Picked this one up at the foodery, again.

A murky dark amber color with thin head and lacing. A little darker than most of the IPAs Ive had and it really defines this rather different IPA.

The smell was sweet right a way. It definitely had the usual citrus but also a toasted or caramelnotes.

The taste was a pleasant surprise. I tasted the darkness and toastiness I had predicted and it was sweet to start and mildly bitter at the end.

I could surely drink this one again and it is defintely up there in my top IPAs. If you like IPAs try this one.

Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with a small white foamy head with minimal retention. Aroma of strong bitter hops with some floral malt. Taste is mostly overpowered by hops with some caramel malt. I’m not sure I get what is suppose to be so great about this beer, seems to me that it lack balance. Will give this another try though.

The beer poured a light Amber color and was almost clear. Bottle said bottle conditioned but similar to Dogfish IPA's I see no sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Beer poured with a good head and had a long lasting lace on the side of the glass.

Smell has a ton of hop arroma...very fruity

This beer tastes better than it smells and it smells really good. Hop flavor throughout but not overwhelming. Each sip and I wanted to drink more. One of the few times I don't mind living in PA because I had to purchase an entire case of this and I'm thrilled I did.

Picked up a single at Riley's here in Madison.

Pours a dark clear amber with a short finger of white head with decent retention. Nose is big and hoppy, the bitter floral variety, some citrus, and sweet malts. Taste starts off with a sharp bitter hop bite and transitions nicely into tropical fruits and caramel malts Alcohol is mildly present. Mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing, though a little on the thin side. This is a tasty APA. Didn't wow me, but a solid bitter hopped pale ale.

Poured into a pint glass and had a nice copper-reddish color. Was amazed at the head retention. Actually thought I saw it getting thicker in the glass. Superb appearance. Had a flowery, grassy smell too it, very earthy. As expected, the hops dominate the taste, but it is very well balanced. Thgouth the flavor changed somewhat as the beer breathed in the glass. A very refreshing beer.

12 oz. bottle

Pours a medium orange-amber with an off-white head that fades quickly. Decent lacing on the glass.

Smells very hoppy, a sweet piney aroma that makes me thirsty.

Tastes fantastically balanced, lots of hops and some nice caramel malty undertones. Quite delicious.

Nice rich body, carbonated about perfectly.

I could easily knock back a few in a row. In fact, I have....

12 ounce bottle poured into a nonic pint glass.

A - Pours a nice amber color, almost a dark shade of orange with a one and a half finger head that's slightly off white. A nice looking pale ale.

S - A gorgeous piny hops smell with a little hint of citrus in there.

T - Big hop rush on the initial sip, very nice. Hops mellow slightly and allow for a little malty flavor, then the hops kick back up on the finish/aftertaste. Definitely a good one.

M - A well carbonated beer that feels good on the tongue. Gives you a "punch" from beginning to beyond the end due to all the hoppiness.

D - Goes down nice and easy. Could easily knock this sixer down. Probably a bad idea though since I'm going out later.

Juniper! The second I open this bottle my hot and humid kitchen becomes an alpine mountain side. I love it!

This could be dangerous, however, because sometimes beers with a juniper nose of this magnitude have an overly juniper or gin like taste. This is not something that I tend to enjoy since I am not, never have been, and god willing never will be a gin drinker. This doesn’t necessarily kill a beer for me but it does reduce its drinkability.

Thankfully, the Alpha King delivers a taste of intense hops and chilled citrus instead of juniper berries. I’m not sure how the good folks at Three-Floyds struck this balance, offering an uber bold scent while maintaining a smooth cool taste, but they did.

Also to its benefit, this beer is hyper drinkable. Despite its relative strength, I could polish off a sixer in a sitting and enjoy it.

This just might be the best APA I’ve ever had. If it’s not, it’s darn close.

A - Poured a slightly thick, deep amber, almost red with a narrow head that dissapeared.

S - A very deep aroma of hops, pine and a little citrus, very enticing.

T - Wow, thats hoppy. Good hops with a bit of a pine cone. A refreshing APA.

M - Very thin and smooth, I let it slip around the tongue for a second before letting it go down.

D - Great drinkability, this is a great beer to have a few while fishing. Don't have too many though, the 7.3% may sneak up on you.

I like this beer, I bought a sixer of it, and glad I did. This beer though did remind me alot of Bell's Two Hearted with a little more body, to any fans of that I'd reccomend them Alpha King.

Grapefruit and a little pine dominates the nose and initializes the flavors. This complements heavy malt sweetness blending with the hops not perfectly, but well enough to highlight attributes of both. It has a nice body and crisp finish brought-on by hop bitterness and a smattering of alcoholic bite.

This beer doesn't hit perfection in any category, yet it's so close. Its flaws are almost negligible and has been one of my favorite beers for years.

This beer is a good reason for me to move back towards the Great Lakes!

Beyond gold but not really brown, a floral and sweet aroma beckons. Of course, it is the snap, crackle, pop of hops that pulls me in. However, there is enough malt to make it work, to make me drink AK all night.

For me, this beverage represents a balanced diet.

Appearance - Pours an orange-light brown color with off-white head and plenty of lacing. Good carbonation.
Smell - A burst of citrus and spices. Very enticing.
Taste - Blast of grapefruit with a citrus finish. Very dry with moderate-to-high bitterness.
Mouthfeel - Refreshing and powerful. Lingering sensation of bitter fruit.
Drinkability - Easy to drink. I had several in one sitting and enjoyed the very last sip. This beer can be overpowering with mild dishes. Should go well with spicy dishes.

I enjoyed three of these with no problem during Notre Dame's big win over the Pitt Panthers last night so I may be bit biased. Great looking copper colored Pale Ale with average head and lots of carbonation. Smells of floral hops and citrus, with a hint of alcohol. Superb style that fizzes in the mouth and is very easy to consume. One of the top Pale Ales I've had.

Hop heaven!! I once described this as grapefruit and beer mixed together to a friend, and he was startled to agree. The citrus hop note is unmistakable. The perfect malt note to balance the citrus. If you can find this fresh, it's spectacular. I can't seem to find a fresh 6 pack anywhere. Grapefruit and pine dominate. Mouthfeel is wonderful; smooth and creamy. Three Floyds can't make a bad beer. Buy anything they make, you can't go wrong.

Poured an orange color with a small, off white head, that left nice lacing on the glass. Citrusy hop aroma, as well as a bitter hop flavor, with some grape taste as well. Very nice malt backbone as well. This can be drank more frequently than Dreadnaught.

Bought a case from the brewery on July 3.
Amber with and off white head. Fair retention. Minimal haze.
I get some bold citrus (orange or tangerine) hops and rich breadyness for malt in the nose.
Very full flavor. Again citrus hops and robust breadiness from the malt. Maybe some caramel. Moderate body. Not a lot of ligering flavor.
SNPA is considered to be the classic example of this style. For my money, I'll take Alpha King any time.
Re-review: Since this beer is listed as a APA, I say it is the best possible APA. I rated it before assuming it was an IPA

Clear dark bronzy amber with a loose 1/2" off white head.

Mmmm...the nose...fresh cone of the hop in a sweet, syrupy malt glaze. Fruity notes galore, compliments of the generous amount of hops. Brown sugar in there as well.3

Bountiful flavors of fresh hops all right - very vinous. An interesting tea flavor sits boldly behind the hops. Not too much malt presence (unlike the nose). Slightly sweetened iced tea flavor with a nice offsetting bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a slightly bitter, dry finish.

Drinkability is good. Very versatile and flavorful.

A hearty pale ale no doubt. I've had plenty of IPAs that can't hold their weight against this surly boy. Balsy & bold. What else would you expect from 3Fs?

The alpha king has a clear reddish yellow color with a quickly fading head. Decent smell of grapefruit, citrusy hops. Medium bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. A good taste is of slightly bittersweet caramel malts followed by a floral hop taste to finish.
Not really what i was expecting here. Seems to be "only" a better than average pale ale.
A tasty brew nevertheless.

Bottle conditioned APA. Pours hazy orange color - creamy medium dense head recedes into thin bubbly white sheet. Smell is fresh: citrus and fruity hops, light sweet malts. Taste is fantastic: big hops yet very well balanced with sweet malts...nice and smooth. Crisp and rich with a dry hop finish. This is a great IPA (it IS an IPA isn't it?), it should definately please the hop-heads. Very tasty indeed...too bad its so hard to find in the NE (available in RI though). Excellent.

poured a deep copper color with respectable head. Smell is very hoppy, also noted is citrus with lemon domibating. Taste is hoppy, hoppy, hoppy. There is also found some sweet malty notes that mox well with the hops. Finish is dry and bitter, but moderated some by the malt. An excellent all around beer.

I got this as a gift from my dad, the hop head. I drank it in a pilsner glass. No friggin' date on the case, bottle, or label. Get the fuck with it, guys!

Pours a slightly hazy amber/orange, with a 1" head of sticky, off-white foam. Head drops to a nice coating and a ring. Great lacing throughout the drink. Carbonation bubbles lazily rise to the surface.

Strong, citrus-y grapefruit aroma with lemon peels and orange. Caramel candy malts there in the background. Dried apricots and pear esters, as well. Smells great!

The first flavor is a big caramely malt base, quickly blitzed away by pretty strong hop bittering. Grapefruit and lemon taste from hops, very citrus-y. Amarillo hops? As it warms, you can pick up alcohol. Tastes great! Aftertaste is sweet and citrus-y and bitter and very long. Awesome.

Mouthfeel is smooth, with a nice bite from carbonation. Sweet, but certainly not too sweet. Good grab at the back of the throat from hop bittering. Delicious burps!

A truly wonderful, if slightly overdone, version of the style. A delicious beer worthy of an afternoon of drinking. You'd be trashed if you did, though!

Pours nice hazy golden orange color, with decent creamy head. The smell is amazing. Refeshing fresh squeezed grapefruit and floral. Dank and fresh herbal aroma. Taste is an explosion of hoppy goodness. Finish is nice and bitter before it smooths out. Great mouthfeel. Mouthwateringly drinkable.

This is definitely more of an IPA than a PA. Great pleasant and satisfying hops. I could drink this constantly.

Appearance: Lightly hazy reddish copper with a small, frothy/milky, off-white head with good retention and lots of sticky lacing.

Smell: Heavenly citrus and floral hops over a moderate, cookie-like malt sweetness. Grapefruit, toffee, grass, some light doughy yeast, and a little bit of roses. Nicely balanced.

Taste: This isn’t an IPA? Big, dominant hops sting your taste buds right off the bat, filling your mouth with bitter flavors of fruit and herbs. Then the bitterness back off a bit to let the wonderful, solid, lightly sweet malt backbone show through. A little yeast once it warms up a bit. But the hops don’t back off for very long and come rushing back as it head toward the finish. More citrus and a very light (is that diacetyl?) sweetness. The finish is VERY long in duration as the bitterness just refuses to let go. So tasty.

Mouthfeel: Full body, dry texture, and soft carbonation.

Drinkability: I had heard good things about this beer, and being a hophead I knew I would like this. But you fellow BA’s know your stuff. This was a truly impressive brew. Very easy drinking, despite the higher alcohol (which was hidden well). I’m glad I followed the advice of this community and sought it out (thanks hero27 for a great trade), I’d definitely recommend this to a hop-hunter. The first Three Floyds offering I have tried, but I hope to remedy that soon.

an outstanding brew from Three Floyds.
Pours a vibrant burnt copper orange with a nice 2 finger head thats creamy and sticks around leaving nice lacing
aroma of pine and grass with big aromas of citrus. Grapefruit and orange with very faint hints of caramel like malt in the backdrop
taste is a huge citrus hit with big flavors of grapefruit and orange with those caramel malts making an appearance in the middle. It has a great creamy mouthfeel to it yet finishes crisp and slightly dry leaving a slight hop bitterness but not overwhelming at all. This brew is masterfully blended with great flavors.

presentation: 12oz. bottle with the typical three floyds name and beer type encircling an image of a green guy with an "A" crown, hops hair and is sprinkling hops dust over a glass of beer. (that's what it looks like to me) a small map to the brewery is printed on the label. the explanation of this three floyds' style is also printed. no sight of an abv or freshness date.

appearance: pours an ever-so-lightly hazy cherry wood red-brown with bright red-orange highlights into a pint glass. good 1" white bread colored head. excellent sticky lace. bubbles rise emphatically through this gem beauty.

smell: my first reaction is this smells like an ipa. very piney and grassy. also very lemony citrusy. some sweet caramel and fruits as well. maybe bananas.

taste: first sip is lightly malty with a ton of citrus grapefruit hop flavor. nice bitterness; not quite ipa bitter, but i love it. some caramelly bread flavors as the brew warms. always finishes a little bitter and dry with a wonderful lasting hop spicy aftertaste.

mouthfeel: crisp but medium body and smooth mouthfeel. good carbonation and pretty good swallow.

drinkability: excellent drinkability. alcohol creeps in at the end, but the aroma, taste and especially aftertaste keep you drinking 'til the end.

overall: this is another one of those beers where even though it gets good ratings, i still believe it deserves even higher. near perfect for this style. a little hoppy for an apa, so i couldn't give a five there, but that's what i love so screw the ratings! get yourself a lot of these if you're able!
