Bottle from totoropanda. Cheers!
From a 750 into a snifter
Bottle 376 / 1676
APPEARANCE: Pours a 2+ finger, looser, foamy, crackly and slightly fizzy, off-white head with half decent retention. Hazy burnt umber with medium carbonation evident. Head fades to a foamy wisp. Splotchy wisp and ring remain but leave no real lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Lots of oak, whisky and coconut on the nose. Toffee and caramel for sure, with vanilla to accompany the coconut and sweet barrel aromas. A hint of piney hops as well, but faint. Pretty nice stuff overall.
TASTE: Oak, whisky, vanilla and coconut up front. Barrel flavors mostly, as well as a bit of booze, red berries and alcohol at the swallow. A bold but shorter lived aftertaste of oak, whisky and barrel flavors, coconut, toffee sweetness, as well as some piney hop bitterness. Enough barrel with the sweet and hoppy barleywine coming through as well. Pretty good really.
PALATE: Thinner body and a bit airy and prickly on the palate. Goes down a touch prickly and finishes sticky on the palate. A scratch and burn after the swallow and lots of heat lingers on the palate. Suffers from a thinner and abrasive palate, like many of the style do.
OVERALL: This is pretty good. Quite oak heavy, but that's not a bad thing. The feel is a bit under par, as are many in the style, but the flavor is well balanced and barrel aging well executed. This is actually more barleywine than their regular Behemoth is. Quality and worth checking out if you get the chance. Cheers totoropanda!
