Had at pizzeria paradiso in geargetown

A) Toasted honey generous light head.

S) Light pine scent with a hint of wildflower.

T) Deliciously hoppy with pine and sweetness.

M) Light and refreshing.

D) I could drink this until the floor came up and smacked me in the face.

This is an exceptional IPA and well deserves its reputation. My only complaint is that it is not readily available.

A- Pours out a deep bronze color with two fingers of head that leaves gorgeous lacing.

S- Smells of caramel, slightly dried and crushed pine needles. The aroma could use some more strength to it.

T- There's hints of orange liquor surrounded by pretty intense malt flavors. I had the King on draft about a year ago and remember the hops dominating way more than now. This is good but not as good. I'd like more pine.

M- I could use more carbonation. Besides that it's good- syrupy at just the right level.

D- This is quite a beer, but I wish it was fresher.

Have had this beer twice now. Once when a friend (Bigturo) brought a bottle back with him from his vacation in Chicago (with a short trip down to Indiana)and shared it with me. The second time, is when another friend (thanks Skuter) got a bottle in a trade, and split it with me. This review is from notes compiled from both tastings.

A: Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Bruery tulip glass. The beer pours a golden orange, with a copper amber hue. A frothy off white head rose a good inch in a half, then slowly settled leaving spotty lacing.

S: I pick up scents of grass, pine, and a sweet caramel malt.

T: Flavors of pine, mild citrus fruits, earthy grains, and a light caramel bread malt provides a nice back bone. The hops circle back for a dry crisp finish.

M: Medium to high carbonation, with light to medium body, pretty smooth, with a mildly bitter dry finish.

O: Good. Always a great treat to try some Three Floyds beers, being so far from them. Hope to see their Brewery some day.

This pale ale pours a light golden amber with nice pearl head that diminishes relatively quickly with decent lace. Fairly standard, but a bit more textured than many brews of this style.

A nice bite and appetizing hoppiness greets the nostril once the head has receded. Light fruits, citrus, hops, and pine.

Flavor-wise, this ale is clean and refreshing with a nice, very pronounced hoppiness and a bit of alcohol. Some fruit in the finish, lemon and other undistinguished citrus tang and spicy pine.

Bright and refreshing, but retaining some nice body, with natural carbonation. A great pairing with fish or chicken on the grill this summer. Another success from the fine folks at Three Floyd's.

Very good APA. Pours a coppery golden color with an off-white head. Good citrusy hop aroma. Aggressively hopped. Very good citrus hop flavor that seems to overlay a solid malt backbone. Spice notes are also detectable. Maintains good drinkability.

Perhaps I did things in reverse order when I tried Dreadnaught a few months back, but it and Alpha King were meant to be 2 different beers entirely. Now the latter has its turn.

APPEARANCE: Poured a somewhat hazy reddish amber with a very underwhelming 1/4 inch head. It dropped almost immediately and is now just a thin collar with a few bubbly patches on top.

SMELL: Now there's a hop profile that I'm familiar with. A huge citrusy aroma is very upfront, not unlike many Three Floyds offerings. Sweet hop estery smells fill your nostrils no matter which way you try to smell it. An almost resiny sweetness plays alongside with a caramely malt presence barely detectable.

TASTE: Starts out quite tame and nicely balanced. The citrusy and floral hop flavors are delicious. A strange sugary sweetness is also present but not in the same high intensity as I've tasted in some other pales. The finish is where the hops start to bust through, showing their true colors (and flavors) and really give this beer its bite.

MOUTHFEEL: Disappointing. Perhaps I have a bad bottle, but the carbonation was extremely low (which could explain the lack of head). The body is nice, being slightly fuller than I anticipated.

DRINKABILITY: On one hand, this doesn't seem like such an extreme beer, and one would think that it could certainly be drank as a session beer because of a decent degree of balance it achieves. On the other hand, this is Three Floyds and nothing isn't extreme. The hops are still there in full force. So the drinkability comes out somewhere in the middle which isn't a bad score at all.

I really hope this bottle is an outlier and that a typical bottle of this isn't as flat as mine, because it brings down an otherwise tasty beer. I would seek this one out again. All beers deserve a second chance.

I have enjoyed this many times from the bottle; now, I tried it on tap at a local chain restaurant.

Poured a clear, copper color with a creamy off-white head with plenty of lacing.

Smelled strongly of piney, citrusy hops.

I was surprised that the ale on tap was actually far more restrained in the hoppy, bitterness of its bottled version. If anything, it was a slightly more balanced with the malt flavor lingering a little longer.

Creamy mouthfeel, moderate carbonation and medium bodied. It left very satisfying, rounded flavor in the mouth.

Both the bottled and tap versions are excellent with both showing slightly different characteristics.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Samuel Adams Perfect pint glass. Thanks to my buddy Todd for the Indiana > NY trade.

A: Beautiful, crystal clear, amber color. Mildly aggressive pour leads to a fluffy white two finger head that takes some time to go away and leaves a thick layer of lacing.

S: Woah - smells like an IPA. A really really nice IPA. Piney hops up front, caramel malt back end. This is a wonderfully smelling Pale Ale that really can't be understated.

T: Boom goes the hop dynamite. Hops up front, hops on the back end, hops hops hops. The malt is there to create some balance but holy wow is this the hop-heads wet dream of a Pale Ale.

M: Bitter back end, bitter aftertaste. The aftertaste doesn't linger but that's what makes this a great Pale Ale, not an IPA!!

O: Probably the best Pale Ale I've ever had. I'm a hop head and this is easily the hoppiest pale ale I've ever had. It's easy drinking, a perfect 6.5%. This beer is one I'll be getting a steady supply of as it's one of the best beers I've ever had.
