Dark beer with light amber light poking through. Big fluffy head though not that of a 10% sticky double IPA or imperial stout.

The flavor is of chocolate, esspresso, and a strong wood finish. Dark fruity hops mixed with cocoa lingers on the tongue. A bit of a spice note and some light anise hints (not an issue if you don't like the flavor imo it'll be pretty hard to notice).

Really a good beer. At 12 a bottle I'm not coming back but I still like it.

Brewed in collaboration with the band Corrosion of Conformity.

Bottled 1/7/16; drank 2/21/16 @ the Yarchives.

Murky brown/purple appearance.

A rough pour yielded a HUGE tan head (careful pouring!); strong tree-rung lace.

Cream, fresh earth, faint raspberry & mild booze heat notes in the nose.

Medium thick mouthfeel.

Black coffee & faint raspberry flavors up front; dry earth & astringent booze heat notes on the finish.

A brutal, dry, boozy finish mars a decent beer; kinda unpleasant.

22 oz bottle, bottled 11 months ago

Not sure if this beer is still fresh enough to drink. I received this baby in a beer trade, and it was bottled about 11 months ago. At 8.6% it’s borderline age-able.

Pours a two finger light brown, creamy head into my willi becher glass. The body is black, with hues of brown. The carbonation looks wild on this guy. The bottle was fizzing when cracked, and there is still a lot of bubbles rising. Head retention is very good, it took 3 or 4 minutes before it even started to die down. Now well over 7 minutes later, I still have half left. So far, a great looking beer.

On initial smell, the beer seems like it may be past it’s prime. It has a somewhat extract-y aroma. I haven’t had a Baltic Porter in forever, but this one smells very sweet. I did a little research and found that the IBU range is much lower than I remembered, and the allowed sweetness is much higher. Still, there is an extract feel to it. Past that, definitely some dark fruity aromas here, plum, fig, very sweet overall. Some chocolate lies underneath. Toffee, almost an English brown character to the aroma. Not terribly woody on the nose, but some may be there. Very creamy, with candied sugars. Overall, it’s definitely growing on me, this actually smells super good. I don’t notice that extract much anymore, the sweetness has fallen into their categories. There is not much I can say is “off” anymore, still, possibly a hair sweet for me. Still a great aroma though.

Wow, the flavor is not as tame as the aroma was. Definitely very sweet, but it has more than just that. Ever so slightly woody, with a small astringent booze kick at the end, not unpleasant. Not getting too much chocolate at all. Toffee hits for a nano second. Fruits mildly linger. The aromas I got are here for the most part, but very faint. A tad bitter, just barely. Overall this is a good beer. The flavors are not as distinguished as they are on the nose, and some are basically not there at all (chocolate), but the balance is much better, the slight bitterness and astringency add a much needed element that is not there on the nose. Not that I don’t love glasses of chocolate milk, but they are hard to handle. Overall very nice, but it could use some work on the individual flavors.

Mouthfeel is decent. The carbonation is low, which I suppose is appropriate? The body is a little lighter than desired. Not very chewy, but it does coat your mouth, sweetness lingers and coats everything. Not sure how to feel about this, I’d prefer something different.

The drinkability is surprisingly high for 8.6% the slight astringency and booze does not make this beer any harder to drink. Sweetness is a sliding scale, and this has its fair share of candied sugars, but it’s balanced enough that I can drink it fast.

Overall this is a really nice beer. Good aroma, great appearance, and a good flavor. I would have hoped for more definition from the flavors, and maybe a brighter mouthfeel, but those are minimal complaints, and this is overall a good beer.

The beer got slightly roasty as it warmed, not unwelcomed at all.

The retention on this was amazing, a half finger of head lasted well over 20 minutes. Overall this beer turned out to be one of the best looking beers I’ve had in years. The head hung around in “good” fashion for a very long time, with a small, quarter inch of head being there the entire time. Thick lacing was there all the way down the glass, amazing looking beer.
