Notes/Commercial Description:
30 IBUs - A bold Scottish ale with a complex malty body derived from roasted and crystal malts balanced with just the right combination of hops. This ale pours a deep ruby color, has a sweet malty nose with layered caramel and roasted notes and a full body. Robust yet smooth, Robert The Bruce is a malt lover’s delight.

Poured from a bottle in July 2012.

For perspective, my primary basis for comparison for this beer is Founder's Dirty Bastard, which is one of my personal favorites.

A: Nice semi-transparent brownish pour which turns to a nice shade of red through the light. Little to no head or lacing.

S: Nice smell, a bit of booze and lots of malt.

T: Malty, malty, malty, with just a hint of booze on the finish. Not as boozy or complex as the Dirty Bastard, but still a good beer.

M: Thinner than I'm used to, but that's refreshing. An easier drinker due to the slightly thinner mouth feel and lower ABV.

O: An above-average beer, and one I'd happily drink again. With Founders and what some would argue as their "flagship" Dirty Bastard less than 10 miles down the road, though, it's hard to put this above the Founders offering.

From a bottle into a pint glass.

A: pours dark red with about 1/4 inch of thin foam that disappears quickly. I did get several rings of lace that clung to my glass through out.

S: dominated by yeast and malts.

T: a bit sweet at times giving off brown sugar notes. Yeast, malts, and a bit of oak bitterness at the end.

M: smooth and quite easy drinking. I would say medium for mouthfeel

O: not even close to my favorite from Three Floyd's or even a Scottish Ale for that matter. Not bad...but not great either.
