look: 3.75 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.25 | feel: 3.25 | overall: 3.25
Appearance: Semi-clear red-gold, chunky foam head made of large bubbles that doesn’t stick around too much, but does leave a decent enough of lacing and surface spatters.

Aromatics: Cherries and brown sugar. The sweet malted barley really playing an equal part to the cherries in the aroma dept, with a hint of lemon citrus (I’m guessing from the hops) tickling away the nostrils here and there. Fairly straightforward and simple - very nice!

Taste: Extremely toasty, I could say roasted cherries but I think you could almost get away with calling it smoked cherry - the hops giving the cherries a super smokey earthy vibe. So depending on the flavour attitudes you subscribe to this might be for you. If you are expecting sweet - this is not, so just be forewarned.

Feel: Medium body, light carbonation - most of it disappearing during the pour - so the crisp snap is fairly muted. I do get a whisper of booziness in the entrails as it attempts to finish, but lingers about with a cardboard-like bitter fuzziness, that isn’t all bad, but does overstay its welcome for me.

Overall: Its cherry without the sweet or sour, which is an interesting combination - I’m so use to having a kriek, or cherry sour, or cherry gose, but till now I haven’t had a cherry ale that was more ale than cherry. The cherry providing more of an ambiance in the flavour as opposed to starring as the flavour. The hops selection for me is wrong though, the malts seem adequate and do provide a nice sweet enhancement to the cherry, but not enough to balance out the bitter. And I do have a bit of a problem with their claim on the bottle that this is “exceptionally sessionable”, at 5.5% and with the slightly out of whack malt-hop coordination, and barn wood door aftertaste and linger it doesn’t quite fit as a “sessionable” at all.

Pairing : This was a tough one. I was expecting something sweet, but with the hop forward profile I’m going to throw this one at a well crusted meat… and that said I think I would actually enjoy this a lot with a beef donair/döner (a spit roasted spiced beef) but as a burger on a hamburger bun instead of a pita. And in Canada donair sauce is often the complimenting condiment and is usually made of condensed milk, sugar and garlic and vinegar. Both are needed here - Make sure your donair meat is extra crispy - if you go to the local donair shop and the meat on the spit is not dark dark brown then it just won’t do. It needs to be dark and crispy, and the thinner the better. The spicy beef and sweet sauce combination will fit this beer and will round out the flavours very nicely.
