Consumed May 14th, 2012 at the brewery.

Appearance: clear dark brown. A very fine off-white head.

Roasted, chocolate aroma.

Strong malt flavor: toffee and coffee. Low bitterness on finish. Pretty clean: almost no aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is smooth but a little flat.

I see this won some awards; it's certainly not a bad beer.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is full of chocolate with some lightly roasted malt and some cream notes. There is also a little bit of hazelnut character in the aroma. The flavor is a strong mix of cocoa and milk chocolate, with some roasted malt. Once again there are some hazelnut notes. There is also a little bit of earthyness from the hops in the flavor. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A - Dark, almost opaque amber-brown body with an off-white head that dissipates fairly quickly considering its genre.

S - Sweet: mostly raisins with some dark chocolate, mocha and plum.

T - Nice light mocha aftertaste that doesn't linger too long. Slightly dry on the finish. Plenty of creamy coffee and nutty flavor throughout.

M - Nice. Slightly spritey but with enough creaminess to balance.

O - I'm glad I finally found an enjoyable beer at this joint.

Appearance - Dark brown body. Small cream colored lacing with plenty of stick.

Smell - Roasted coffee malt. Slightly sweet and nutty.

Taste - Definite creamed, sweetened coffee. Very slight hoppy end gives a touch of bitterness. For the most part is indistinguishable with an iced coffee with a bit of carbonation.

Mouthfeel - Feels a little flat and dead in the mouth. Not bad, but could be better.

Overall Drinkability - Decent porter. No off flavors whatsoever. Just a little safe and bland. No kick or edge to it. Then again, not ever beer needs in your face character, so it works out alright. Works as a light refreshing porter.

A: Pours a dark brown color, nearly black. A one finger beige head forms at first, but quickly recedes to nothing.
S: Big roasted malt and acrid coffee. Not much else.
T: Follows the nose. Tons of burnt and acrid coffee that detracts for me. Some light chocolate flavors as well.
M/D: A medium body and carbonation. Fairly easy to drink. Tone down the acrid flavors and this is great.

Just a bit to much burnt acrid coffee for me. Not bad, but I will grab for something else next time I am at the brewery.

A: Looks to light in the glass brown / dark red highlights. Light brown fades quickly.

S: Mild roasted coffee, toffee sweetness.

T: Good flavor but a little thin. Light roast coffee, toasted nuts, sweet dark bread. Notable hops bitterness kicks in just before finish. Toasted flavor lingers.

M: Smooth up front. Carbonation and dryness on finish.

D: Not as much flavor intensity as I like from a porter but nothing off putting either. I'd go back for this one.

The beer arrived at my table a dark black, with brown highlights on the edges. There was about 1 finger of tan head that stuck around for some time. Lacing is evident.

Aroma is of chocolate and coffee with slight burnt notes. There is a touch of alcohol in the there, that I really appreciate. I'm really big of dark beers having a bit of alcohol in the finish. No hop presence.

Taste is also chocolate, coffee, and burnt flavor. Hop bitterness is present throughout. The bitterness is well-balanced and complements the other flavors nicely. There is no real hop spiciness. The flavor is very nice--definitely a porter to try.

Mouthfeel is a little light for what I like.

This is a full-flavored beer, so not one that you want to have more than a few of. But, for the style it is very drinkable.

Reviewed 12/6/2008 (Tap @ the brewery):

Pours a dark brown color, almost black. Almost no head, but it is creamy white. Coffee aroma, and dark malts. Has a nice drinkable coffee taste. Not burnt, not chocolate, very carbonated. Coffee aftertaste. Very quaffable.

Poured into a pint glass from a growler:

A - Dark brown, almost black, with very minimal tan head, and no lacing.

S - Light coffee and roasted malt aroma.

T - Roasted malts dominate, followed by a decent amount of coffee flavor with a hint of chocolate in the finish. Very light flavor throughout.

M - Very thin bodied for a porter. Light carbonation if any. Smooth finish.

D - Although this brew is very light in taste and mouthfeel, this is still a very enjoyable porter. Considering the location, I found this to be very worthwhile in trying. Recommended.

Updated review 07/20/11 (original score not edited):

Had this on tap at the brewery. The beer still has a light roasted malt/coffee aroma with the flavor resembling the same. The appearance and the body, like the rest of their beers, is where this one if lacking. The appearance is a dark brown but with a thin soda pop head which quickly fades. The body is completely lacking. No medium to heavy body here, only a thin watery light lager mouthfeel. Come on guys, if you got all those awards on the wall for this beer, what happened?

Going by memory on this one as I didn't have internet while in Fredericksburg. I have had better porters than this one but none so smooth. There was very little in the way of roasted flavors but the beer did look like a porter. It was a very dark beer with an off white head.

For the first time in a while they had Not So Dumb Blonde Ale and Enchanted Rock Red Ale on tap at the same time. Usually they only have one or the other. Naturally, I got the porter because I couldn't decide between the other two. I'm glad I couldn't decide.

Appearance: Dark brown, almost black with ruby highlights. Thin offwhite head.

Smell: Roasted malt with coffee notes

Taste: Roasted malts fill the background with just a hint of coffee flavor in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Silky and smooth. Almost creamy.

I've recently rediscovered porters, and this is a nice porter! Simple but elegant, it makes me wonder why I stopped drinking them in the first place.

Appearance: Deep, almost opaque amber color, with a moderate off-white head, and small, broken lace.

Aroma: Rich chocolate and coffee notes dominate the aroma, with an undercurrent of earthy notes as well.

Taste: Opens with a mildly sweet note, soon followed by roasted malts, rich chocolate flavors and lingering earthy notes, and mildly sweet, with very little hop presence.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, and quite full.

Drinkability/notes: A wonderful example of a familiar style, well-made and very drinkable. An excellent choice for a cool fall evening.

Outstanding! One of my favorites on my last trip to F-burg.

Rich and roasty and quite possibly the perfect porter, as it maintained a good balance of the roasted notes with a smooth drinkability that made it very discernibly a porter (instead of a weak stout)

The menu says it is 5.3 ABV.

Pioneer is dark brown, almost black with a creamy, light brown head. Aroma is very roasty with notes of coffee and just a hint of chocolate. Taste starts with a strong roasted malt flavor that is soon joined by notes of coffee and chocolate. A nice sweetness joins midsip and lingers into a long finish. This is just how I like my porters and I have to say this is probably the best of the standard beers available during my visit to Fredericksburg Brewing.

The menu calls Pioneer Porter "English-style" with Willamette and Goldings hops, dark crystal and chocolate malts and roasted barley. It gives up a small, dense, bumpy tan-with-brown-edges head. Lots of spots and tissue-thin sheets of lacing. The beer is dark brown, almost black. Nice chocolate and coffee in the nose with a little smoke. Very pleasant aroma. The beer starts smoky, chocolatey, coffeey. The middle is sweet, fruity, thick and velvety smooth. Great body, but it starts to feel a little oily after a couple of glasses. Nutty finish, quite dry with more coffee and bitter chocolate. Smoky aftertaste. I like this. It's very flavorful, roasty, nutty. The fullness/thickness is great, but makes it more of a finishing beer than a session beer.
