Style | ABV
American Double / Imperial IPA |  9.50% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
9.5% ABV 99 IBUs - A hophead’s dream beer. This Imperial India Pale Ale has an opening salvo of mango, peach and citrus hop aromas that sit atop a pronounced caramel malt backbone. Although Dreadnaught is a strong and intensely hoppy ale, its complex flavor is both smooth and memorable.

Poured from a 22oz bomber I got from fellow BA Urbencaver who I must give a big shout out to into a chilled Duvel tulip glass.

A: Pours a light amber with an initial huge head that fades after a few minutes and leaves an awesome array of sticky lacing on the glass.

S: Just how I like my IPA's. Huge tropical notes of Mango and citrus with huge amount of hops balanced out with a semi-sweet malt background.

T: WOW, this beer is everything they say it is. It starts out with a bitter pine, tropical fruit taste and then the sweet malt background kicks in and all the flavors unite as one.

M: Very nice on the palate. Perfect amount of carbonation to this beer.

O: One of the best IPA's I have ever had. You wouldn't think the ABV was over 9% and you could get in trouble with this beer as it has a very easy drinking demeanor to it. Great IPA that I would highly recommend to the hophead

Served chilled in a traditional pint glass.

Poured a light translucent amber that had a froathy slight off white head. The foam faded to a minute layer and even equally small inconsistent ring around the glass. The first smells are hoppy freshness, floral, slight pine, dish detergent and citrus. This is a hop-o-vore's delight. Very slight malt and a tang of bitterness. Great composition. The 9.5% abv is not obvious... this is a smooth, non-boozy, kick ass beer. 3F's best brews are their hoppiest, in my humblest of opinions.

Enjoy!

Live review. Poured from the 22 oz. bomber that I bought at Save-On Tobacco & Beverage in Mentor, Ohio about a week ago for $10.99 into a clean, clear pint glass. 3F just started distributing to Ohio about a month ago and so I will be able to pick up a few here and there when I find them (the selections are sporadic according to two beer stores). I had a chance to try this at Chef Paul’s Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL about a year ago but I would have had to buy and drink the bottle at the restaurant and there were too many interesting beers on tap there to drink from a bottle. Anyway, I digress. No observed “best by” date.

A Slight haze hovers over a translucent honey yellow brown body under a moderately big head that dissipated over about 2 minutes into a single layer of bubbles on the top of the beer. Fine look for the style. I do like the light butterscotch candy look of the body. The more vigorous the pour, the thicker and bigger the head so you might want to be careful. The head sticks to the inside of the glass in a pleasing way as well. 4.0

S Hops hit me first but then this great, balanced malt presence follows closely behind. This beer smells big but great! 4.5

T Oh yes, I can immediately appreciate what all of the attention that this beer gets comes from! What a great balance of floral hops and caramel sweet malt! There is very little of the hops bitterness that I sometimes encounter in beers of this style. Instead is a great, lingering flowery hops that pleases well after the last sip. This is a very nicely crafted beer. 4.5

M Full and big like the smell suggested would be the case. The hops bitterness and the great big caramel sweet malt contribute to the huge feel but in this beer’s case big is beautiful because it is so well balanced. 4.5

D/O Drinkability is good for such a big beer with an elevated ABV% too. Overall this is a great beer. 4.5

Bottle served in a pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a pale yellow with a slight orange hue. A huge pillowy white head takes forever to dissipate.

Smell: piney hop aroma with a hint of grapefruit. The smell is actually a little faint. The bottle was fresh on the store shelves but who knows how long it was till it made it to the store.

Taste: A pleasant citrus hop flavor with a smooth clean bitterness that is well balanced by the sweet malt flavors in the background.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is surprisingly smooth for such a big hoppy beer. A pleasant surprise.

Overall: An excellent imperial IPA. Excellent balance between sweet malt flavor and citrus hop bitterness. The dry mouthfeel and smooth finish is especially impressive. The only downside is the price of the large format bottles.
