Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 03-19-2006

This beer is brewed during the hop harvest with a portion of unkilned or “wet” hops fresh off the vine. Apricot in color, Broo Doo’s nose has dominant orange, pine sap and floral notes, balanced by a glazed nut and toffee malt body. This celebration of the hop harvest has intense tropical fruit, citrus and spicy accents that showcase the complexity of the hops we all love.

My brother picked this one up along with numerous other midwest brews.

A: Pours a lovely golden yellow with a big bubbly head that dies down quickly. Sheet after sheet of lacing.

S: Yeah these are fresh green wet hops. Tons of fresh cut grass and floral scents. Sweet pine sap and hints of fresh squeezed Florida grapefruit.

T: I love the smell, this baby is all about hops. Fresh green grass and and grapefruit assaults the tongue. Typical of 3 Floyd's brews not much in the malt category.

M: Medium to full bodied brew with a dry characteristic.

D: So drinkable, nearly sessionable.

Overall: My favorite harvest ale to date, and this one has a few months age on it. I love 3 Floyd's for their aggressive hops and this one does not disappoint. Tons of flavor and so enjoyable. Man I wish I had a case of this one. My favorite IPA in quite awhile.

Pours dark amber, bordering on red. One finger head quickly fades to a thin collar. Nose is a sweet hop bouquet. Orange, grapefruit, pine, grass, and mint. Caramel and sourdough toast in there too. Pine, grass and grapefruit on the palate, with some sweetness from the malt balancing things out. Medium body, dry finish.

One of the best IPAs from out of California that I've ever had. Delicious!

Pours a hazy golden with a thick, white head. Good retention and outstanding lacing. Lots of tropical fruit and citrus on the nose with a faint dough aroma. Lots of grapefruit, mango, orange, and pine on the front of the tongue. Becomes increasingly bitter through the finish with faint hints of sweet caramel. Dry finish. Well balanced. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Overall, this might be the best wet-hop IPA out there!

Looks like a worn copper penny in appearance. Big time fluffy head with lots of sticky lacing that took awhile to go away. Smells of tropical fruits, mainly pineapple, fresh citrus hops, pine, and sweet malt. Tastes as it smells but more intense and juicy. Very fresh like. Finishes sweet with some nice bitterness that lingers. Mouth feel is medium bodied, moderately carbonated and a bit oily. Drinkability is incredible. Definitely the best harvest ale I’ve ever had. If you love hops, then this one’s for you! Not sure about that label though…Cheers!

Acquired from pochman, courtesy of BA Secret Santa 2009 so a big "Thank You" goes out to him. Poured from a 22oz bottle into an imperial pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a very thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is a very nice blend of floral hops, caramelized malts and fruity citrus.

T: The taste starts with strong burst of grassy hops bitterness. Then some citrus and caramel sweetness comes in next to temper the hops bite a little bit. The malt character is on the thin side but it works very well for this beer and creates a good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and very crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Very tasty, goes down quite easily, not too filling, decent kick, very good representation of style, this is an excellent hop bomb to drink for a whole evening.

Bottle poured into teku glass
A- pours orange, clear, with a two finger white head
S- pine, citrus fruit, earthy,I get hints of basil and mint as well
T- very refreshing, plenty of citrus fruit, pine resin, pleasantly grassy, wet hops, some strawberry, bubblegum, some honey
M- very very nice, light texture, good carbonation
O- I didn't find any of this last year so I'm really glad I got a bottle, probably one of my new favorite IPAs from FFF, this is refreshing, light texture, tons of flavor, a truly amazing harvest ale.

poured into tulip a deep golden, wheat color and a bit hazy which is the first sign it's going to be good. Plenty of grapefruity, piney hops aroma that you expect from FFF. Not overly bitter, not sure if grassy is the apropos description, but it's not as overtly bitter and malty as some of the other hop-heavy beers, which makes this an excellent change of pace.

Wish it came in sixers, since this is very drinkable and would be a regular at better price point. If you're a fan of Alpha King, Two-hearted and the like, you will enjoy a Broodoo, and my kids love the label...so much that it became a Christmas ornament on the mantle, replete with a star on top.

Updated Nov 4 2011: very fresh with more pungent pine, more creamy and full-bodied than I recall. Love the fresh hops, one of my favorit beers

Had this on tap today in an imperial pint glass.

The beer is a fairly clear, dark orange/amber color with a fairly thin white head.
The smell is fantastic! Strong pine and grapefruit/orange citrus with definite caramel aromas mixed in .

The beer taste has caramel and biscuits as its backbone and strong hop flavors and bitterness. The hop flavors are grapefruits, orange rind, and pine. This bitterness is very strong, but not obnoxious in any way.

The mouthfeel is medium. This is a very drinkable beer - in fact the most drinkable 100 IBU beer I've ever had. It's also easily the best and most interesting harvest ale I've ever tasted.

Broo Doo was poured from a 22oz bomber into a pub glass. This is the epidome of the FFF taste profile. Excellence...

Appearance - Hazy copper that hold a terrific 1 1/2 inch head with solid lacing on the glass to the bottom.

Smell - Piney nose right up front with a soft bit of orange citus hoppy aroma. You know this is FFF right away.

Taste - soft bitter hops, citra up front with a very smooth slight malt bill, its a crisp break from start to finish with no aftertaste - so drinkable its almost a perfect summer beer

Mouthfeel - oily ... feels heavy but the crisp finish sums up the beer

I could drink this beer consistently, the bomber went down easily with no problem - cant wait to drink again

Pours golden amber in color with a thin light white frothy head that has good retention.

Smell is incredibly fruity. Notes of fresh kiwi and pineapple are fowward along with a bright sweet orange backbone and a sweet caramel malt. Smells like candy.

Taste is incredible. Really fresh citrus like hops are forward and followed by a rich resiny pine stickiness and mild bitterness. Malt adds a really great sweetness that compliments the juicy flavors, aromas and mild bitterness perfectly.

Mouthfeel is really good. High amounts of hop oils and resins give this a big sticky feel that is cut with moderate amounts of carbonation. Overall medium body and very drinkable.

Overall this is an awesome hop harvest ale, really vibrant hop flavors and aromas.

From memory while on our beercation.
Served in a pint glass with two fingers worth of thick and creamy white head, slightly hazy golden body. Good retention and lacing.

Smells amazing, citrus and floral hops with some piney notes mixed in. Carmel sweetness shows through as it warms up.

Tastes like orange juice mixed with piney hops. Wow! Very oily and dank. Some sweet malts are present but not enough to keep it balanced, it is an IPA after all made by FFF, yum.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. A very sticky, oily, piney resinous finish.

Overall I enjoyed this one quite. Very complex and flavorful.
$5 or 6 can't remember.

Poured bomber into tulip, with a nice inch and a half head that took it's time to settle down while leaving some great lacing on the glass. Color is light golden with a slight orange hue.

Aroma is full of citrus fruits--orange, grapefruit, lemon, some pine, and floral notes

Taste is so good! sweet malt and strong hop flavor. Many of the same aspects of the aroma were noticeable in the flavor. A little bit of spice and a slight bitter finish

Mouthfeel - medium carb and body, crisp and somewhat dry

Overall this is a fantastic wet hopped ale. I had no problem putting the bomber down, which is nice - sometimes I hate having 9/10% ABV bombers. I will look forward to this release next year.

I've been eyeing this guy everytime I open the fridge. I finally couldn't wait any longer. Poured into my pint glass the beer is a bright orange gold hue. The off white head blasts a full three fingers high. It's so thick and dense you could cut it with a knife. The retention is otherworldy. I swear I waited a full five minutes for it to fade. After settling I'm left with huge webs of lace that look like horror movie cob webs.

The aroma is absolutely fantastic. Super fruity pineapple, oranges, grapefruit and apricots. The hops are piney but not super over the top piney. I'm not sure how it's possible to be so sweet and fruity and sour at the same time. Three Floyds does some amazing things with hops. Some light malt sneaks in after warming just to let you know it's still present.

The flavor is just as fruity as the nose. Insane juicy fruit sweetness is battled by sour piney hops. The malt is slighlty more of a presence in the taste. It's a very nice mix of the two oposing forces. Although the mighty hop wins out in the end.

Medium body with moderate carbonation.

Overall FFF has hit another grand slam in my opinion. This beer is superb in all facets. If it's not normal then I don't want to ever be normal. I could drink a parade of bombers of this golden nectar.

Pours a semi-hazy but glowing orange/copper color. The brew is topped with a thin but creamy white head which dissipated quickly. Out of the glass flows a fruity and citrusy hop aroma. The flavor starts with a nice sweet undertone of malt and then a juicy citrus hop bitterness takes over. Slightly tart but overall a well balanced beer. The body is smooth and mild accented with moderate carbonation. Finishes sweet and juicy and fades into a tart end. Leaves behind a thick cake of sediment.

Many many thanks to braddah DavidEddie for the opportunity to consider this one!!!

Pours a cloudy iced tea amber color with a HUGE stiff pastel yellow head that resists fading, in fact a pillow of a head remained through the last mouthful. Sheets of lacing in its wake. The smell is really nice; aggressive sweet and fruity, orange and pineapple and a strong piny resin. The mouth feel is medium bodied and adequately carbonated. It has a big tangy hop kick and a resin after taste that lingers nicely. Full flavored, the taste is all about the hops; very similar to the nose. Very hoppy yet quite balanced. At 5.5% ABV (are you kidding me!!!) this is one of the most sessionable ales out there. Bottom line...this is probably the best American IPA that i've ever sampled!!! Drinks a lot like Blind Pig, although is seems to have more substantial flavors and mouth. OUTSTANDING!! I think i'm going to move to Chitown!

First of all, kudos to the sterling Sun Singer in Champaign for stocking its shelves with several Three Floyds wares. Broodoo is the fourth of five different new offerings they have I've tried, and it's incredible. Enjoyed with a sirloin pot roast with potatoes, carrot, and mushrooms.

A thin but durable finger of off-white head tops a cider-orange body with dark yellow highlights; dense lacing on the Duvel tulip only augments the positive impression Broodoo has begun. Lush, citrusy nose with grapefruit, orange, and lemon with some caramel malt--excellent. As is the taste. The citrus dominates, but the malt is a fine accompaniment.

Where Broodoo comes together is in the mouthfeel. It's gritty and resiny as I like with brawny IPAs, but also smooth from the malt. Broodoo strikes a great balance as an IPA, a testament to its genius from Three Floyds. Highly drinkable, Broodoo is a tremendous IPA, better than I expected and one of my top ten.

Pours a nice mid-copper color with great initial head and some decent lacing. Very strong hoppy scent, extremely bitter in the nose, but with a nice malt backing to keep it from being hop water; aroma like it's been extra hopped during fermentation; mostly citrus aroma with a slight pine undertone. Nice deep malty flavor, very citrusy with some nice floral hints, and with more pine tastes as it warms up; a good deep malt to go with it, slight hints of caramal. Goes down fine, with just a bit of roughness from all the hops. Great pale ale, a bomber isn't too much for one person with this brew.

ThreeFloyds Broodoo This 7% American #IPA pours an Apricot Amber Opaque Orange color~ Aroma is a piney citrus heaven with a touch of cotton candy, soap and tropical flavors on the tip, almost as if they brewed it for aroma alone~ moderate body, great carbonation, a touch sticky and fairly creamy~ Wow, I haven't got to taste yet.... Such a JUICY citrus dank wet hop burst! Refreshing and satisfying, taste is everything in the aroma plus... Lemon, Grapefruit, Earthiness, honey, banana and a bit of caramel/toffee~ Every sip I take is like a juicy citrus bomb! What a delight~ My only knock is an unfair one, Im biased against IPA's because I feel as though they are soapy, bitter and taste like cat pee smells~ That said, this is delicious and Juicy! Pours out a filtered yellow/orange with two fingers of foamy white suds. Lacing here.
Smell is piney hoppy and fruity. Burns the nose so the yeast is here also. Wonderful smell, like a good Pliny.
Taste is bitter but with hints of grapefruit and mango. The flavors come and go here and all are wonderful.
Mouthfeel is good here also. No alcohol at all detected so far and the finish doesn't dissapoint. Oily and dry and a clean finish that makes you want another sip.
Drinkability is very high here. I love this beer, too bad it's not on the menu all year long.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a pint glass

Pours a light golden copper color with orangish highlights. A fairly aggressive pour produced a huge off white head that recedes slowly, leaving behind sheets of sticky lacing.

The aroma is huge. The big hoppy aroma is comprised mainly of grapefruit and orange zest, with hints of pineapple and some floral notes as well. If you can get past the hops you will find a nice bready malt aroma with some caramel notes as well.

The flavor follows the nose quite closely. The hops are on full display, with huge amounts of grapefruit, orange, and some mango and pineapple as well. There is just the slightest bit of bitterness in the finish. The malt profile is bready and sweet, just big enough to provide balance, but in no way big enough to detract from the show that the hops are putting on. Medium body and moderately carbonated, with a slightly dry finish. Very drinkable.

Just a terrific beer. Easily one of my favorite IPA's.

Great juicy hop taste and plenty of bitterness on the back end to reinforce it--not too sweet like a lot of midwestern DIPAs with this great of a hop profile (IMHO). Great hop showcase. Beautiful honey color. Nice juicy, grassy aroma. The best fresh hop beer I've had recently. Would buy again despite ridiculous bomber pricing.

Don't think I'd consider this an IPA, don't think Three Floyds considers this an IPA either. I've had this one a bunch of times, but I felt it was high time that I finally reviewed it. Ok, here we go.
Pours into the big ol' pint glass with a dark red body, orange is in there, but also very rusty. There is a tan, rusty head sitting atop the beer, thin bubbling. Nose is of hops. Really, that's about it. Oily, piny, fruity hops, more of a piny hop than any kind of fruity hops, but there is still a little bit of fruit in there. Mouth is of hops. Slick, piny, oily, bitter, delicious hops, I even detect a little bit of grassy floral hops invited as well. Despite the fact you can smell this beer from a good two feet off the glass, it is quite drinkable, it isn't too strong in alcohol and the hops don't sting like some hop bombs I've had. I want more, but I think I killed their supply last time I went in.

Let me start by saying that in my opinion this is about as good as an IPA can get. Pours a beautiful golden amber with small white head. Pine needles immediately explode to the forefront in the aroma followed by tremendous amounts of floral notes. The taste can be summed up by just saying Hoptastic, pine and grapefruit...juicy hops. Not quite as good in a bottle but absolutely delicious nonetheless, If I could drink this fresh year round I would be a very happy man!

Thanks to tifosichris for bringing this one back from Indy!

A: Poured a beautiful, light golden-brown color, with a pleasantly frothy, off-white head.

S: The nose is full of tropical fruits from the hops, more specifically tart apricots and peaches, with maybe some passionfruit? .. or atleast what I think passionfruit should smell like!

T: The taste follows the nose, and is super tart, I love it. Great hop flavor gives way to a nice maltyness, caramel, before finishing with a nice dry, bitter, pine hop flavor.

M: Light to medium with an average amount of hop resin left in the mouth.

D: I assume I am having this beer at least 4-6 weeks after it was bottled, and it is still freakin' delicious! What I think sets it apart from other IPA's is that the hop flavor is more tropical, and not just your typical grapefruit, orange and pine. Fantastic beer from the midwest!
