The appearance and aroma of this beer are lacking in comparison to the best Scotch Ales (I'm thinking in particular of Belhaven Wee Heavy). It looks just a touch darker than cola, and the nose picks up little more than malt, with maybe a hint of fruit.
The taste, however, is superior: like many American examples of UK styles, this is noticeably hoppier than your average Scottish ale, lending a nice herbal note to the usual malty-fruity-peaty trifecta. And though the mouthfeel is lighter than that of many of its brethren, a lingering aftertaste of liquored fruit lends the beer a nice complexity.
The label says "Scottish Style Ale" rather than straight-up Scottish Ale, and that's what this is -- and a damn fine one.
