This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Alt beer or “old”beer is a Dusseldorf style, top fermented ale. This Alt beer benefits from a multi temperature mash, a procedure done in the old days to use high quality un-malted barley which helps unlock all the depths of the unique malt flavor. Alts re traditionally fermented at a cooler temperature with German ale yeast. Most of the beers of continental Europe resembled alt beer before the invention of Pilsner beer and today are hard to find except in the Dusseldorf area and by craft brewers. Dorsia was a special brew made for 3 Floyds “Reservations at Dorsia” Dinner to accompany Chef Pat Niebling’s menu. Prosit.

A lesser known German ale style produced by a top notch brewery. Altbiers are supposed to be this big bready refreshing crisp ale. Three floyds hits a homerun. A copper orange brew with a 3 finger head. Aromatic notes of biscuit, bread, slight but of yeast aroma. Taste falls right in line. A bready punch to the tastebuds rounded out by a superb malt flavor. Very glad I had the chance to try this.

On tap at FFF brewpub poured into pint glass. Appearance is clear amber with a few fingers of white head that settles to a single long-lasting finger of cover. Patches of lace line the glass at the finish. Aroma is loaded with malt: bread, caramel, toast, and cereal. A light grassy hop note is there, too. Some mild doughy yeast is tucked in with the malt. Taste follows the aroma, with bready sweetness leading the way. Hints of hay and grass show up with a slight hop bitterness that is a pleasant arrival on the swallow. Medium bodied, a little creamy, average carbonation, crisp, abrupt finish.
