On tap at Local Option on 12/14/12, served in a snifter.
Pour: Pitch black, with some tan head that quickly dissipates to a collar. No lacing.
Smell: Big bourbon bite up front, followed by some dark chocolate, and more booze. Roasted malts on the finish.
Taste: Follows the nose with boozy bourbon up front, some dark chocolate, and a light marshmallow. Lots of roasted malts. Finish is boozy bourbon and caramel.
Mouthfeel: Lighter, with nice carb. Booziness is warming and hot. I can imagine this was very hot when it was first released.
Overall: A nice, lighter bourbon barrel stout. A little hot still, and I'm not sure the body can suppor the barrel aging.

On-tap at 3 Floyds for Dark Lord Day 2012. Served in one their stubby taster-size glasses.
A - A tan foam settles to some persistent wisps, a thick collar, and minimal lacing. The body is near-black.
S - Aroma is quite enticing, with a great mix of earthy bourbon, vanilla, toasted grains, coconut, milk chocolate, and the faintest residual floral hop character I get from the base beer.
T - The taste starts out quite similar, but yields to a moderately sharp whiskey bite that gets fatiguing by the end of the glass. More roast and dark chocolate, and less of the wonderful vanilla flavor in the aroma. Some cherry and dark fruits round things out.
M - The base beer isn't the biggest to begin with, so this ends up on the lighter side of medium. Quite tannic, and with surprisingly zesty carbonation presence. A hint of warming, but nothing excessive.
D - The smell is wonderful, but unfortunately the taste is merely enjoyable. I remember liking this a tad more a few months back when a growler was shared late one night at the Hopleaf. Still, it's another fine barrel-aged offering from 3 Floyds that I'd gladly have again.
