Poured into a tulip glass from the bottle.
A - Nice and dark with the slightest crimson hue. Head was a nice dark color that complimented the beer. Retention was poor and there was very minimal to no lacing though to be fair, I was using my cousin's glassware and don't know if it was "beer clean".
S - Smelled of chocolate, maybe brown sugar, light happiness. Complimented by slight fruity sweetness.
T - Wow. Very very good. So smooth. Dark chocolate, roasted something or other with a slight hop presence. The tart cherries are what do it for me though. The finish is dominated by the tart cherries. Its like biting into a dark chocolate filled with a fresh Wisconsin tart cherry. I can not praise the taste enough.
M - Feels nice. Nice and creamy with the tart cherry cutting right through it, leaving your tongue very satisfied. Light, prickly carbonation is a good compliment.
O - For $40 per bomber this stuff better be good, and it is. Unbelievably so. I wish my pockets were deeper. I won't be seeking it out again for that price but it was definitely a memorable experience.

A friend of mine (the legendary Bill F.) picked up a few bottles from the legendary 3 Floyds. This was the most expensive ($40) and from the most limited run of barrel aged bottles. Will it be the best?
Appearance 3.5: Poured out a generic black with a white head. Head size was just OK at 1/4". Lacing was disappointing.
Smell 3.5: OK nose, but very subdued. Interesting acetone smell, probably from the barrel aging, but no scent of wood. I also smell the expected toasted grains, but none of the tart cherries.
Taste 3.5: Front was light and somewhat devoid of flavor, but the acetone smell turned into a strange (but not unpleasant) acetone taste. Middle is where the malt pops up along with a smoked grains flavor. Finish was somewhat dry, along with a mild taste of hops and a final punch of malt. I could detect no cherries. Also, could not detect a taste of barrel aging. Aftertaste was short and focused on smokey grains.
Mouthfeel 3.5: OK, but somewhat watery in the mouth.
Overall 3.5: A good beer, but the fabled 3 Floyds can -and has-- done better. This beer was a bit off for the style and it seemed to me that it was a "hey let's through this and that in the beer and see what we get" kind of brew. I love cherries and was disappointed that I detected zero cherries in this beer. Frowny face emoticon for me and proof that rare and expensive does not equal excellent.

2013 vintage. Bottle # 247/396.
Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and sour fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with sour roast, cocoa, and fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness and acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a nice sour cherry integration with the base beer.
