I drank this in mid-February 2016, but the (gift) bottle was dated October 2014. Does a friend's fridge count as cellaring? It tasted of roasted malt with notes of coffee.

This is one beer that has everything going for it. This baby pours a cloudy reddish brown with a small beige head. Lotsa candy flavors here making this a sweet brew. Smooth easy during beer.

The is another one of those beers that I am really surprised that I have never taken the time to review. It is arguably the beer that really made me fall in love with the style many years ago, and I still really enjoy this one today.

My string pour easily gets me three fingers of light biscuity tan head. Body is a deep mahogany brown tone. Nose is full of woodsy, metallic tones as well as sweet bread malts. The flavors are sweet and malty yet bold and complex. Rich spicy notes come through big time also on the back of the tongue. If you like bug malt bomb brews that aren't just about being sweet this beer is right up your alley.

Live review. Poured from 12 oz. bottle that I traded at 12 oz. bottle of Bell's Hopslam for about a year ago from a friend. 09/16/2014 stamped near the neck of the bottle.

Look. Dark Mahogany, brown body under a light brown head.

Smell. Wonderful malt goodness that is a bit distant. perfect for the style.

Taste. Really nice Scottish Ale malt goodness with some barley aftertaste. It is brewed to style but with a nice depth that I do not always perceive in Scottish Ales.

Feel. Good depth and thickness in the feel, which is not consistently found in Scottish Ales.

Overall. Very solid Scottish Ale.

Notes: I am glad that I traded for this one. Add this to my long list of beers that I have appreciated from Three Floyds.

IF you like scottish style ales or ales this a good one. This is the first 3 floyds I got my hands on after having Zombie Dust a few years ago. It pours a chestnut brown, smells of roasted hops. Caramel lacing with nice lacing. It is not my flavor of beer but still excellent.

BOD 2/3/16. Dark brown cola like pour that is clear and turns a beautiful garnet under intense light. Outstanding head volume and retention, world class lacing.

Outstanding nose of toasted malt with subtle notes of char and smoke over a caramel substrate with a dark fruit element, probably plum.

Almost medium body with a very smooth texture that has creamy aspects. World class carbonation with a nice effervescent middle and a rollicking finely bubbled prickly finish that tickles the tongue.

The flavor profile is quite outstanding. Intensity is moderate, complexity is outstanding and balance is perfect. In short, this tastes great but doesn't hit you with in your face flavor intensity. This is a malt forward beer that begins toasty, progresses to a moderate sweetness with strong caramel notes and a subtle molasses aspect then flows to the middle. The middle delivers just enough bitterness to perfectly balance with a pine and roast character that delivers a touch a char and a dose of smoke. These flavors slowly fade into the malty finish that brings a slight dryness and a hint of plum. Alcohol remains completely covered and a nut character emerges during the fade which also brings the strongest molasses aspects.

Dark brown body with ruby tints, dense light tan head with striations of lace. Nose and taste of rich nutty toffee, buttery caramel, toasted malt and faint raw grain, oak, slight brown sugar, with mild hop bitterness keeping pace with the sweetness. Rich mouthfeel, tongue-coating, with lively but soft carbonation.
This is at once warming and full bodied and easy drinking. Rich feel and rich malty flavors and sweetness mixed with balancing bitterness. It shocked me early in my journey, and many great beers later it still impresses me.

Ignore the other rating that pan it for not being a Scottish Ale. It does have a nice malt profile, not overly hoppy, but it does have (to me) a hop profile more like a brown ale but has a bigger body than it should. In keeping in the "it not normal" mantra of FFF, I really enjoy this as a malty, not overly hopped, brown ale.

This was a pleasant surprise the first time I had it and remains good the several times I returned to it. The surprise came early in my beer-drinking career because I thought 3 Floyds brewed just for hop-heads. Robert The Bruce is smooth and is saved from being sweet by having just enough hops. Balanced.

Deservedly on the "1001" list.

Couple fingers of brownish to tan foam, fairly frothy which slightly reduces retention, thinnish wispy lacing, however, it does stick around decently. Opaquely cloudy liquid, brownish with brighter orange rims, not much in terms of visible carbonation. Strong, boozy nose of caramel, malts, butterscotch, cola, the light fig to plum fruit scents overcome by a peppery, grainy spine, perhaps not as overpoweringly sweet as many in the style. Medium-bodied, presents a strong churn to the carbonation alongside a drying breadiness. Cola, caramel, molasses, scone, orange peel, and range of plum to peach fruit flavors comprise most of the experience. Dry ending without losing flavor intensity, has some alcoholic heft which suggests it is best consumed with food.

12 oz bottle. Deep walnut brown with ruby tint, thin head fades quickly. Sweet caramel aroma. Taste is sweet caramel malt, but not overly slow, gives way to a balanced bitterness in the finish. Medium creamy mouthfeel. Overall enjoyed this scotch ale, not too overpowering or thick, very drinkable.

Poured out of a 12 oz bottle into one of my tulip glasses, this beer pours a clear, very dark, deep amber brown color with some lighter amber/ruby highlights when held up tot eh light. Has a slightly tan/off-white head that is about an inch thick when first poured that settles to a very thick surface coating film layer of foam along with some pretty good lacing. Aromas of toasted caramel malt and bread along with notes of molasses and brown sugar. The taste pretty much follows suit, with toasted caramel malts and bread that gives way to molasses and brown sugar notes along with a hint of nut brown roastyness too. Rounded out with a slight hop bitterness, but the malts and other sweet flavors certainly dominate this flavor profile. Also a bit boozy too taste wise, and I feel that aspect compliments this beer nicely. Has a nice, crisp, slightly chewy and sticky, also smooth, medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Easy to drink in a very nice way indeed. A very solid, spot on representation of this style and another very excellent beer from Three Floyds!

Malty and complex with sweet caramel notes. Good roast ones that is somewhat nutty or biscuity. Good body but not what I would call heavy especially for the style. A little boozey on the backend.

Taste is caramel malt smooth, complex, semi sweet notes with hint of spice.
Dark amber/brown in color, clear in clarity. Malt with some vanilla notes to the nose with a hint of hops in the aroma.
Medium body with delicate lace after the creamy head dissipates. One of my go to beer from my buddies from 3 Floyds

S- Sweet, toasted bread notes

T-Balanced, doesn't overkill with the malty-ness but still rich in flavor

Overall- A very smooth and balanced Scotch. Not exciting in the best way.

On fraught at djs restaurant. Brilliant reddish brown with fluffy head. Sweet malts on the nose. Taste is the same. Delicious and creamy. My first Scottish ale, for sure not my last.

12 oz. bottle, bottled on date 10/01/2015, so relatively fresh. Finally getting around to reviewing this year-round offering from Three Floyds.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

A - It pours a very dark cola brown, with hues of dark ruby showing through when held to the light.

S - Aromas of slight alcohol fumes, molasses, brown sugar, brown bread.

T - Taste follows the nose: sweet notes of toffee / caramel, creamy malty nuttiness, brown bread, brown sugar, & hints of molasses.

M - A smooth & creamy body. Medium-full with good low lying carb. Easy-drinking.

Overall, a fairly simple but enjoyable Scottish ale offering from Three Floyds. Not their best year-round release in my opinion. I'd like to see what the barrel-aged treatment is like.

Can't say much about appearance, as it was poured straight into a non-transparent drinking vessel. Dark brown, for sure. At least semi-transparent. Didn't really detect much red. Tannish head. Toasty on the nose. Sweet malt character, a bit roasty or smokey on the palate. Medium-bodied, well-carbonated, and smooth. Would love to revise this review and rating when I can appreciate this beer in a more appropriate setting. Enjoyed at an event at a friend's house. Had it once about a year ago as well, straight from the source. Cool, looks like I'm the 3000th 'had'. What do I get?

Looks real dark with some reddish hues. Creamy 1 finger head that sticks around. Smells good. Smell a little of that alcohol. Getting a real strong malty aroma. Little smoky. Tastes really good. A little crazy right up front. Caramel tastes. Roasted favors. I dig it. I like Scottish ales like this, and this ones real good. Overall like it a lot.

Had this on tap at Olde Town Ale House in Fishers.

First experience with a Scottish Ale. When poured there was maybe a fingers worth of head, the body giving off a dark caramel color. Quite pretty to look at. The smell hinted at delicious malts, caramel, and a bit of alcohol. The taste is very mellow malt, with an ever so slight bitterness. Almost bourbon taste at the back of the tongue. Alcohol is hidden very well, I had no idea its ABV was so high until I jumped on here. Delicious all around. Due to high ABV, drinkability is reduced.

Enjoyed from the bottle in a snifter. This classic from 3 Floyd's delivers with a fantastic dark mahogany brown color and a nice off white head of foam that settles to a thin layer and thick ring with subtle lacing. Nose of brown sugars, fresh dark bread and crust, and light hops. Flavors follow the nose with fresh dark bread and brown sugars making merry on all sides with a raisin like quality towards the middle and settling on a spicy hop note on the back. Crisp and effervescent mouth feel is lively finishing clean with a nice alcohol warmth on the background. Exceptional. A constant "go to" Scottish style made in Indiana. A classic.

L: Pours deep chestnut under a 1” cream colored foam collar that leaves whore stocking lace.
S: Malty aromas, fresh baked bread crust.
T: Slightly sweet beginning with very rich, bready malt flavors including caramel, a trace of chocolate, slight toffee and a little grainy astringency on the finish from the use of unmalted barley. Moderate levels of hop.
F: Medium full body, medium low carbonation.
O: Tastes like a marriage between a double brown and a Scotch ale. Has a little more hops than usual for a Scotch Ale and a lot of the malt character tastes like it is from specialty malts rather than from a long boil and under modified malt. Still, it is a very good beer.

Taste: Clean toasted toffee malt sweetness and a light bready finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body; Smooth with the right amount of carbonation that hits your tongue right away, and a moderately bitter finish

Overall: This is the type of beer that doesnt have off flavors but nothing that jumps out at you either; It needs more alcohol to boost flavors to compete with my favorites in the style (Dirty Bastard, Old Chub). But it's a basic, light, yet enjoyable Scotch ale.

Look - Brown, almost amber. Thin ivory head with weak bartender pour. Little lacing.

Smell - Plum. Malt. Caramel.

Taste - Plum. Malt. Caramel. Toffee. Tootsie roll.

Feel - Medium feel. Medium carbonation and almost a carbonation bomb. Very little bitterness on finish and aftertaste.

Overall - Solid brown/Scottish ale. I don't know what's not normal here.
