror. This was an Evil beer and I felt ready to Abandon Ship. Fortunately, it passed and I found myself back on an Even Keel. Finish was dry, but minty, and I actually felt fresher for having sucked it down than I did before I started. Summer cooler, here it comes!

Can. Hardo can for the record. Pours clearer than many and paler than many. Aroma is obviously a sugar bomb. Fruity hops and an aromatic sugary scent. I generally don't take well to these candied IPAs. Yeah the flavor is violently sweet. Hoppy melon flavor. I'm finding that this interpretation of the IPA/DIPA is becoming more prevalent. Not my speed. Hot, sweet, and shallow.

Hazy deep gold with three fingers of white head that lasts. As the liquid level drops the lacing left on the sides of the glass are very dense.
The smell is pine and grapefruit zest.
Taste is hop oil resinous mild grapefruit and bready malts. The hops lean toward dank as it warms but never too much.
Mouthfeel is somewhat thin for a double IPA and it has lots of carbonation. Finish is medium dry and bitter.
Overall a fine DIPA for the fairly low abv. of 8.0%. Good job folks!
From a 12 ounce can that I paid $1.67 for. And there is a canned on date of 12/11/2015. That is only about six weeks old. Yes I will have this again!

Poured from 22 oz bottle into tulip. Date on bottle has rubbed off and is unreadable.

L- pours a clear dark yellow/ orange with 2 fingers of thick white head. Leaving some good lacing and a white cap floating on top the beer.

A- strong tropical notes, citrus, grapefruit and pine

T- follows nose and a stronger grapefruit taste and not overpowering bitterness.

M- average mouthfeel maybe a little more bodies than most, strong carbonation.

O- a very solid beer, the ABV is lower than I'd expect for a double. I'd definitely buy again if the price was right.

This beer sounded good going into the glass, but the head and body were a little thin. Taste is pleasantly hoppy and I bet this would do better in the can than the bomber I had. Crystal clear golden color and a nice nose, but there's a structure that isn't quite all there for a dipa.

A: clear amber slightly orange
S: juicy. Tropical. Mango ripe peach. Orange peel. Guava.
T: tropical piña colada. More guava and very alight mango. Lots of fruits. Bitter on the finish of some pine.
M: crisp. Clean. Subtle bitterness. Juicy.
O: much better than I expected. Not as bitter as resiny as a lot of west coast style DIPA, but that's not a bad things in this particular case. Very drinkable and leaves you wanting another sip with it's juiciness.

I bought a 22oz bottle of this yesterday at the Brattleboro Co-op ($5.99). Enjoying today out in The 'Zebo.

Drinking it from a Sammy pint glass.... It's a light to medium golden color, with plenty of aggressive carbo. Head is snow-white, fluffy and creamy, sitting at 1/4" for the duration and leaving nice lacing. Aroma has a hint of bready malt, but it's mostly piney citrus. Body is medium ; feel decent.... middle of the road all the way.

Taste has some subtle sweetness, with emphasis on subtle. It really is mostly about the hops here. Has a splash of lemon peel and a dash of pineapple. Then throw in a good helping of pithy, rindy grapefruit bitterness. There's a smidge of florality in the finish, which is rather dry. An enjoyable brew, all in all. Prosit!

Crystal clear golden honey colored with three inches of bright white foam that rose up high and lingered long. Had to wait for it to subside. Aroma of citrus hoppiness, some light floral notes. Big and intense grapefruit rind flavors upfront, very bitter, but somewhat one-dimensional. Moderate mouthfeel, even carbonation.

Bomber poured into a Stein. Nice translucent dark golden appearance with moderately thin lacing that pretty much dissolves the head about halfway down. Taste is pineapple grapefruit that sort of takes a back seat to the forward hop bitterness that takes a front seat along for this ride. Has a nice kick as well. I like it.

L: It pours hazy orange amber under a 1” persistent sudsy white foam collar that hugs the side of the glass. The haze is from the hops.
S: Moderate aromas with citrus, grapefruit and some earthiness.
T: The beer starts with caramel rich malt then citrus rind bitterness – especially grapefruit – takes over and passes into the finish lingering through the aftertaste. As much hop flavor as bitterness with both coming in at slightly above moderate levels. The bitterness is assertive but not harsh and well balanced by the malt with lemon, grapefruit and melon notes.
F: Very creamy and smooth with a medium to medium full body and a slightly below medium body.
O: A big flavored, well balanced beer.

This pours a golden tan color. I get a grassy resiny aroma, with a taste of grassy straw with a crisp orange kiss of bitterness. Dry finish.

It's all right by me.

(Draft revisited, Handles, Pleasanton CA) Fruity smell, nice thick head, starts sweet finishes bitter, smell gets a bit "danky" with time, representative for the style. Much better this time around.

Never noticed this before so thought I'd give it a shot. No bottle date but I assume it's fresh. Smells dank and citrusy, reminds me of enjoy by. Taste follows with huge fresh hop flavors, dank hits hard and pretty bitter. But followed by citrus, lemon, grapefruit and pine everything I want in a IIPA. Malt not really noticeable. Nice medium body. Overall great beer from Heretic. For the price (I think it was 5.99) I would take this over enjoy by, sorry stone but this tastes very similar Imo and about 3$ cheaper.

Nice golden orange color with eggshell white head. Good lacing. Great flavors come through to make this beer very drinkable. Smooth on the palate while delivering a great hop profile. First beer I've had from Heretic and greatly pleased.

Bomber > Pint Glass
A - Nice clear gold with a thick two finger foamy white head, beautiful thick lacing.
S - Sweet candied kinda malts, orange, pineapple, hop resins, lemon, grapefruit.
T - This has the west coast punch of hops with the sweetness of an east coast, but it somehow falls between really well. Lots of sweet fruit oily hop goodness.
M - Definitely chewy, and it clings and lingers on your palate forever, lots of bitterness and teeth coating thickness to it.
O - Wonderul aroma and flavor, the malt is a tad intense, and the feel needs some smoothing out, but for my first Heretic beer, I was pleased.

Great Double IPA on tap. I have never tried a bottle. Enjoyed having a driver so I could enjoy my visits to Heretic. Small place but I hope to see it grow. You need a driver or a cab. Nothing near by. Have some CHP for desert after the IPAs.

I got this bottle knowing it was bottled 7 months ago. The malt has taken over. I will review this beer again with a fresher date. Overall it could be worse. I get a slight orange juice feel, and taste.

Poured into a stemless wine glass.

a- transparent orange, almost has a pinkish hue to it, very soft. Thin head gone quick, oily. Spotty lace if at all.

s- sweet piny hop...soft alcoholic citrus.

t/m/o- fairly light bodied, but on the boozy side. Watery pine cone hop flavors. Not sure of the age on the bottle. Ok beer, but in a world of amazing IPAs and IIPAs why drink an ok one?

Hoppy, Citrus, Pine, Cloudy, Dry, Bright. If you are looking for a strong IPA then you should give this a try. I wish it had more nose but the taste makes up for it. It has a light and small white head that doesn't last for long. The first thing you get is the pine, almost a sap flavor which transfers to a bitter citrus taste My burbs kind of taste fruity, like plum or peach which is nice.

Yummy!

I'm always trying new brews. It seems like every brewer makes an IPA (or DIPA or IPA3 or some other hoppy thing) these days and I've had a lot of "good" ones.
This one is a standout, one of the best DIPAs I've had in a while. Hoppy, dank & heady.

Pours out as a cloudy amber orange. Has nice upfront fruity/earthy-dank aromas with a hint of the malts.
The massive hop additions are noticeable in the density of the mouthfeel. Smooth, and almost creamy.

Intense hop forward flavor. Resinous pine, with a bit of fruit . The alcohol is not evident.

A bit too easy drinking for its abv... best not to have too many on hand....
