Scottish Ale |  6.50% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
30 IBUs - A bold Scottish ale with a complex malty body derived from roasted and crystal malts balanced with just the right combination of hops. This ale pours a deep ruby color, has a sweet malty nose with layered caramel and roasted notes and a full body. Robust yet smooth, Robert The Bruce is a malt lover’s delight.

Poured from a bottle in July 2012.

For perspective, my primary basis for comparison for this beer is Founder's Dirty Bastard, which is one of my personal favorites.

A: Nice semi-transparent brownish pour which turns to a nice shade of red through the light. Little to no head or lacing.

S: Nice smell, a bit of booze and lots of malt.

T: Malty, malty, malty, with just a hint of booze on the finish. Not as boozy or complex as the Dirty Bastard, but still a good beer.

M: Thinner than I'm used to, but that's refreshing. An easier drinker due to the slightly thinner mouth feel and lower ABV.

O: An above-average beer, and one I'd happily drink again. With Founders and what some would argue as their "flagship" Dirty Bastard less than 10 miles down the road, though, it's hard to put this above the Founders offering.

look: 4.5 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance:
Minimal light tan head, dark with a copper/reddish hue in the light
Nose:
rather minimal scents coming from this beer, alcohol, malt, caramel
Palate:
light alcohol presence weaved in and out of this beer, mild malt, sweet caramel, dried fruit flavors in the finish. Light Orange/citrus.
Overall:
I've been becoming a big fan of scotch ales as of late. This is a really well balanced and enjoyable beer. This one ranks high up on my list for this style of beer.
