I had this beer on tap at Which Brew back in January of this year and was very impressed by the wonderful hop aroma in the nose. I knew that I wanted to drink this beer again and in quantity so I made the drive to Shangy's yesterday.

I found the pyramid of neatly stacked white boxes with purplish text but was a bit sceptical. No bottled on date. Shit! Now what? Shangy's is the THE place for beer in the area but then again who knows how long they've had this stuff. One thing making the decision even harder was the pyramid of Two Hearted Ale sitting immediatley next to the Alpha King WITH a bottled on date of 3/28/05. I glanced at my watch, twirled my cell phone in my hands, then grabbed a case of the Alpha King.

Very cool bottles with a vibrantly colored label and the same green and purple swirled cap as their Jack the Bruce Scottish Ale. I plan to re-use these bottles for home brew and I can tell these labels are going to be a pain in the ass to remove. Anyway, who cares about that right now, let's drink.

Popped the top, poured the beer, closed my eyes, and inhaled. Ahhh, I'm back at Which Brew eating dinner with my wife. Memories.

The beer is a clear amber liquid with a nice rocky white head. Good, sticky lacing on my Victory Hop Devil pint glass. It's ok, Victory, you're still my #1 girl.

HUGE flowery hops in the nose, same as what I remembered as that on tap.

Wonderfully bitter with just enough maltiness to balance. A nice clean finish, BBUUUURRRRPP! YES! I taste hops in the belch. Oh, life is so good.

Go out and buy some of this now. This beer is delicious.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance - Pours with an off-white head that is about a finger thick and party soapy and creamy. It retains for a decent amount of time, and settles at the usual thin layer of lace on top of the beer. Decent lacing all the way down. The beer's color is a crystal clear orange/honey amber with just a few carbonation columns here and there.

Smell - Strong, crisp, and bitter hops right on the nose, smells like a full-blown IPA. Slight fruity sweetness and citrus rind are also present. Clean mellow malt character is in the background. The alcohol is evident, and of moderate strength. A very complex and refreshing aroma from this beer.

Taste - Small oily bitterness from the hops mixed with a rich bready malt character right away. The malt quickly dies down, and for a moment a moderate fruity sweetness comes through. Taking the place of the malt's retreat, is a very stong and dry citrusy and crisp bitter hops flavor. The finish begins to balance out again as the malts make yet another appearance. The aftertaste is commanded by dry hops at first, and as the flavors die down an oilyness comes through. A very slight earthiness is detectable. The alcohol is medium, and its warming effects can be felt through the whole taste. A very complex and eventful flavor from this beer.

Mouthfeel - A slight carbonation bite can be felt in the beginning, but this mellows to a massaging tickle that lasts for the rest of the taste. The body is fairly light and the liquid is surprisingly smooth for the style.

Drinkability - Quite a bitter pale ale, but the hops are superb in flavor. Its bitterness, I think, is the only attribute that takes from its overall drinkability.

A masterful pale ale. Seems more like an IPA to me since the hops are quite more powerful than the malt character. An excellent interpretation of the style, though. A must have pale ale, especially for hops lovers!

Poured from 12oz bottle into Tulip.

A. Poured a nice 1+ finger head. Good retention. Solid lacing. Nice copper orange color.

S. Smell is sweet delicous hops. Smells better than a lot of IPAs. Citrusy and piney hops. Some caramel malt lying beneath the hops.

T. Taste is very smooth. The citrus piney hops are balance agains a swee malt backbone. I would say this one of the best APAs out there. Nice showcase of hops balanced well with malt.

M. Medium bodied. Medium carbonation. Nice mouthfeel. Lingering bitterness.

D. Reviewing this beer after a 3 year void of Alpha King from Iowa. This bottle brought from Wisconsin. This is a damn good beer. I think this is pretty much the style guideline for an APA.
