In order to survive in the 14th century one needed to be a force to be reckoned with. In Brittany, Spain and France this knight proved his mettle in battle. This tart blueberry ale was brewed in one of our 3000 gallon foeders in his honour.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle from September 2021. Picked up on the discount shelf at Angel's Share in Gambrills for about $4. This is a very acidic beer, first and foremost. There is a decent amount of jammy blueberry even after close to 2 years in the bottle, but the lemon sourness is the number one flavor component. The tannin level is quite high as well, although not to the point of making the beer astringent. There's a slight but welcome warm oak and vanilla undertone. Mouthfeel is moderately carbonated and off-dry. Overall an excellent fruited oak-aged sour.

A - Medium to dark blueberry colored pour with perfect clarity and light carbonation. Lacing is raspeberry colored and thin.

S - Big tart, tangy twangy blueberry on the nose (big time).

T - Follows the nose with acidic, tart, twangy blueberry from start to finish and ends on the tangy puckering side.

M - Big medium body with gentle carbonation that gives way to a soft finish. Leaves the mouth watering in all directions.

O - Too twangy for me but respectfully reviewing in respect of the style.

Look: It pours a plum red color with a pink head. Head retention is low.

Smell: It has a moderately strong sour aroma that features blue berries and cherries. There are some vinous notes with a bit of sweetness in the nose.

Taste: It has a strong blueberry sour flavor that has a low sweetness to it. There are some low cherry flavor and low floral notes.

Feel: It has a vinous like quality to it as well. It has a medium body with a strong tart finish with a touch of sweetness. It also has some alcohol warming.

Overall, there is a good combination of wine elements and the blueberries that makes this a well made beer.

First review in the style so bear with me
L: sangria
S: tart and sweet blueberry with hints of malt sweetness but predominantly tart with a touch of chocolate.
T: tart up front with sweet fruity complexity. A little red wine and a few flavors I can’t put my finger on.
F: Above average viscosity, feels like a wine/mead made using blueberry rather than a normal beer.
O: I’ve been dying to try a saison and wow. I like good complexity in my malt beers ie stout/porters but this is complex in a whole different aspect. I love it the price tag is a little high though. Overall would have again easily.

Had Chevalier Bertrand du Guesclin poured from 12-oz. bottle, stamped "BOTTLED 11-15-20," into Teku tulip.

Pours nearly black, revealed as a beautiful deep purple when backlit, and rusty orange in sunlight, with minimal, very light-tan head, which dissipates immediately and leaves no appreciable lace. Aromas of tobacco and extremely tart funk off pour, then some spice, and big wine barrel, even brandy-like aromas as warms. On tasting, begins extremely tart, sour and biting, carrying into some tobacco over a base of dark and then citrusy fruits, or maybe just blueberries, and finally a biting, sweet and very sour finish.

This is what to do with blueberries in beer.

A lot more sour in nose and taste than I expected. Dark in color, lots of carbonation and LOTS of sour. Wine overtones, with a jaw tightening bite. Watch-out for this one.
