Bottle poured into nonic glass.

A: 3.5 Pours bright golden with 1 finger of thin head that reduces very quickly and leaves no lacing. More clear than I had anticipated for the style.
S: 4.0 Clove, bubble gum, coriander, banana.
T: 3.75 same as smell. Nothing takes a strong lead leaving this pretty fairly balaced.
M: 4.0 Carbed well, smooth.
O: 3.75 I was able to try this at the brewpub, and I have to say it was much better on tap.

The beer is dark orange with only a mild haziness. The head is surprisingly nonexistent for a hefeweizen. Even an aggressive pour yields very little cap. The aroma offers some bubble gum like sweetness. Banana, clove, sugary candies. The taste is a little better than the aroma, lacking the cloying sweetness I had feared. A bit of prickly carbonation, in spite of the nearly still and lifeless appearance. Overall, a pretty solid beer.

22 ounce bottle into weizen glass; no bottle dating, but was released fairly recently. Pours very hazy golden orange color with a 1 finger fairly dense white head with decent retention, that reduces to a spotty lace cap that lingers. Minimal lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big orange peel, pear, apple, banana, apricot, wheat, bread, bubblegum, clove, pepper, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, malt, hop notes; with good strength. Taste of orange peel, apricot, banana, pear, apple, wheat, bread, clove, bubblegum, light pepper, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of orange peel, apricot, banana, pear, apple, wheat, bread, clove, bubblegum, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance, complexity, and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast, malt, and moderate hop flavors; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly creamy and very smooth mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice hefeweizen. All around good balance, robustness, and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, malt, and moderate hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle picked up 2 months ago when i was in town. Enjoyed from a FFF teku.

a - brew poured a rich yet transparent orange with a thin bubbly head that bubbled away almost instantly.

s - nose is big bubble gum and banana bread to a tee.

t - exactly as the nose advertised. Banana bread with bubble gum.

m - zingy and heavily carbonated, almost prickly. Not sure why others claim under carb. Although minimal head, this puppy is fizzy.

o - overall, i really enjoyed this beer. Everything is in the right place. If anything, I would dial back the aggressiveness on the carbonation and the bite. Solid hefe.

Drunk Monk is a terrible name, but this is certainly a good, fresh hefeweizen, though a bit less expressive and complex than many German imports, though quite ahead of most US attempts at the style. As a reference, this reminds me a bit of a blend between Schneider Gruunes and Original in flavor and aroma: richly wheat bread-like, with strong banana and bubblegum, slightly less phenol presence. Glad I was able to try this beer, but primarily because it's been a long sought-after, highly rated hefeweizen and that it's from Three Floyds. At $8 per 650ml bottle, it's much more effective to pick up three Weihenstephaner weizens (and not deal with traffic to the brewery and/or the wait in line to pick up bottles). If Three Floyds released this as an affordable 6-pack, though, it would be difficult to pass up.

Pours a 3cm tall head of foam, consisting of medium to large-sized bubbles that are white to off-white in color, with retention length of slightly over one minute, well below average for the style. The foam settles to a thin ring around the perimeter of the glass, also rather lackluster for what is normally an exceptionally good-looking style of beer. Lacing is surprisingly negligible, with only a few spots clinging to the sides of the glass. Body is a dirty golden orange color, with light bringing out slightly brighter golden orange-yellow hues. Beer is opaque from suspended yeast sediment, though carbonation can be seen at the top of the body, low in number and activity.

Aroma of Bavarian yeast with hearty, heavy, bread-like and slightly grainy wheat malt, lesser, but modestly present overripe banana mash, and very faint band-aid like phenols and bubblegum scents. Darker and grainier than I thought this would be, but still quite pleasant.

Flavor of fairly well-balanced wheat bread, banana ester, with nutmeg and band-aid phenols: quite good and easily drinkable. Taste opens with substantially sweet, fairly rich wheat malt, overripe banana flavors (esters), bubblegum, slightly sharp nutmeg-like phenols, and mild vanilla and musty and mushroom-like yeast on the front of the palate. Mid-palate of dense, bread-like wheat malt with modest graininess, heavy flavor of overripe bananas, nutmeg and band-aid phenols, balanced sweetness and vanilla. Back of palate is rich with hearty wheat bread flavor, slightly musty yeast, banana esters, spicy clove and nutmeg-like phenols, and bubblegum. Aftertaste is sweet, perhaps overly so, a bit cloying, with the overripe banana ester and bubblegum being in the forefront of the flavor, with wheat bread and phenols tucked into the back.

Beer is medium-light to medium in body, with carbonation of medium-low intensity, resulting in a rather flat, lightly foamy and watery mouthfeel that does little to accentuate the flavors and aromas of the beer. Closes dryly, but with substantial stickiness clinging to the lips and palate.

Served on tap in a pint glass.

Appearance: Drunk Monk 0pours a hazy faded golden color, with a small white head, which fades rather quickly to a ring on the edge of the glass. Light lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell: Banana, clove, and wheat are all present. Other spices and floral hops provide the support.

Taste: Although the banana flavors are quite strong, this is actually somewhat tame for FFF. Maybe I was just in the mood for something stronger. It starts out moderately sweet, with lots of banana, clove, and spice. A kick of bubblegum in the middle, finished out by light citrus but mostly floral hops.

Mouthfeel: The feel is sticky sweet, and moderately carbonated. Medium body.

Drinkability: My ratings may be weighed down by my exceptionally high expectations for Three Floyd's, but to me this was a decent, not a great beer.

Tasted on draft at Whole Foods Lincoln Park. Pours cloudy orange with a thin white head that dissipates quickly. Nose of spices, wheat, and light banana. Flavors are citrus acidity, wheat, clove, and banana. The body is light with average carbonation, and the finish is medium featuring banana. Overall, this is an awesome hefe that I could session on all day.

Aroma:Smells heavily of clove and banana.

Appearance:Cloudy pale orange, medium head retention, mild lacing.

Taste:The flavor is like the nose, heavy clove and banana. The mildly sweet flavor lingers on pleasantly through the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel:Nice carbonation, medium body.

Drinkability:This is a spot on hefeweizen, very typical of the style. It's a good example of how Three Floyds isn't a one-trick hop pony!

On-tap at the Clark Street Ale House. Big thanks to Victoria for this round. Awesome yeast funk and they really nailed the look. Quite dry in the taste. Quality brew, I had a few. They did not blew. Recommended. I can't say they nailed the style, but it is an acceptable interpretation. We finished the last of what they had at Clark St., and it's not clear if they will have more.

S - Tons of banana and spice.

T - Tons and tons of banana, some Belgian spices. Very fruity.

D - Medium body with lower carbonation.

Bottle from some fantasy baseball winnings. Thanks, Derek! Pours hazy yellow golden with a fluffy white 2 finger head that dissipates quickly. Really nice aroma of banana esters, honey, yeasty hefe funk, pears, sweetness. Flavor is sweet banana esters, light honey sweetness, pears, yeasty yeasties, lingering sweetness. Light bodied with plus carbonation as expected from the style. This is really nicely done actually.

This beer arrived in a wheat glass with a 1/2" of white, everlasting foam. I could smell the beer the beer from 3 feet away. The beer was breadcrust brown and was so hazy, I couldn't even see shapes through it.

This brew is about as sweet as a hefe can be. A bit more malt taste help smooth it would make this an even better beer. But it was a great beer as it was. The biggest knock I can give it is that it was thick on the tongue and didn't finish clean. It had the texture of a Russian imperial stout, but with the wheat flavor. Because of this, I wouldn't be able to drink more than a glass or two.

As Three Floyds Brewery set aside their hoppy ways to showcase their talents in the Weissbier world. Despite its light hop character, the brewers pour a plethora of complex taste into the wheat ale and does so with impeccable balance.

Dark gold in color, the firmly cloudy ale slowly releases a foamy blanket that's part of froth and part of fizz. Surly carbonation is nearly champagne-like as the head dissipates into a delicate creme of foam with lightly spotted lace. I'm somewhat surprised at the ale's struggle to form, retain and lace with its foam character.

Its balanced nose is equal parts banana, clove, bubblegum, wheat, apple, lemon, bread, vanilla and mint. There's so much variance in its nose, but the intensity is just slight of what's expected. Still, the ale projects a highly appetizing scent with only the slight herbal presence of hops.

Its leading sweetness is bready, doughy and yeasty with somewhat of a sprinkle of powdered sugar for a sugar cookie-type of culmination. Its whole wheat taste is the perfect vehicle to reel in the fruitiness of banana, lemon and green apple. The counterpart to fruit introduces with clove, white pepper, sulfur, mint and herbal tea leaves for a chai-like balance. Finishing with the oddly compelling taste of Juicy Fruit bubblegum and vanilla, the beer is soft and spicy through its final few drinks.

Light in body, the beer's creamy, dextrin-richness is given a lift from its strong effervescence that provides a light prickle as the bubbles explode off of the tongue. There's a moment in the middle taste after the carbonation subsides but before the dryness sets in where the beer's true residual malt sweetness is felt and applies a stickiness to the palate. But that's short lived as the minty dryness and peppery warmth assists the evaporation cooling effect from alcohol for a complex final palate sensation.

While Drunk Monk is certainly a fantastic Weissbier, a higher level of dryness while a better projected level of intensity of its overall flavor would get it closer to the likes of Weihenstephaner and Live Oak.

Another fine brew that I enjoyed at Three Floyds. The simple pleasure of sitting at the bar connected to the internet, writing this review. The beer came served in proper Hefe glass.

Creamy 3 finger head. Hazy straw to light amber color. Not much lacing to speak of.

Earthy, spicy and of course, banana. Very fresh..

Banana cream flavor with malt tones. And by malt, I mean like the shake. Really reminded me of the dessert with Nilla wafer, pudding and banana. Btw, I love that!! Certainly there was a sweetness here. Just the right amount of spice and all the basics are there. Coriander and a touch of clove.

Creamy bright mouth feel. The creaminess almost made the body seem thicker than it really was.

I enjoyed this and would have another on my next trip. Perhaps a bit sweet to enjoy multiple of this creamy sweet one..

Imbibed at the FFF Brewpub on 10/31/2010. Spoooky!

Appearace -- Pours a hazy honey with a finger of creamy white head.

Smell -- Husky grain, cream of wheat, banana and bubblegum, earthy yeast.

Taste -- Lots of hefe yeast flavor, predominantly banana and bubblegum, though clove becomes much more pronounced than in the nose. Husky malt, gentle powdered sugar sweetness, and cracked wheat.

Mouthfeel -- Medium-full in body with lively but gentle carbonation. Creamy would be accurate.

Drinkability -- While I'm not sure it stacks up to the versions of the Fatherland, it's still quite good. Very estery, very fruity and creamy. Applicant must love banana. Would *LOVE* to do a compare-contrast with Live Oak. Just sayin'...

A: A good head retention, that is white in color. The body is a light golden hue. Good lacing and steady stream of carbonation.
S: A classic Hefeweizen aroma, of spices and banana, while cloves seems to dominate. A very good intensity to the aroma.
T/M: This medium body brings rich tastes of banana and clove, while the off taste is a bready creaminess, which is very pleasant. Hold a classic Three Floyd's taste that is a thread that runs through most of there ales.
D: This is one of those Hefes that is so spot on to the classics in the style that it is extremely drinkable. I would buy this by the growler if at the brewpub and would drink this all year long. A good one to start the meal off with or to settle down during a snow storm.

The aroma is like a banana candy, sweet and sugary. There's a bit of vanilla, bubblegum, light yeast and spice on the nose as well. The flavor is more peppery than clove with a mellow banana and a doughy malt.

I tend not to gravitate to a Hefeweizen as my palate always perceives cloves but this one is quite good and ranks amongst my favorites.

Served in a pint glass, hazy orange yellow hefe appearance. Creamy foam, not overly present, but an unbroken skim is steadfast across it's surface.

Wheaty with banana and apple juice traces in the aroma. Sort of raw from the wheat, and a little bit of bubblegum from the yeast.

Light and drinkable, very traditional hefe here with banana and mild apple astringency. Not spicy or clove-y in the least. Smooth body, finishes fairly dry and quenching. Glad to have tried this, but not one to go bananas over.

An excellent American Hefeweizen, sitting right up there in quality with it's esteemed German counterparts. I was really impressed, very rarely do American brewers get this style quite right, but FFF has done it! Pours a hazy gold in color with a fluffy white head, served in a proper weizen glass. Nose was excellent, banana and bubblegum, plenty of yeasty notes as well. Taste followed suit, massive banana notes with clove almost matching, bubblegum in the background. Mouthfeel was spot on, fizy and full, yet still light enough and very refreshing!

I'm impressed!

Served in a shaker pint glass at The Firkin.

I was warned this wouldn't be necessarily representative of the beer's true nature, but I thought it was pretty good regardless. It pours a slightly hazed pale straw topped by a finger of white froth. The nose comprises banana, cinnamon, green apple, and clove. The taste holds notes of coriander, lemon, bananas, and nutmeg. The body is light, with a light carbonation and a rather refreshing feel. Overall, even if this was near the end of the keg, it was pretty dern tasty and enjoyable. Hopefully I can get some more later...

At Three Floyd's Brewpub

A - Hazy light amber, poured with medium white head, persistent ring around glass, soapy lacing throughout

S - Crazy amount of Bananas upfront and moderate Clove on the front, but mediun clove dominates the finish

T - Medium banana at first (I was expecting more from the nose) and balanced well by the clove. Finishes very clean with moderate amounts of both banana and clove. In the middle the banana really shines through and slight drys the mouth before both flavors meld together.

M - Medium Body, Medium Cabination, clean finish

O - Very solid, clean and brewed to style very well. For a Three Floyd's beer I was amazed that the hops never came through in the nose or while tasting.

After having a grower of Live Oak shipped to me this week and this beer randomly dropping, I had to do a taste off. I prefer Live Oak, but wouldn't hesitate to order this on a hot summer day. After reading many comments comparing the two for me it is no question, Live Oak is my preferred Hefeweizen.

Nice for the style. Very smooth...wish it had a bit more carbonation...had a slightly flat taste to it, but really, really nice. Deep yellow/amber in color...I bumped up the taste because it was just really good....some extra carb and this would have been right on, but all in all and awesome heff!!!

On Tap at Sheffield's in Chicago

Orange-Golden color with two fingers of head that slowly and completely dissipates. Smells of bubble gum, with sweet orange peel alongside bready yeast and mild coriander.

The beer has a nice balance between sweetness on the front and and hops on the finish. This is a subtle beer, with no one flavor jumping out in front of any others. Mildly carbonated, and refreshing. On one hand, I love to have a little more flavor, and somewhat expect it from a FFF beer. On that other, the mildness of the beer makes it quite drinkable.
