We're on our way up to the Michigan coast for a long weekend, and stopped at 3 Floyds Brewpub for lunch. I've already had the War Mullet and Zombie Dust, and wanted a small beer for dessert. After looking at the extensive list of beers, this one fit the bill perfectly, especially since I still had an hour and a half of driving to go. It was labled as a coffee stout, and was served as a half pint.

Location: On tap and served in an imperial-style half pint glass at Three Floyds Brewpub in Munster, IN.

Numbers: 5.9% ABV, ~160 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It's deep black, and dark enough that when I held it up, I couldn't see any light through it. There's a thick creamy, tan head on it, that feel after a minute or two to just a thing layer across the top that left a decent amount of lacing as I drank it. There was a heavy, dark roasted coffee aroma.

Taste & Feel: The body is solidly medium, and the mouthfeel is very smooth and slightly creamy and oily. The flavor up front is a semi-sweet baker's chocolate-like dark cocoa flavor, which turns very roasty in the middle. The roastiness opens up quite a bit in the finish, revealing a very big, roasty-bitter coffee flavor. The aftertaste is just like a Starbucks dark roasted coffee, and similarly, lasts for a couple of minutes.

Food Pairing: This tastes just like a cold cup of coffee, so I'd probably pair it with breakfast, like donuts or pancakes. Unfortunately, I think they only serve this at the pub, so you'd have to find something on the menu there. Perhaps a steak would complement the big roasty flavors.

Overall Impression: This beer pretty much tasted like a cold, bold, cup of dark roasted coffee at Starbucks. There were lots of dark roasty and dark cocoa flavors, with a coffee like bitterness in the finish. Overall, I would have liked it a bit more beer/stout forward instead of the intense coffee flavor and bitterness, but it wasn't too bad. If you enjoy cold, dark roasted, black coffee, you'll enjoy this beer.
