Pours dark brown with no carbonation and a small head. The nose is pure bourbon with lots of vanilla and oak that balances against a dark and roasty stout. The nose has a slight vegetal aspect to it. The beer itself follows the nose with a strong astringent bourbon up front that has loads of vanilla, coffee and dark chocolate. As I describe it, I'd think I'd enjoy this more than I did but it just didn't blend together well. The mouthfeel is smooth with a slight astringency in the finish.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottle #345/522.

Appearance - Black body. Small khaki head. Medium collar.

Smell - Bright wine aroma. White wine. Strong oak. Chocolate. Black patent malt.

Taste - Chocolate, but immediately a sharp wine flavor. Slightly acidic. Oak. The wine flavor lingers. Kinda sweet. Dry winey finish.

Mouthfeel - A little sharp from the wine. Sweet from both beer and wine.

Overall - The wine wipes out the stout flavor and leaves wine. A little too strong for me.

750ml bottle split three ways poured into a Bourbon County snifter at cellar temp 54F.

Dark brown near black pour with a tan creamy head with great retention and moderate lacing.

Smell is roasty and hoppy, the wine barrel presence is nice with a sweetness and white grape aroma. Some dark fruits as well.

Taste is very nice with the base beer shining, roasty malts and strong bitter hops, the wine presence adding a sweetness that the base beer did not otherwise possess, the lack of bourbon takes away an otherwise toffee and vanilla flavor, but replaces with a nice oaky light grape flavor.

Mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, medium to full, not overly sticky, dry finish, great drinkability.

Overall a fantastic brew that will drink best now, worth seeking out especially given the limited availability. Well-done and very dirnkable.

Black with a nice mocha cap that shows some staying power.

Nice powdery cocoa on the nose...smooth and rich. Not sure I detect a wine presence.

Decadent dessert beer...gooey brownies, Again, not sure I'd pull wine, but whatever is here lays a luxurious cover atop the base stout. Loads of flavor, shockingly so. Creamy and fluffy on the palate..a very smooth drinking imperial stout with a unique barrel presence that's original and delicious.

Many of the reviews here seem mediocre and to say this beer surprised and impressed me is an understatement: an awesome unexpected treat. We drank this blind and this beer did not at all match my expectations based on my feeble brain. This gives me hope for some other BA Floyd's offerings.

Pour is dark brown, almost black with a tan head. Nose has some olive up front, hints of roasted malt with a strong berry sweetness and touch of white wine. Taste has less olive, still some with a touch of chocolate malt and some clean malt sweetness and notes of green grape. Medium to full body Moderate carbonation.

On tap at the 2014 Firestone Walker Invitational Beer Fest held at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, CA.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, citrus zest, and bourbon aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa, raisin, and bourbon flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness and an alcohol kick on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty with its unique raisin flavor that I am getting.

Retro. Oozing from the tap, great carbonation and not over the top sweetness. Great bourbon flavor.

This is one of the most unique stouts I've ever tried. It has the richness and density of a stout but the crispness and refreshing character of white wine. Somehow FFF gets it all to work well together

750 449/522. olde hickory snifter.

dark, very dark, brown. mild head. smell is very barley wine esque but not exactly...good amount of alcohol too. taste is smooth up front with dark fruit and ends with a tad of sourness. slightly infected? not sure, though I dig it. medium bodied with mild carbonation.

overall very interesting. good. not great.

Bottle 115/522 poured into a Hill Farmstead stem.

A: Pours deep black with two fingers of tan head. Lots of lacing on the glass.

S: Roasted malt, baker's chocolate, alcohol, a hint of caramel and a light vanilla note. Nice, but something is a bit out of place.

T: Roasted malt, very hop-forward. Not much alcohol bite, but a strong astringent flavor. Bitter chocolate. Wine character is shining through. Vanilla and brown sugar. Decent.

M: Slightly thin with a strong alcohol presence.

O: An interesting beer, but it's too muddled for me. I like wine barrel stouts, but this one doesn't work for me.

Tasted at FoBAB in a taster glass.

Appearance is dark just as the title describes it. Thick dark stout.

Smell is sweet. Chocolate malty notes.

Taste is amazing! I'm new to the type of barrel used to age this beer. It was a sweet wine barrel (moscatel?) I had the opportunity tasting the regular version and was very pleased with it so naturally a barrel-aged version got me running to it. I can't really compare it anything I ever had. Sweet dark roasted malty stout. But it's not like molasses sweet, like Ice wine sweetness. If that makes sense. It's complex. I was able to snag a bottle when it was released at FFF and I'm so happy I did. $40 a bottle seemed steep but only 522 bottles.
