A throwback historical ale brewed when English IPA's were hopped up to last the long voyage from England to Colonial troops in India, using English malts, English hops, English yeast and aged slightly on toasted oak for a 19th century taste.

Cloudy orange Amber, fluffed white foam. Candied mango and pineapple is strong with this one. Boozy and malt-forward. Really solid (130 characters)

I've never really been a big fan of English IPAs so this is literally one of the last offerings from 3-F's that I haven't tried until now.

A - Deep orange color. Clear with huge white head and strong lacing.

S - Strong hop fragrance with a significant citrus hop aroma. There is some of the herbal and dank notes but still more citrus than an other English IPA I've had before. Not as hoppy as any of the other 3-F's beers but still a very hop forward beer. There is some fruity characters from the yeast and a malt presents.

T - Very similar to the smell but with more of the citrus hop character. The sweet malt is first on the tongue and then in the middle there is the full hop flavor with citrus, herbal, and some dank notes. I'm not picking up any floral hops which is very good to me. The fruity esters are in the background too from the yeast. The hop bitterness is there and adds to the hoppiness of the beer but is pretty mild in comparison to some of their beers. Overall hop forward but don't expect to be stunned by this one.

M - Moderate mouth-feel with moderate to high carbonation. The carbonation tries to make it a little lighter and is an easy drinker.

Overall, the best of the style that I've had but it isn't my favorite style nor do I think that this beer is the most stylistic. It seems like a jerked over version on an American IPA that is sweeter, fruitier, and mild bitterness. I liked it but for $12 a bomber I would pass this one up. Try Alpha King first and then if you can't find something else to peek your interest try this one.

Received in a trade for some Hopslam; thanks, Drew! Poured into a pint glass, this beer had a nice golden body with a thin white head. Aroma is of hops, sugar and vanilla. Full bodied creamy and syrupy mouthfeel. This beer is mostly sweet and overly oaky with an almost cloying finish that has very little hop bitterness. I appreciate the brewer's intent with the oak and low bitterness to make this taste more authentic as if the barrel had sailed for months, however it just wasn't my cup of tea. I don't think I'll be having this one again soon. (548 characters)

22 oz bottle pours into a Sam Adams tasting glass a hazed and rusty orange amber body. Small beige head has some legs and there is plenty of sticky lacing sheeting the sides of the glass.

Aroma is robust with pineapple and orange notes. Some florals tease from underneath and there is a hint of biscuity malt.

Exceptional feel! Medium body with an ideal velvety carbonation and a pleasant earthy hoppiness.

Taste opens with pineapple and blood oranges. Unbuttered toast and honey add some dimension. The hops take on an earthy bitterness midway through and some pine essence briefly appears. The citrusy sweetness recovers toward the finish but never overwhelms. Startling balance between the citrusy fruitiness and classic 3F hop bitterness. No hint of the alcohol.

Wow! Probably the best beer I've had this year. Need more. (829 characters)

22 ouncer purchased at the brewery. No freshness info/bottling date info on the bottle. Hazed medium honey amber. Long lasting off white head and oodles of lacing bits. Soft hoppy nose.Tasty EIPA of better then average quality. Tasty stuff, lacks the depth of flavors of the all stars of the style. (298 characters)

The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma is caramel malt with some flowers and perfume notes. The flavor is very heavy on the caramel malt, but I also get some orange citrus, grass and flowery hops. The bitterness is about medium. A very good aroma and flavor combination. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Another good beer from Three Floyds. (369 characters)

huge thanks to my dad for bringing this home from chicago!

22oz. bottle at fridge temp poured into a snifter. no bottled on date.

pours out a cloudy golden orange color with about 1 finger of white head, good retention and some nice lacing on the glass.

the initial aroma is of very resiny hops. also detectable is piney/ woody hops, a candied, biscuity, caramel malt, a bit of alcohol heat and just a hint of some spice, almost winter warmer like.

a nice balance. pine, grapefruit rind, resiny, woody, spicy hops balanced by a big biscuit, candied caramel malt. comes off slightly herbal/ earthy as it warms. alcohol heat definatly makes the strenth apparent. finishes with a spicy, resinous hop bitterness, again just a hint of a winter warmer like spicey oak.

a big solid, dense, sticky feel on the palate, carbonation feels just right. some really nice bitter flavors linger on the palate after each sip.

a solid IPA here, id say its more american than english, but it works for what it is, almost barleywine like. similar to other 3floyds big IPAs ive had. worth a try, but i prolly wouldnt go after it again. (1,121 characters)
