Style | ABV
American Double / Imperial IPA |  9.50% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
9.5% ABV 99 IBUs - A hophead’s dream beer. This Imperial India Pale Ale has an opening salvo of mango, peach and citrus hop aromas that sit atop a pronounced caramel malt backbone. Although Dreadnaught is a strong and intensely hoppy ale, its complex flavor is both smooth and memorable.

The pour leaves a cloudy, deep orange body, topped by a small white head with great lacing. Aroma of piney hops and citrus fruits. Taste is of grapefuits and oranges, intense, fresh hops, and a sweet maltiness that balances out the flavor. Mouth is big and thick and the finish is long, slow, and dry. Terrific flavor, thanks!

Serving Type - 22oz bottle a friend received in a trade. Poured into a Perfect Pint glass modified with a Giants logo (sticker) for Super Bowl Sunday.

Appearance: Amber with a slightly cloudy appearance.

Smell: Hop bomb with strong citrus aroma.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Tons of hops and a nice malty backend. Very deceiving alcohol content. Malty sweet finish that's lacking from my current DIPA fave: Heady Topper.

Overall: This doesn't knock Heady Topper of its crown for me but comes really close if not possibly even a tie. If I had the chance to try this again I would love to taste the two side by side to see which was king.

A: Some hoppy haziness, good one-finger white head, good amount of carbonation, a dark golden almost amber color, nice white lacing, looks good

S: Some peach and citrus hoppy aromas, touch of sweetness, a very pleasant smell

T: Initially sweet, making way for blend of hops, then a bit of bitterness, complex

M: Smooth, oily, medium to full bodied, decent carbonation, superior feel

O: Very good IIPA, had it before and will have it again, thank you 3Floyds for what you do

2012 vintage. No bottle date, but acquired on delivery day from a bottle shop in Ohio a week ago. Thanks, BeRanger. 22 oz. bottle poured into a stemless red wine glass.

A: A golden orange body with 2 inches of fluffy white head. Outstanding retention and lacing. This DIPA looks sticky as hell from the way the slowly receding head is clinging to the sides.

S: Grapefruit and citrus hops all the way here. No messing around. This just smells like a hop bomb.

T: And it is. Whoa. Grapefruit/citrusy hops through and through. I might get a hint of the sticky pine hops on the back end, but this is incredibly citrusy. And delicious.

M: Slick, oily, and sticky with a well-balanced, yet bitter, aftertaste. I actually really love the mouthfeel of this.

O: Flat-out one of the best DIPA's I've had. Along with Hopslam, this sits right at the top of the mountain of midwest DIPA's. I wish we could get this beer all the time in Michigan, but it makes me thankful when I do end up with a bottle. I'll never turn this beer down.

Edit: I just reread my review of Hopslam from a few weeks ago. In terms of my favorite DIPA's, Dreadnaught is closer to Hopslam than I originally thought. Having to choose between the two is a very nice problem to have.

From notes - had on tap at FFF and bottled.

A - deep orange large head, great lacing.

S - huge hop aroma - mango, pineapple, citrus - fantastic.

T - follows the smell. Hops, hops and more hops with enough malt to make this as balanced an IIPA as I've had.

M - medium to full bodied, moderate carbonation.

O - Incredible. Has to be among the best of the best. Hop lovers should seek this out.

Poured from Bomber (1 Pint 6oz) into a Stella Artois Chalice.

A- The color is a rich murky golden brown. Short lubberly head dissipated right away, a fine looking double IPA.

S- It smells strongly of mango with a hint of grapefruit and even a very tiny hint of pomegranate. The rich fruity overtones help mask the light scent of alcohol that is present. it smells very tropical and citriusy.

T- The initial taste is very very sweet and reminiscent of a sweeter Old Ale. The first thing I thought upon tasting it was that this has been aged slightly? In a good way.The taste is of fresh tropical fruits like mango and papaya. For whatever reason it also reminds me of rhubarb cake. The sweetness lingers on your tongue for a second before spreading over a 2 second period into what I can only describe as a fire of citrus flavor. The transition leads it to finish with a tart grapefruity sting on the back of the tongue that burns slightly and leaves one wanting more. A herbal hoppy flavor is also present that melds nicely with the citrus tones.

M- Initially it comes of smooth and mild. It then leads into a choppy feel before leaving a nice alcohol burn on the back of the tongue and down the throat.

O- A very delicious double IPA. Not like some IIPA's that can be much too intense with hops. It's the perfect combination of sweet and tart hoppiness delight. One of my new favorite double IPA"s for sure.

147th Review
Bottle to Westvletren 12 (small) chalice

Enjoyed as part of a tasting in Utrecht (December 2011) as a result of Jeffo and doopiedoopiedoo's generosity. Thanks guys...can't wait to return the favor!

A: Burnt tangerine. 2+ (foamy white) fingernail head on medium pour.

S: Earthy notes of pine and grass. Sweet malt and caramel along with citrus, lemon zest, pineapple core, and grapefruit.

T: Loads of tropical fruit balanced with pronounced bitter hop character. Nice balance and so very smooth to drink. My sample pour disappeared rather quickly as I can never get enough of this beer!

M: Medium-full bodied with medium carbonation.

O: A very good offering from a brewery that knows how to use hops (and lots of them) to make really tasty beers. So drinkable and so good - every time. I love it! The only thing better than enjoying it out of the bottle with a great group of BA's is to enjoy it on-draft in Munster.
