Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 03-19-2006

This beer is brewed during the hop harvest with a portion of unkilned or “wet” hops fresh off the vine. Apricot in color, Broo Doo’s nose has dominant orange, pine sap and floral notes, balanced by a glazed nut and toffee malt body. This celebration of the hop harvest has intense tropical fruit, citrus and spicy accents that showcase the complexity of the hops we all love.

look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 5

Appearance: Pours a fairly clear amber color with a sturdy head that leaves some nice lace around the pint glass

Smell: Lovely combination of pineapple and pink grapefruit

Taste: After a nod to the biscuit, we are off in the direction of hop juice, with pink grapefruit and pineapple arriving full blast; after the swallow, the profile balances out with a nice biscuity malt profile perfectly offseting the bitter flavors

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Drinkability: Unsurpassable for the style; just hits all the buttons for a top class IPA

Thanks, rhinos00, for the opportunity

Pours a cloudy dark golden orange color with golden burnt orange hues when held to a light source and a two finger frothy, pillowy off-white yellowish head that slowly fades into a lasting cap that coats the glass with chunks of soapy lacing.

Floral earthy hop aroma with a very strong citrus presence as well as some earthy pine notes and a caramel malt backbone with some biscuit/graham cracker notes. Dank resinous hop oils are prominent with citrus lemon and orange peel and a large pine character. The smell of this beer makes me salivate. One of the better smelling harvest ales I've encountered.

Floral earthy hops up front with a strong citrus presence. hints of grapefruit as well as orange and lemon peel. This beer is incredibly fresh and the dank oily hops provide the perfect dry yet sweet mouthfeel with a nice balance of floral notes and earthy dry pine. The mouthfeel is on the lighter end of medium body but has a slight creaminess that increases the drinkability dramatically. Subtle caramel malt backbone with hints of biscuit and graham cracker provide a nice balance but do not interfere with the hoppy goodness in the least bit. Very slight alcohol warmth is the finish but other wise the ABV is very well masked. As mentioned above this beer should be consumed fresh when it's bursting with amazing sweet, dry bitter hoppy flavor. Dangerously drinkable and probably the best harvest ale I've ever had. Highly recommended.

FFF Wet Hopped Brew? Sign me up.

Poured into a tulip and was met by a orange/golden shine like the inside of Marcellus Wallace's briefcase. Bubbly head stuck around for a minute. Smells like citrus, hops, hops, hops, light earthy scent, almost floral even. Taste is spectacular. Citrus & tropical fruits, pine, sweet, spiced, hops, but doesn't hit you like you think 80 IBU would.

Pours an orangy amber color. Thick, fluffy white head.

Bursting with resiny hop aroma with earthy spruce and grapefruit. The aroma is fresh and full. Fantastic.

Malty toffee flavor is quickly interrupted with powerful grassy spruce and grapefruit. It tastes like I imagine a huge hop flower would taste.

Mouthfeel is oily and thick - in a very good way.

The fresh hops really accentuate the wonderfully full and fresh hoppy taste. Enough malt for a sufficiently balanced hop explosion.

Many thanks to GrittyMug345 for hooking me up with a bottle of this in the BA Secret Santa BIF.

A - Pours a big creamy off-white head that's got great retention and leaves plenty of lacing. The beer is a medium golden-orange with lots of visible carbonation.

S - Citrus, bubble gum, and cotton candy. This is one of the most unique aromas I've gotten from a harvest ale.

M - Medium in body with active carbonation that fits it well.

T - The malts certainly take a back seat in this beer. Some bitterness up front followed by light citrus, cotton candy and bubble gum, just like the nose. A grapefruit character rounds off the flavors along with some nice bitter notes.

Unique hop flavors and aromas make this a very delicious and interesting harvest ale. Don't let the cute label fool you, this is an excellent, bold beer!

what a great brew. special thanks to the guy who sent me this one... some great brews all around the country. too bad we have to dupe the shipping industry to get 'em there...

drank and reviewed on 10/24/09 but it was deleted for whatever reason

pours clear amber orange with a 1+ finger head that left some lacing

smell is powerful citrus tropical fruit hops

taste - wow - i think this beer gives sculpin/hopstoopid a run for their money - big on the tropical fruits with a good malt backbone - has a nice bitter aftertaste

mouthfeel is great - has a little bite and life to it yet not harsh

drinkability - if this beer is truely 5.5%abv - this has the best drinkability of any beer i have ever had

A: Poured from a 22oz bomber. Light orange color with ample 1 to 1.5 finger head

S: copious amounts of apple-like hop aroma.

T: medium sweetness with hops all across the tastebuds that taste pretty consistent through the swallow.

M: medium bodied with an oily resinous mouthfeel. Plenty of carbonation.

O: excellent harvest ale. One of the best harvest ales on the market IMO. Will def. seek this out again the next time I'm in Indiana (probably never).

22 oz bottle into a FFF .5L glass. Thanks HopsMatt!

A - Pours a hazy dark amber/orange body. Two finger off white head forms and settles into a thick cap and edging. Fantastic lacing and retention. Simply a gorgeous beer.

S - Cotton candy sweet hops lead into some grass, grapefruit and herbal bitterness. Plenty of caramel malt. Its so beyond tropical that it comes off as candy like. Such an intoxicating aroma.

T - Sweet mango candies, juicy grapefruit, caramel mats, and pine. A light bitterness cuts through all the sweetness. Insanely delicious.

M - Medium bodied and creamy, spot on carbonation. Alcohol is not noticeable. Super drinkable.

O - I think I just found my new favorite we hop ale. I wasn't expecting much considering its age, but its drinking phenomenally. Just a candy sweet cotton candy/grapefruit bomb.

wow, was i excited to see a new 3Fs fresh hop ipa at the store, and it lived up to my expectations. pours an almost clear amber with a nice creamy white head and no visible sediment. aroma was very flowery and fresh with some notes of tropical fruit, honeyed malt and citrus. fucking phenomenal bouqet on this. taste was well-balanced between the moderately sweet malts and medium bitterness, with the aromas carrying through in the mouth along with some caramel. juicy hops. very smooth, well-integrated bitterness with a medium-long finish. a bit of astringency is the only negative quality perceived. mouthfeel was light to medium and nice and frothy. great drinkability at this low abv and high complexity, it's too bad this is not sold in sixers. definitely one of the best wet/fresh hop beers i've had.

Pours clear and bright amber in color. Good, steady carbonation in big bubbles and a nice creamy white head atop that settles to a ring. Smell is quite lovely. Very fresh, juicy, citrusy hops blanketed by a malt sweetness. Quite inviting. Taste is also great. Hops are very present but very well balanced by a caramel malt flavor. Very juicy again. A nice biscuity flavor lingers with some bitterness in the finish. It's crisp and refreshing but seems more full thanks to the wet hops. Has a creamy texture that is just great. Thirst quenching beer. That's what this is. Session material in my book. Give me more!

A- Pours a golden orange color with a nice white head that goes away fairly quickly.

S- Amazing hop aroma! It's got all bases covered. Oily, resinous pine, citrus, tropical fruit. Very very nice.

T- Caramel malts present itself as a solid base. There's also a touch of biscuity pale malts. Hops come across the palate much more grassy than the aroma. The grassiness is accompanied by a sturdy bitterness. The sweet fruitiness is still there but not near as prevelant as in the nose. Subtle pine on the swallow.

M- Medium in body and the perfect amount of carbonation. Slightly oily and covers the tongue well.

D- All day for this one. A solid brew with great taste.

This year I have been really liking the harvest ales. The Founders one just blew me away so I decided to give this one a try, even though it is probably going to be a shadow of what it once was, I couldn't pass it up. Poured from the bomber into my GI pint glass.

Pour reveals a copper orange colored murky body with a two finger stone white head. Less than aggressive lacing as the beer is drank but still remains apparent.

Smells excellent! I am surprised since this brew is atleast a couple months old and was sitting on the shelves warm. Lots of light grapefruity citrus like hops in the nose of it that have a bit of sweetness to them.

Taste is pretty good. Everything that is in the smell is there with a little bit of caramel malts. Glad this one had some shelf life to it!

Mouthfeel is almost spot on for what the style should be like. Medium bodied with moderately light carbonation. Drinkability is definitely this beers strong suit since it has a lot of flavor and a low ABV. I could pound this all night.

Another excellent beer form Three Floyds. Never knew why I second guessed getting this, it's excellent even when not so fresh!

Bright orange to amber body with only the smallest amount of snow white head.

Hints of strawberry and apricots lace an exceptionally fresh, citrus hop nose. Like ruby red grapefruit with generous portions of malt thrown in. Soft brown sugar clings to a rich caramel scent. Beautiful.

So much more subtle than the average 3F's hop-themed brews. The wet hops are delicate and floral with only the softest grapefruit pith. The hops are absorbed perfectly into a fabulously balanced malt sweetness. Hint of candied fruit push into yet another burst of rich malt on the finish. Complex, refreshing and a joy to drink.

Medium bodied with a good deal of mouthfilling bubbles but with a touch of wateriness toward the middle. The high alpha acid really ties up the loose ends, however. Overall, totally drinkable and a prime example of the Floyds' brewing prowess in all its glory.

Hard to fault this incredible beer. I think there must be some wheat mash in this, because the malt is crisp but with some zing. The hop profile is excellent, plenty of fruity citrus up front and a sharp malt backbone. Mouthfeel is perfect. Recommended.

22oz bottle picked up at the brewery for $7. Pours into my glass a clear copper orange hue with a half inch of bubbly, sticky white head on top of the brew. Harvest colors for a harvest ale! Aromas blast out of the glass with huge tropical, citric dank hop resins. It literally smells like rubbing a hop cone between your fingers. Wow, it's hard to stop smelling this one. Some slightly sweet caramel in the background, but this is all about the hops.

First sip brings a caramel, lightly toasted grain malt quickly run over by a rush of hops. Citrus and tropical fruit flavors along with green oily hop resins. There's a big bitterness but it never becomes too much. Sorta spicy. A hop lover's dream, this is one tasty brew.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, smooth and creamy. Perfect carbonation, this brew is incredibly easy to drink and a bomber goes down without the blink of an eye. Another triumph in hoppy goodness from Three Floyds, this time in a lower abv beer. Pick this one up at all costs and drink it fresh. My favorite wet hopped harvest ale I've sampled this year. I need more.

Darker yellow with an off-white head. Huge aromas of pineapple, pine, mango, and other citrus. Just beautiful. In the taste I got pineapple, grapefruit, lemon, and peach; so much citrus and excellently balanced. Medium carbonation and a little less than medium bodied. Best wet hop beer I've had. Another great FFF's beer!

3 Floyds Harvest Ale

Poured from the 22oz bottle into a Belgian goblet. Relatively fresh, was bought in March this year.

Appearance- Beer pours cloudy and amber golden with a finger of creamy white head, and ample lacing on the sides of the glass. Beer appears to be a bit red when held to the light, the cloudiness is something of a surprise as there is likely no wheat to be found. It may be unfiltered I guess.

Smell- Oh Bobby. This sweet hop nectar comes leaping from the glass straight into my nose. Grapefruit and pear upfront. So rich, the comments on the bottle call it the finest American malts which I pawned off as a catch phrase, but it actually smells like they are using fine quality malt here, maybe not 2 row, maybe maris otter for this one. The grapefruit here smells fresh and I think this beer would be fine for breakfast.

Taste- Now here is our cream filled crumpet. The citrus is upfront quickly followed by a pine and grapefruit chaser with a wonderful smoothness that coats the tongue and mouth instantly. Malt is very even and balanced, slightly buttery. The finish is smooth and slightly sweet with an excellent hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel- Spicy, creamy, medium high in carbonation (it tried to gush but we were quick on the pour), medium full bodied, very tasty.

Drinkability- Very smooth and drinkable, the hop bitterness is amazingly balanced and 3 floyds is living up to their great expectations that everyone knows that they deliver with.

Broo Doo is all about the dank hops. A punch of spicy, herbal, oily hops from the nose to the finish. One of the most pungent IPAs I've ever tasted. If you love the upfront, earthy qualities of wet hop ales, then this is your beer. I really enjoyed it for what it is: an unadulterated expression of raw hop goodness.

Poured into a snifter the golden orange color, 2 inches of white head, and cloudy body entices. A very light pale ale? Oh what the heck lets just call it a harvest ale and forget trying to pick a style. This is still on the light side of colors, thinner on the head than some with a good density.

The smell is of citrus hops, fresh and citrus hints of lemon and grape fruit. A touch of caramel malt is subtle and well in the back ground, a clear sign this isn’t imperial.

The hops here don’t take on just the citrus but they take on a touch of funk and a good twang. I’d like to know what hops are used here. They remind me in part of the founders harvest, but these are at best just a blend with a few similarities. This actually as a flavor that as someone pointed out is a lot like “cat piss” though this was followed by “give me the cat piss beer” so don’t think of this has a bad thing. The malt here balances things well for hop powered beer without the malt pushing things to the sweeter levels.

There is so much hop favor here backed by just the right amount of malt to leave things wonderfully hoppy without getting too bitter to make it off putting. The body and the abv leave thins wonderful!

10 bucks a bottle? God I hate that recommend a beer this over priced, but it is a MUST try for anyone who has an interest in hops. It is simply amazing beer as all the three floyds hoppy offerings.

Thanks to cfrances33 for this one!

Beautiful beer... warm golden body topped with a milky two fingers of dense head, perfect lacing, loads of pinpoint beading.

Massive hop profile - sappy pine notes, sweet mellow citrus qualities, thick mango character, not noticeably bitter on the nose, very inviting.

Sweet orange flesh hops up front, some pine resin beneath that, any contributing malt qualities are overshadowed by a wide range of well balanced hop flavors, another great example of how much hops can contribute without overwhelming the palate.

Great stuff.

Bought at three cellars in south milwaukee.

Pours a DEEP orange/yellow color. So deep that it really doesn't change through the light. The opposite of clear, whatever that is... perfectly cloudy? AMAZING colour! What is the score above perfect? Looks like fresh hop syrup... incredible.

Smells of fresh hops, mango, grapefruit. This is the smell of the model ipa.

Taste is incredible clean. Amazing IPA. All the juicy hop greatness you want, with none of the off flavors put off by various other IPAs. Great stuff. Could drink multiple bottle of this, even considering it comes in bombers.
