540 Club is a typical dim and drafty local dive bar in the Geary/Clement area of San Francisco. What makes this bar worth coming to is that they are the only establisment in the area that cares about the quality of beer flowing through the taps. The service is also usually pretty friendly, especially on weeknights. For $5-6 you will be drinking pints of special microbrews from Deschutes and Ballast Point instead of bud light and sierra nevada at the other 10 bars in the area. My only complaint is the odd setup with the smoking patio. For some reason they like to keep the door open at 540 Club even on chilly nights, and with the smokers puffing away right in front of the door you will find yourself with your jacket zipped up and breathing in second hand smoke constantly. That being said, 540 is still my first and last stop in the Clement area for taking a seat and having a good beer.

I’ve heard this place described as a Mission bar in the Richmond, and in shorthand that’s not too far off… minus the crowds, perhaps. It’s a dimly lit locals spot with a small smoking patio, if that’s your thing. I counted 12 beers on tap and 22 bottles, dominated by micros and crafts. Definitely local breweries represented with tap handles from Speakeasy, Iron Springs, Moonlight and Heretic. I enjoyed the chill vibe, even on a weekend night. Only negative: Saw the bartender dip the spigot into the glass while it was filling up, yum! I’ll be back, sooner than I care to admit.
