This is without a doubt the worst beer I have ever tried. 750ml waxed bomber, #511 of 801. Pours copper color, no head at all, immediately the entire room reeks of blue cheese, rotting trash, and backed up septic system. We all took one sip and 4 out of 5 of us spit it out. I don't believe this was an infected beer as they usually gush with carbonation and have a very distinct smell/taste. This was literally just a rotten bottle of garbage. If you have any of these bottles in your possession and have the ability of taking them back to the FFF, I suggest doing that. This beer must have been completely different fresh, because there is no way that it should get the score it currently has.

I have to wonder if there is just incredible variability in the bottles or if I'm tasting anything remotely like folks rating this a 4.

Hazy orange, low carb, looks a little viscous. Smell is "wow" levels of bad; goat cheese left in plastic wrap until it gets sodden and sour, sweaty clothes left in a heap to ferment. The taste is surprisingly mellower - I was expecting a hit of acidity that thankfully isn't there - but follows the old goat cheese and socks pattern of the aroma. There is some wine quality underneath and a decent viscosity to the feel, but this is far, far, far from a saison.

If post-apocalyptic nuclear mutant troglodytes attempted to make a brett saison, I think this is what they'd create.

When this came out in late December of last year my friends and I each grabbed a bottle. The one we cracked the following week was pretty disappointing. It lacked almost any funk at all and it wasn't a great base to begin with. Fast forward 6 or so months and the second bottle was almost completely different. A nicely made saison that I would buy regularly at half the price point (10$). Here's to hoping the 3rd bottle is even better the last. Cheers!

2013 vintage. Bottle # 149/801.

Pours a hazy dark orange with a foamy bone head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour with malt, grain, fruit, Brett, and wine aromas. Taste is much the same with funk, Brett, and wine flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of wood and funk bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a Brett presence that comes across very earthy in the taste.

Picked this up at the brewery a few days after Christmas.

Served in a FFF Teku.

A: Poured an amber color, infinitely cloudy, and with a sticky, soapy, white head.

S: So much candy here: Jolly Rancher, Pixie Stick dust, and just a mere hint of a Belgian yeast strain.

T: Not a saison to my mind, but I'll take it. So sugary and delectable. However, it WAS quite good.

M: Perfect mouthfeel, ridiculous lacing, and quite the dessert-like sugar content.

O: Hell, I think this was worth the $20. Then again, I'm an avid FFF fan.

A friend of mine (the legendary Bill F.) picked me up a few bottles from 3 Floyds on a recent trip through Indiana. This was #610 out of the barrel-aged, limited batch of 801.

Appearance 4.0: Poured out a lovely apricot golden color. Nice lacing. Nice 1/2" head. Translucent.

Smell 4.5: Whoah! This beer has an amazing bouquet. So much going on here: I definitely pick up either lacto bacillus or brett. Also, a deep, tannin-heavy scent of wood...was this aged in cabernet barrels? I definitely pick up big, winey tannins, a certain cheesiness in here as well along with the smell of musty cellars and wood rosins.

Taste 4.5: Just amazing. Front is somewhat sweet, but this is immediately balanced by a funky, deep wine-like wood taste. Middle is where more of the tannins and the malt come together and then there is this sourness that seeps in and takes the taste to an entirely different level. Finish is where more of the sourness and the musty, dusty goodness seep in along with a spicy hit of the bacteria.

Mouthfeel 4.0: Champagne-like, light effervescence. Excellent complement to the brew.

Overall 4.5: Fantastic beer. I have tasted beers that claimed to be saisons or biere de gardes and they have been all over the place. However, this brew is just so amazing in its depth of taste, smell and everything else that it nails it as a beer -on its own-- not just as a style. Highly recommended.

750 mL bottle purchased at the brewery on 12/22/13, bottle #225/801, 2013 vintage, poured into my FFF Teku and drank over an hour.

A: 2/3 - amber-brown coloration; little clarity (cannot see or read through); rocky mahogany head settles into a one finger head; moderate alcohol legs

S: 8/10 - mixture of saison and barnyard aroma; no hop aroma; no gross flaws detectable

T: 15/20 - on the front on the tongue, there is an astringent sourness that dominates; this develops in the middle of the mouth to a mild barrel-aged malt character with some Belgian yeast fruity ester flavors; finishes dry and pleasant inviting another sip

M: 4/5 - low-to-moderate body, appropriate moderate-to-high carbonation; would guess 6-8% ABV; little-to-no aftertaste

O: 16/20 - pleasant barrel-aged sour that develops as it warms; in my opinion, this beer needs to commit to either being a saison or an American wild and the barrel needs to shine through more; also, in my opinion, it's not worth $20/bottle and, for the cost, I'd prefer to spend that money on either a Bruery or Lost Abbey sour
