Inky black with a ring of mahogany at it's edges. There was a full two fingers of mocha tinged foam that stuck well to the sides.
Amazing bourbony nose of charred oak, vanilla, toasted coconut, brown sugar sweetness. Very aromatic and well blended, no trace of alcohol, though it shows it's strength. Just fantastic... I was inhaling this in between sips. Later the wood dominated, with the dry chocolate of the stout starting to peek through.
Rich flavor of bakers chocolate, woody tobacco, vanilla, moderate char, and dry oak in the aftertaste. The bourbon element was just right and well integrated. Dry in the finish with a mild fudgy sweetness. No cherry/tartness as mentioned in reviews of prior batches. Full bodied with low carbonation, though not much bigger than non-BA Black Sun. Easy enough to drink, the abv wasn't noticeable in the taste, but it was certainly felt. FFF's answer to BCS. Nice stuff!

The tartness combined with the alcohol flavors are reminiscient of red wine. That was my first thought in taking a sip--almost a wine in beer form.
$9 dollars for a very small glass at the brewpub. Expensive, obviously. Would have had something cheaper if they had posted the price, which they did not. In fact, none of the beer menues were updated to include this beer. A little shady.
Good beer, though. Probably the best bourbon-barrel beer I've had, not so dominated by bourbon flavors as most of them seem to be. I still want to know that I'm drinking beer, and the bourbon quality here is just right. Not sorry I had the beer, though I wouldn't have spent 9 bucks for a tiny glass of it had I known the price. I would have gotten two pints of the moloko milk stout for the same price, as my friend did.

On tap at FFFs BrewPub. Dark/Muddy in appearance. Right off the bat, you can smell the bourbon. I like the regular Black Sun, but this is such a unique brew, I can't help but prefer it over the regular version. Has a great mix of sweetness and creamy/smooth taste...a must try if you're lucky enough to find it on tap.

Had a snifter of this on tap at Three Floyds brew pub yesterday. Very dark/oily brown with a thin dark head that dissipated quickly.
Taste was very complex and strong, intense bourbon with a minor alcohol burn. There is a slight smoke and cherry finish, but I mostly experienced bourbon.
Overall, a nice beer, drank only one and I thought that was enough. Definitely a sipper.

On tap at Three Floyds and served in a snifter. This beer poured a slick, oily dark brown with a bubbly head of dark tan foam that lasted a little white. Just a touch of slippery lacing was left behind. The aroma of the beer was made up of sweet bourbon notes along with a nice roasted malt backbone. The flavor included bourbon, wood, coffee, and burnt malts. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied with very mild carbonation. A nicely done barrel-aged beer. The bourbon blends in nicely with the original beer.

I didn't try this earlier in the day because, well, I knew I wouldn't be able to taste it after drinking the barrel aged Dark Lord. Went back to the hotel, passed out, woke up and then came back. They still had the Black Sun on tap, so I had to try it with a nice, fresh pallet.
Pours medium opaque in a glass snifter. Actually seems more translucent than regular Black Sun. Still, nice head, nice color.
The giant west coast hop presence of Black Sun is gone, replaced with the giant, rough malt of a very strong porter. The cherry twang is clear, too, bringing back fond memories of Perkuno's Hammer.
Tastes much more bourbony than it smells. Giant, single malt scotch smokiness, moving into rough weedy and grainy porter malts--like just sticking a handful of grain into your mouth--and then it slides into the tart sour cherries and a roughly smooth finish, like a good oatmeal stout.
It's like you're drinking three beers at once and all of them are good.

A- This beer has a black opaque body with a little ring of tan head. No sign of carbonation in this body.
S- The dry wood aroma has no notes of smoke but there is a smooth non smoky whisky note. The soft hint of cherries isn't really tart or sweet but pretty neutral. There are notes of dark roasted malt that are dry with a finish of green apple skins.
T- The taste of big dry white wine and soft whisky blends with the soft dark roasted malt that has a chalky taste to it. This is followed by a bright tartness from cherries but the cherry flavor is much more subtle than the tartness. The finish is pretty clean with a dry alcohol taste.
M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with a slight slippery finish.
D- This beer has a smooth but big wood note and the brightness from the cherries really overpower the dry stout. Even though the wood is big it is not as overpowering as many barrel aged beers. Good choice of barrel and fruit but more malt flavors coming through would really be nice.

Nearly black midnight. With a creamy whisped tan head that leaves a very fine lace. Served way too cold will have too wait about 30 minutes to try this one.
The tart cherry that is added to this BA version really show through. Sour cherry, with a rich roasted chocolate malt. Very reminiscent aromas of an Ester Price chocolate covered cherry. Behind all that the bourbon shows through especially as it warms. Hints of vanilla, and mollases, with hints of hops hidden beneath everything.
I like this. The cherries really add a tart, sweetness that cuts the big bold bourbon finish. Slightly too much bourbon actually. Adds a big alcoholic taste that doesn't help the beer. I think a new oak barrel could have done this beer better. The more this one warms and the more I try it the more "bourbon" I taste. It tends too drown out the other flavors. If not for the addition of the cherries it would be like drinking a dumbed down version of Woodford. There are some hints of the roasty chocolate malt, with tastes of vanilla ever so slightly. Update after warming even more the beer relaxes a little and smoothes out. Still quite bourbony but much better. Highly recommended.
Mouthfeel is somewhat thin for a stout and for a beer this big. Definitely too much time in the bourbon barrel, less time or a new oak barrel and this would have been that much better, however still worthy of a try and pretty solid.

Served in a snifter at Three Floyds 1/13/07. "2006 Black Sun Stout aged 1 year with tart cherries ia a Woodford Reserve oak barrel"
A: Very black with ruby accents at the edges of the glass. Tiny brown head.
S: Interesting mix of cherries and bourbon. A hint of sweet vanilla.
T: Flavors of caramel, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, and oak tied together with earthy tart cherries.
M: Sharp and tangy for such a still beer. Very prickly on the tongue. Thin and acidic sort of like sparkling tart cherry juice. Could stand to be thickened up a bit.
D: One of the nice things about this beer is that you're not bowled over by a heavy bourbon presence. It's there, but it's balanced by the tart cherries. A pleasant tartness, coupled with a restrained sweetness, and a low alcohol presence considering the 7.2% abv make this one quite drinkable.
